Biotin Affects The Immune Response Of Piglets Inoculated With Porcine Circovirus Type 2, Chen Hong, Zhang Keying, Ding Xuemei, Chen Daiwen
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Weanling crossbred pigs were used in a 5-week trial to evaluate the effects of biotin and porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) challenge on serum cytokine concentrations and humoral immunoresponse. Although not significant, there was a trend towards reduced interferon-\gamma concentration in the challenged pigs compared to the controls, especially at 14 and 21 days postinoculation (dpi). Biotin supplementation with 50 or 200 µg/kg biotin improved these levels, with higher doses producing an earlier and stronger response. Although the magnitude of the immune response was small and inconsistent, diet supplementation with 50 or 200 µg/kg biotin appeared to increase serum immunoglobulin …

It has long been considered that aloe has many beneficial effects for humans and animals, exhibiting antibiotic, antihistaminic, anesthetic, antiinflammatory, and immunostimulant properties. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of supplemental aloe preparation on some immunological and hematological indices of turkey hen blood. The study involved 160 medium-heavy BUT-9-type 6-week-old female turkey hens, administered Aloe-plus plant preparation at the following varying concentrations: Group 1, control without aloe addition; Group 2, daily doses of 0.35 mL/kg body weight; Group 3, daily doses of 0.70 mL/kg body weight; and Group 4, daily doses of 1.40 mL/kg body …

Purification And Characterization Of Glutathione Reductase From Turkey Liver, Pinar Taşer, Mehmet Çi̇ftci̇
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study aimed to purify glutathione reductase (GR) from turkey liver and investigate some of its characteristic features. The purification procedure comprised 2 steps: homogenate preparation and 2',5'-ADP Sepharose 4B affinity gel chromatography. Thanks to the 2 consecutive procedures, the enzyme, having the specific activity of 606.67 EU mg protein^{-1}, was purified with a yield of 10.75% and 2476-fold, and, in order to control enzyme purity, SDS-PAGE was done. Optimal pH, stable pH, optimal temperature, optimal ionic strength, molecular weight, turnover number of enzyme, and k_{cat}/K_M and K_M and V_{max} values for NADPH and glutathione disulfide substrates were also determined …

A 12-week feeding trial was conducted with rainbow trout fry (initial weight of 1.57 ± 0.01 g) to examine the effects of partial substitution of canola meal in prepared diets on growth, feed conversion ratio (FCR), nutrient digestibility, somatic indices, and survival rate. Five isonitrogenous (44% crude protein) and isocaloric (4000 kcal/kg digestible energy) diets were formulated to contain 8%, 16%, 24%, and 32% canola meal against no canola meal (control group). A total of 375 rainbow trout were distributed into 5 experimental groups with 3 replicates. At the end of the experiment, the fish that were fed diets containing …

A 3-year-old female dog was referred to the clinics of İstanbul University with the complaint of abdominal distention. On the basis of the clinical findings and ultrasonography, a mass was detected in the left ovary. An ovariohysterectomy was performed. Grossly, the mass, with dimensions of 15 × 11 × 8 cm, weighed 1.2 kg and contained hairs, cysts, fat, bone, and cartilage on the cut surface. Histology revealed the occurrence of well-differentiated components of all 3 germ layers and the mass was diagnosed as a benign mature cystic teratoma.

Cymothoidae are cosmopolitan, ubiquitous, and nonspecific parasites of fish of different biotopes causing a significant economic loss to fisheries either by killing and stunting or simply by damaging their hosts. This study represents the first record of Mothocya melanosticta from the Red Sea, with a new host record in Myripristis murdjan (pinecone soldierfish), the other resident species of the fish-parasitic isopod family Cymothoidae in Egypt. The recovered Mothocya melanosticta was of moderate body size (17.7 × 8.2 mm) and had a cephalon with widely truncated rostrum, short pleotelson with uropod rami not extending beyond the telson, and the presence of …

The influence of various parameters such as amount of cysteine\cdot HCl, reducing agent, pH value, and reaction time on labeling process was studied. After optimizing the conditions the labeling was performed at pH 5 using 1 mg of levofloxacin, 500 \mu g of cysteine\cdot HCl, 50 \mu g of SnCl_2.2H_2O, and 15 min reaction time. The radiochemical purity was determined with the help of instant thin layer chromatography (ITLC) and reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) which was more than 95% and was stable …

A series of 3-[(4-substitutedpiperazin-1-yl)methyl]-1H-indole derivatives were synthesized, and their structures were confirmed by spectral analysis. All the compounds were tested for their cytotoxic activity in vitro against 3 human tumor cell lines: human liver (HUH7), breast (MCF7), and colon (HCT116). Among the designed derivatives, most of the compounds showed significant cytotoxicity against liver and colon cancer cell lines with lower IC_{50} concentrations than the standard drug 5-fluorouracil. Compound 3s, with 3,4-dichlorophenyl substituent on the piperazine ring, was the most active in suppressing the growth of all screened cancer cells.

Acute Toxicity Of Nickel To Fresh Water Prawns, Ravi Shanker Verma
Turkish Journal of Zoology
In the present study, the LC_{50} of nickel and its impact on the behaviour of 2 species of freshwater prawns, Macrobrachium lamarrei (H. Milne Edwards) and Macrobrachium dayanum (Henderson) was evaluated. An inverse relationship between LC_{50} values and exposure duration was obtained. Nickel was found to be 6.33 times more toxic to M. lamarrei than to M. dayanum. Nickel exposure increased aggression and loss of balance in both species of prawns in a concentration-dependent manner with both parameters being higher in M. dayanum (416.47 mg/L) than in M. lamarrei (65.77 mg/L). All behavioural parameters decreased with increase in exposure duration …
