The Reproduction Biology Of Chub (Leuciscus Cephalus L. 1758) In Topçam Dam Lake (Aydın, Turkey), Hüseyi̇n Şaşi

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, the reproduction biology of 332 chub (Leuciscus cephalus L. 1758) was studied from June, 1999, to June, 2000, on a monthly basis in Topçam Dam Lake. Egg numbers were estimated in 65 females caught just prior to spawning. The sex and age compositions of chub were determined. The specimens were composed of 27.11% males and 72.89% females. Male and female chub become sexually mature in the second year of their life spans. Spawning is in March and April. The fecundity of chub varies from 2100-66,400 per female. The average egg diameter was between 0.391 and 0.744 mm …

Effects Of Different Plant Species And Different Sowing Dates On Forage Yield, Grazing Capacity And Estimated Carcass Weight In The Continental Climate Zones, Sadik Çakmakçi, Bi̇lal Aydinoğlu, Mehmet Arslan, Mehmet Teti̇k

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This research was conducted to study the effects of artificial sowing with various plant species and different sowing dates on forage yield, grazing capacity and estimated carcass weight in rangelands under continental dry conditions. Artificial rangelands were established on Akpınar plateau near Kemer-Burdur 1675 m above sea level using 4 different plant species sown at 5 different sowing dates. Later, grazing capacity and carcass weight were estimated in terms of forage yield. The results showed that the best sowing date of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) was sowing date 4 (the last week of October) and 1447 cattle could graze in …

Brucellosis Seroprevalence In Southeast Turkey (Diyarbakır), Selahatti̇n Atmaca, Tuncer Özeki̇nci̇, Nezahat Akpolat, Saffet Elçi̇, Adnan Suay, Eralp Arikan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

This study was conducted to determine brucellosis seropositivity in patients suspected of having brucellosis who sought treatment at the Central Laboratory of Dicle University Medical Faculty Hospital in southeast Turkey (Diyarbakır). 20,663 serum samples were collected during the study (1 August 2001-31 December 2002), and 14,480 sera were tested in a 12-month period on a seasonal basis by Rose-Bengal slide agglutination (RBSA), and positive sera were titrated by standard tube agglutination (STA). Titration values of 1/160 and above were considered positive. Of the 20663 sera, 463 (2.2%) tested positive on RBSA. Of these 463 sera, 267 (57.6%) tested positive on …

The Effect Of Ischemia Reperfusion On Intestinal Contractility Regulated By The Nitrergic System, Fatma Çağlayan, Ayşe Şahi̇n, Engi̇n Günel, Murat Çakmak, Osman Çağlayan Jan 2004

The Effect Of Ischemia Reperfusion On Intestinal Contractility Regulated By The Nitrergic System, Fatma Çağlayan, Ayşe Şahi̇n, Engi̇n Günel, Murat Çakmak, Osman Çağlayan

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Because of the interaction between nitric oxide (NO) and the superoxide anion radical, the effect of ischemia-reperfusion on intestinal contractility regulated by the nitrergic system was investigated in the present study. The study was performed on 3 groups of rabbits: group 1, ischemia; group 2, ischemia and 1 h of reperfusion; group 3, ischemia and 24 h of reperfusion. Tissue samples were obtained from ischemic, ischemia-reperfused and adjacent uninjured intestines as study and control samples. The effects of atropine, tetrodotoxin, L-NAME and L-arginine on the intestinal response to electrical field stimulation (EFS) were investigated. Guanethidine was used to minimize adrenergic …

The Reproductive Biology Of The Tench (Tinca Tinca L., 1758) In Kayaboğazı (Kütahya, Turkey) Dam Lake, Ali̇ Alaş, Kemal Solak

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was carried out between January 1996 and December 1997 in Kayaboğazı Dam Lake. During this period 424 specimens were examined. The age of females and males ranged from I to VII. The fork length and weight of females and males were 102-277 mm and 15-377.02 g and 125-274 mm and 27-369.02 g, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference between females and males in terms of body length and weight. The sex ratio (male:female) was 0.947:1. Gonadosomatic index values varied from 1.40 to 10.19. The sexual maturity age for males and females was III and IV, respectively. The spawning …

The Effect Of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (Hbo) When Used Postoperatively In Skin Grafting Over Radiated Tissue In The Rat, Burçak Tümerdem, Ufuk Emekli̇, Burcu Çelet Özden, Şami̇l Aktaş, Mi̇sten Demi̇ryont, Gönül Kemi̇kler Jan 2004

The Effect Of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (Hbo) When Used Postoperatively In Skin Grafting Over Radiated Tissue In The Rat, Burçak Tümerdem, Ufuk Emekli̇, Burcu Çelet Özden, Şami̇l Aktaş, Mi̇sten Demi̇ryont, Gönül Kemi̇kler

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Under conditions that may risk the success of flap surgery, free skin grafting may be an option for the reconstruction of the irradiated area. Clinical observations reveal that skin grafts applied to irradiated area undergo ulceration, resulting in chronic open wounds. The role of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) in problem wounds is to increase the tissue oxygen tension to optimize fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis, to enhance the oxidative killing capacity of the white blood cells and to stimulate angiogenesis. HBO has also been shown to stimulate angiogenesis in radiation-damaged tissue. In view of this data, an animal model is …

Histological, Histochemical And Ultrastructural Investigations On The Esophagus Of Juvenile Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Fati̇me Geyi̇koğlu, Özgen Vuraler, Aysel Temelli̇

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The histology of the esophagus of Oncorhynchus mykiss was studied. The structure of the esophagus exhibited differences as well as similarities when compared with previous studies. In this study, the histochemical and ultrastructural structure of the tunica muscularis externa in the esophagus of this fish is investigated. The muscle fibers are described as red and intermediate fibers according to the pH stability of their mATPase activities. The red fibers showed intense staining, while intermediate fibers showed moderate staining with succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) and toluidine blue. In addition, small diameter fibres were seen. These indicated to be the continuation of development …

Inhibitory Effect Of Bursa Propolis On Dental Caries Formation In Rats Inoculated With Streptococcus Sobrinus, Gamze Bozcuk Erdem, Seval Ölmez

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The effect of propolis on the growth of Lactobacillus casei RSKK 591, Streptococcus mutans NCTC 10449 and Streptococcus sobrinus DSN sobrinus 20742 was investigated in vitro. Bursa propolis had the most inhibitory effect on S. sobrinus. The effect of Bursa propolis on rats inoculated with S. sobrinus was also studied. In rats inoculated with the bacteria and given propolis, the severity of sulcal enamel and superficial dentine lesions was significantly less than that in the control group, but colony forming unit numbers and the caries scores in other levels were not different. Weight gains, and the food and water consumption …
