Turkish Journal of Zoology

Water temperature (°C), pH, dissolved oxygen concentration (mg/l) and the community structure of the macrobenthos of a small southeast Texas sand-pit (Barry's) lake were studied from June 1995 to February 1996, which covered climatic extremes. The lake was a warm monomictic lake and no anoxic conditions were observed at any depth during the entire study period. A total of 50 taxa and 5614 individuals of macrobenthos were collected. The dominant organisms were Chaoborus punctipennis (Say), Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri (Claparede), and Dero obtusa (Udekem). The only established populations at 6.5 m were Chaoborus punctipennis, Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri, and Chironomus sp. Species diversity ranged …

The Toxic Effects Of Malathion (Organophosphate Insecticide) On The Daphnia Magna Straus, 1820 (Crustacea, Cladocera), Maryam Rassoulzadegan, Nusret Akyurtlakli

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The toxic effects of technical grade (95 %) malathion and commercial (25 %) malathion were investigated on young (£ 24 h old) Daphnia magna in static acute toxicity tests (24 and 48 h). The culture of D. magna and toxicity tests were performed at 24 ± 1 ºC with a photoperiod of 16 h light and 8 h dark. To obtain a healthy population, the fecundity of each female in their life cycle was also investigated. The immobilization of daphnids was considered for determination of the 24 h / 48 h effective concentration (50 %). The EC50 values were found …

Impact Of Two Sublethal Concentrations Of Copper Chloride And Chlorine On The Excretory Products Of Crab Sesarma Quadratum (Fabricius), Santhana Valarmathi, Jayapaul Azariah Jan 2002

Impact Of Two Sublethal Concentrations Of Copper Chloride And Chlorine On The Excretory Products Of Crab Sesarma Quadratum (Fabricius), Santhana Valarmathi, Jayapaul Azariah

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Excretion in estuarine animals is considered to be an important factor in assessing their physiological status. The pattern of oxygen consumption and excretion patterns (ammonia and nitrite) in medium size mud crabs of S. quadratum (3 to 4 g weight) were studied under laboratory conditions at two sublethal concentrations of 1/10 and 1/3 of the LC_{50} value of copper chloride and chlorine. The rates of oxygen consumption and excreted products were negatively correlated to the sublethal concentrations of the toxicant. Reduced rates of oxygen consumption and excretion of ammonia and nitrite were observed when exposed to these sublethal concentrations.

Age Determination Of Shad (Alosa Pontica Eichwald,1838) Inhabiting The Black Sea, Savaş Yilmaz, Nazmi̇ Polat

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The most reliable bony structure and method were investigated for age determination of shad (Alosa pontica Eichwald, 1838) inhabiting the Black Sea. Therefore, five bony structures such as scale, vertebra, otolith, opercle and subopercle were removed from 240 individuals collected from April 1998 to April 1999. Each bony structure was prepared for age determination by different techniques, and examined by binocular microscope. Mean ages were estimated for each bony structure-reader combination and the precision of age estimated from multiple readings was evaluated. Furthermore, the error of ageing was calculated. Vertebra was the most reliable bony structure for ageing this species …

Effects Of Indoleacetic Acid And Kinetin On Lipid Peroxidation Levels In Various Rat Tissues, İsmai̇l Çeli̇k, Yasi̇n Tülüce, Necati̇ Özok

Turkish Journal of Biology

This study was carried out to investigate whether plant growth regulators (PGRs) could affect lipid peroxidation (Malondialdehyde = MDA level) in erythrocyte, muscle, liver, heart and kidney tissue. Eighteen Sprague-Dawley albino rats were divided into three experimental groups: control and PGR-treated (indoleacetic acid and kinetin). Seventy-five ppm of PGRs, indoleacetic acid (IAA), and kinetin were administered orally to 6 rats ad libitum for 25 days. The hormone treatments caused different effects on the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) to those of the control rats. According to the results, while liver and kidney MDA levels were increased significantly by IAA administration in …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The cardiovascular/respiratory and clinical effects of a xylazine-ketamine combination or a butorphanol-ketamine combination for the induction of anaesthesia in dogs were compared. A total of 12 dogs (two groups 6 dogs each) were premedicated with either xylazine (group I) or butorphanol (group II) and anaesthetized with ketamine HCl and monitored at 0, 5, 15, 30 and 60 min after induction. Sedative effects in both groups started within 15 min. Respiratory rate was significantly decreased in group I (P < 0.05). Body temperature was significantly altered after 15 min in group I (P < 0.05 and P < 0.001). Haematological analyses indicated that there were no differences in pH values between the groups. It was concluded that butorphanol followed by ketamine was comparable with xylazine plus ketamine for the induction of anaesthesia in healthy dogs.

Protein bands of crude antigens of Hymenolepis nana were determined by SDS-PAGE and Western blotting. Thirty Swiss albino mice were allotted into two groups of 15 each as positive (infected with H. nana) and negative (non-infected with H. nana) groups. The natural infections of H. nana and other helminths were determined by centrifugal flotation of faeces. After bleeding, the mice were necropsied and their guts were examined for H. nana and other intestinal helminths. Sera from mice were tested by Western blotting and the bands obtained from positive and negative groups were compared. The specific protein band for H. nana …
