Using Body Condition Index Can Be An Unreliable Indicator Of Fitness: A Case Of Sand Lizard Lacerta Agilis Linnaeus, 1758 (Sauria: Lacertidae), Krzysztof Dudek, Zofia Sajkowska, Monika Gawalek, Anna Ekner-Grzyb

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In ecological and morphological studies, researchers often use body condition index as a measure of an individual's fitness. Our research shows that body condition index may be an unreliable method for this purpose, because changes in lizards' body proportions are not stable during their lifetime. Results obtained from a Polish population of the sand lizard (Lacerta agilis) show that the body length increases faster than the body mass, meaning that the correlation between these 2 parameters is not linear. Herpetologists frequently use the body condition index to compare the fitness of lizards of different ages. Our study demonstrates that this …

Impacts Of Logging And Prescribed Burning In Longleaf Pine Forests Managed Under Uneven-Aged Silviculture, Ferhat Kara, Edward Francis Loewenstein Jan 2015

Impacts Of Logging And Prescribed Burning In Longleaf Pine Forests Managed Under Uneven-Aged Silviculture, Ferhat Kara, Edward Francis Loewenstein

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) ecosystem has historically been very important in the southeastern United States due to its extensive area and high biodiversity. Successful regeneration of longleaf pine forests requires an adequate number of well-distributed seedlings. Thus, mortality of longleaf pine seedlings during logging operations and prescribed burning appears to be important. Longleaf forests have been commonly managed using even-aged silvicultural methods, but, recently, interest in the use of uneven-aged (UEA) methods has increased in these forests. Research on the impact of UEA logging in longleaf forests is limited. In addition, the influence of overstory density on the …

Phylogenetic Relationships Among Populations Of Pristurus Rupestris Blanford,1874 (Sauria: Sphaerodactylidae) In Southern Iran, Sugol Yousofi, Eskandar Rastegar Pouyani, Vida Hojati

Turkish Journal of Zoology

We examined intraspecific relationships of the subspecies Pristurus rupestris iranicus from the northern Persian Gulf area (Hormozgan, Bushehr, and Sistan and Baluchestan provinces). Phylogenetic relationships among these samples were estimated based on the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. We used three methods of phylogenetic tree reconstruction (maximum likelihood, maximum parsimony, and Bayesian inference). The sampled populations were divided into 5 clades but exhibit little genetic divergence between populations, suggesting that these all represent a single species and subspecies. The low genetic divergences suggest that the species may have expanded its range within Iran since the last drying period of the Persian …

The contig distributions in three nonmutually exclusive gene ontology classifications and clusters of orthologous gene classes were assigned, which were also used to identify genes related to nitrogen fixation. Furthermore, a set of 1729 reads with simple sequence repeat (SSR) motifs were identified. Subsets of 55 SSR primer pairs were selected to validate SSR marker assay. Fifty-five primer pairs were used to amplify from one or more of the …
