Proximal And Distal Epiphyseal Growth Of The Humerus In German Shepherd (Alsatian) Puppies, Gülsün Pazvant, Defne Bacinoğlu, Vedat Onar

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, a total of 23 humeri of German shepherd puppies of ages between 40 and 100 days were used. It was observed that the proximal and distal epiphyseal regions were not closed and even the epiphysis was partially spongious. The width of the epiphyseal plate and epiphysis were not equal and they reached the same level with age. There were variations between the epiphysis widths of the right and left humeri and the differences between these values were statistically significant. When the right and left humeri measurements were analysed for correlation with each other, a significant high positive …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The Turkish Merino is the most common mutton breed in Turkey. In this study the Turkish Merino was used as a sire line for the production of two-way and three-way crossbred slaughter lambs. Our aim was to investigate improvements in the meat production of these crossbred lambs. In this part of the study, the fattening, slaughter and carcass characteristics of two-way and three-way crossbred lambs were taken into consideration in comparison with those of Turkish Merino purebred lambs. The inspected live weights at the end of fattening were 37.6 kg, 37.8 kg and 37.4 kg for Turkish Merino x Kıvırcık, …

Immunoblot Analysis Of Campylobacters Of Chickens, Mehmet Akan, Jale Erdeğer, Zi̇ya İlhan

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to determine immunogenic structures by immunoblotting in thermophilic Campylobacter strains isolated from chickens. The bands obtained from C. jejuni strains were found to be distributed between 10.8 and 116.5 kD by SDS-PAGE analysis of whole cell proteins. The bands 78, 63, 52, 48.5, 43.5, 29.8, 25.6, 22, 18.5, 17.2 and 16.5 kD were detected as the major common bands in all C. jejuni strains. Electrophoretic analysis of C. coli strains revealed that protein band profiles ranged between 10.3 and 118 kD, and 76, 63-62, 52, 48.5, 44 and 30.5 kD bands were all major …

Some Assyriellaspecies In South East Anatolia In Turkey Differentiated By Multivariate Statistical Analysis (Gastropoda: Pulmonata, Helicidae), Hasan Akbayin, Murat Hevedanli, Ridvan Şeşen

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This study was performed on 3 species of the genus Assyriella ( A. escheriana , A. guttata and A. thospitis) collected from Diyarbakır province in Southeast Anatolia. Two derived and 6 shell variables of 50 specimens were examined for each species. Hierarchical clustering and discriminant analysis were used to evaluate the data in order to clarify and contribute to some systematic problems of these species. It was shown that Ward's method with Euclidean distance is the most appropriate hierarchical clustering method to cluster these species. A. escheriana is clearly differentiated from A. guttata and A. thospitis by both Ward's method …

A Preliminary Study On The Ladybirds (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) Of Edirne In North-Western Turkey, Selçuk Yurtsever

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Preliminary investigations were carried out to determine the ladybird species of Turkish Trakya. Population samples for the study were obtained from several sites in different habitats near Edirne province. A total of twelve different ladybird species were determined. Of these, the 7-spot ladybird, Coccinella septempunctata, was the commonest species. The density of the 22-spot ladybird, Psyllobora vigintiduopunctata, was higher than that of the other ladybirds in almost all habitats surveyed. Frequencies of the black and yellow forms of the 14-spot ladybird, Propylea quatuordecimpunctata, in the area showed a tendency to be associated with open and shaded habitats respectively. Moreover, the …

Molecular Cloning Of An \Alpha-Amylase Gene From Bacillus Subtilis Rskk246 And Its Expression In Escherichia Coli And In Bacillus Subtilis, Numan Özcan, Adem Altinalan, Mehmet Sai̇t Eki̇nci̇ Jan 2001

Molecular Cloning Of An \Alpha-Amylase Gene From Bacillus Subtilis Rskk246 And Its Expression In Escherichia Coli And In Bacillus Subtilis, Numan Özcan, Adem Altinalan, Mehmet Sai̇t Eki̇nci̇

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Bacillus subtilis RSKK246 was found to produce approximately a 65-kDa \alpha-amylase enzyme. A gene was isolated encoding \alpha-amylase activity that corresponded to this size and was inserted into pUC18 plasmid which was transferred to Escherichia coli. An approximately 1.7kbp fragment, which contains a whole \alpha-amylase gene, was excised and inserted into pUB110 and then transferred into the different B. subtilis strains including RSKK246, RSKK243, RSKK244, YB886 and ORBAM. The a-amylase gene was cloned into the plasmids and expressed with its own promoter, and this promoter sequence seemed to function in the E. coli and in all B. subtilis strains. Specific …

A total of 220 sheep sera were tested against B. ovis using the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). In addition, peripheral blood smears from these sheep were prepared and examined for B. ovis. The ELISA test showed that 55.9% of sheep were seropositive for B. ovis infection. The infection rate was 49.2% in sheep which were 1-12 months old and 59% in sheep which were older than one year. In the microscopic examination of blood smears, four out of 220 sheep were found …

The feed conversion ratio (kg feed consumed/kg live weight gain) was 5.01. The effect of year on final fattening weight, total weight gain and average daily weight gain was found to be significant (p
