Multiclass Semantic Segmentation Of Faces Using Crfs, Khalil Khan, Nasir Ahmad, Khalil Ullah, Irfanud Din
Multiclass Semantic Segmentation Of Faces Using Crfs, Khalil Khan, Nasir Ahmad, Khalil Ullah, Irfanud Din
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Multiclass semantic image segmentation is widely used in a variety of computer vision tasks, such as object segmentation and complex scene understanding. As it decomposes an image into semantically relevant regions, it can be applied in segmentation of face images. In this paper, an algorithm based on multiclass semantic segmentation of faces is proposed using conditional random fields. In the proposed model, each node corresponds to a superpixel, while the neighboring superpixels are connected to nodes through edges. Unlike previous approaches, which rely on three or four classes, the label set is extended here to six classes, i.e. hair, eyes, …

Tgf-β: Its Role In The Differentiation And Function Of T Regulatory And Effector Cells, Sujuan Yang, Songguo Zheng
Turkish Journal of Biology
The cytokine transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) plays an important role in the maintenance of T cell homeostasis, immune tolerance to self-antigens, and T cell differentiation during immune responses. TGF-β has pleiotropic effects on adaptive immune responses, especially on the differentiation of T helper and T regulatory cell populations, which depends on the T cell differentiation status and the stimulation conditions. This review provides an update about the roles of TGF-β in T cell responses, especially in the regulation of Treg development and biological features under steady state and inflammation. We also discuss the additional roles that TGF-β plays in the …

The Sca1+ Mesenchymal Stromal Subpopulation Promotesdendritic Cell Commitment In The Niche, Na Li, Dandan Yin, Huijie Zhang, Jinmei Xu, Fan Wen, Zheng Liu, Yaozhen Chen, Ning An, Jiajia Xin, Yazhou Wang, Wen Yin, Xingbin Hu
Turkish Journal of Biology
The hematopoietic microenvironment regulates self-renewal and differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) contribute to the niche and participate in supporting dendritic cell (DC) commitment in vitro and in vivo. However, due to MSCs being heterogenic, it is necessary to understand the function of the MSC subpopulation in modulating the DC commitment. The current study showed that one of the bone-related Sca1+ MSCs enhanced bone marrow cell differentiation into DCs by direct cell-to-cell contact. Furthermore, the expression of STAT3 and STAT5 genes decreased in supernatant cells after Sca1+ MSCs were cocultured with bone marrow cells. In contrast, the …

Turkish Journal of Biology
Variation in drought resistance and its relationship with adaptive and physiological traits in forest trees are important in choosing suitable seed sources for reforestation and afforestation programs. A common garden experiment using 240 half-sib families originating from coastal and inland populations of Turkish red pine (Pinus brutia) in Turkey was set up with three replicates. The aims were to determine variation of drought damage, height growth, and phenology among populations and to investigate the relationship between drought damage and physiological traits (i.e. plant moisture stress and proline content). Three-year-old seedlings were subjected to drought treatment during the summer of 2000 …

Covariation In Diaspore Mass And Dispersal Patterns In Threemediterranean Coastal Dunes In Southern Spain, Carmen Rodriguez, Teresa Navarro, Ali El Keblawy
Turkish Journal of Botany
The coastal dunes of southern Spain are an original Mediterranean ecosystem, insufficiently studied under dispersal. This study explores covariation patterns among diaspore mass, size, morphology, dispersal mode, and spatial dispersal in 78 native coastal dune species. Three coastal dunes under different climates were sampled and differentiated between fixed and mobile dunes. The Pérez-Harguindeguy methodology was applied and ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney U tests were used in order to analyze the covariation. Diaspores were essentially small seeds or achenes (2-4 mm, from 10-5 to 1 g). The study revealed that diaspore mass is a key trait in the differentiation among dunes. …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Pressure overload induces cardiac remodelling and results in heart failure. Enhanced sympathetic outflow participates in the development of cardiac remodelling for the duration of pressure overload as an independent factor. Valproic acid has recently been shown to reduce neuronal injury and have antiinflammatory and antiapoptotic effects as a histone deacetylase inhibitor. We speculate that the drug plays a specific role in alleviating cardiac remodelling by inhibiting sympathetic activity. Materials and methods: Surgery of partial abdominal aortic constriction was performed on male Sprague-Dawley rats. After 4 weeks, animal models of pressure overload were validated and then valproic acid (300 mg/kg) …

Turkish Journal of Biology
In tissue engineering, the use of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA)/polybutylene succinate (PBS) blend for the construction of scaffold is very limited. Moreover, polymeric sponges fabricated from PLLA/PBS have not been studied for neural tissue engineering. In the present study, the potential of the utility of PLLA/PBS polymeric sponges seeded with Schwann cells was investigated. PLLA and PBS were blended in order to increase the processability and tune the crystallinity, porosity, and degradation rate of the resulted polymeric sponges. These sponges were then seeded with Schwann cells. Porosity analysis showed that there were no significant differences between different compositions of PLLA/PBS blends; …

Turkish Journal of Biology
Recent studies have reported that cancer stem cells (CSCs) play a pivotal role in treatment failure, causing cancer recurrence. Here, we investigated the effects of L-NAME (an iNOS inhibitor) and celecoxib (a selective COX-2 inhibitor) on CSC-like cells (CSC-LCs) and their parental cells. Breast CSC-LCs derived from the MCF-7 cell line were sorted and characterized with the CD44+/CD24-/low phenotype. After isolation, the percentage of the subpopulation expressing CD44+/CD24-/low biomarkers increased considerably from 0.96% to 28.6%. Use of L-NAME and celecoxib showed antiproliferative activity towards both MCF-7 and CSC-LCs. Although celecoxib enhanced apoptotic cell death, the CSC-LC population was more resistant …

Ampicillin Activates Mpk1 Phosphorylation In Saccharomyces Cerevisiaeand Erk1/2 Phosphorylation In Hepg2 Cells, Yukyong Shin, Kiyoung Kim
Turkish Journal of Biology
Ampicillin has been widely used to treat bacterial infections. When we used ampicillin to eliminate bacterial contamination in yeast cultures, we observed induction of phosphorylation of MAP kinase 1 (Mpk1), a previously unknown function of ampicillin. We therefore investigated whether ampicillin activates the signal transduction pathway. Phosphorylation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae Mpk1 was induced by ampicillin in a dose- and time-dependent manner through the PKC1-CWI pathway. Mpk1 phosphorylation was maximal after treatment with 3 mM ampicillin for 90 min. Despite activation of Mpk1 phosphorylation, ampicillin did not influence yeast cell growth. Ampicillin reduced miconazole antifungal activity; miconazole had a minimum inhibitory …

Aggregation Of A Parthenogenetic Diploid Embryo And A Male Embryo Improves The Blastocyst Development And Parthenogenetic Embryonic Stem Cell Derivation, Xiaoyan Qiu, Nan Li, Xiong Xiao, Yuemin Li
Turkish Journal of Biology
Parthenogenetically derived mammalian embryos, with no paternal genome, are not viable and die, largely from defective placental growth attributed to a lack of paternal effect, resulting in the low blastulation rate and low derivation efficiency of parthenogenetic embryonic stem cells (pESCs). Therefore, the present study, by the optimization of parthenogenetic embryo production and the aggregation of the parthenogenetic diploid embryo and the identified male embryo, aims to investigate a method to improve the development of parthenogenetic embryo and pESC derivation in mice. The presence of uninhibited side effects of cancer drugs often used in cancer treatment has stimulated the search for alternative therapeutic approaches. Therefore, anticarcinogenic effects of synthetic, herbal, and fungal drugs have been investigated for the treatment of various cancer types in recent studies. Lichens, symbiotic organisms of fungi and algae, synthesize metabolites with significant biological activities. The aim of the current study was to screen the anticancer potential of usnic acid on various types of nonmalignant cell lines (Vero, L929) and cancer cell lines (CaCo2, RD, Hep2C, HepG2, Wehi). The growth inhibitory effect of usnic acid was determined by …

This study aims to explore the role and the possible underlying molecular mechanism of SNF5 in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). MH7A cells were respectively transfected with pc-SNF5 (pcDNA3.1 containing the Brg1 coding sequence), short hairpin RNA against SNF5 (shSNF5), and their negative controls (pcDNA3.1 and shNC). The alterations of SNF5 expression were assessed by qRT-PCR and western blot analysis. MTT assay, flow cytometry, and western blot analysis were performed to evaluate proliferation, apoptosis, and expression levels of p16 and JNK pathway associated proteins, respectively. Finally, the effect of SNF5 was verified in fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs) obtained from a …
