Background/aim: Delayed wound healing in diabetic patients is a significant complication that reduces quality of life, prompting the continuous investigation of new therapeutic agents. This study designed to explore the dose-dependent effects of different parts of Chelidonium majus L. (CM), a medicinal plant traditionally used for skin disorders, on diabetic skin wounds.

Materials and methods: In diabetic rats, full-thickness excisional wounds were formed. CM-containing gels (aerial parts at 3%, 6%, 9% and root at 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%) were developed and applied to the wounds. After the treatment period, the rats were sacrificed, and wound healing activity was assessed macroscopically, histopathologically, …

Optimization And Model Averaging Of Histogram-Based Place Cell Firing Rate Maps Using The Point Process Framework, Murat Okatan Jul 2025

Optimization And Model Averaging Of Histogram-Based Place Cell Firing Rate Maps Using The Point Process Framework, Murat Okatan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The firing rate of hippocampal place cells depends on the spatial position of the organism in an environment. This position dependence is often quantified by constructing spike-in-location and time-in-location histograms, the ratio of which yields a firing rate map. The purpose of this study is to present a new method for optimizing the spatial resolution of histogram-based firing rate maps. It is pointed out that histogram-based firing rate maps are conditional intensity functions of inhomogeneous Poisson process models of neural spike trains, and, as such, they can be optimized through model selection within the point process framework. The point process …

The Effects Of S-Metolachlor On Some Fatty Acids And Fatty Acids Gene Expressions In Safflower (Carthamus Tinctorius L.), Gi̇zem Nardemi̇r, Güleray Ağar, Mahmut Si̇nan Taşpinar

Turkish Journal of Botany

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius (L.)) is one of the widely studied plants due to its resistance to abiotic stress, suitability for summer and winter cultivation, rich in nutrients and linoleic acid. Thus, it has become more important compared to other oil plants in recent years. Weed infestation affects the growth of this cultivated plant during the greening period. S-metolachlor is one of the widely used herbicides that prevent the growth of weeds. In this study, three different doses of S-metolachlor (1, 2 and 4 g of active substance/L) were applied to two different safflower genotypes (Dinçer and Remzibey-05), and their effects …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Palms are slow-growing arboreal monocots predominantly distributed across warm regions and are frequently incorporated into parks, gardens, and roadsides. The red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, is a highly destructive invasive insect that threatens palms. This field study investigated the effectiveness of a seismic sensor system to detect R. ferrugineus larvae on palm trees in the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Culture Park. This park is home to a diverse collection of palm species, including Washingtonia sp. and Phoenix dactylifera. Seismic sensors were attached to the trunks of palm trees to detect the vibrations caused by feeding R. ferrugineus larvae and calibrated to …

The First Documented Case Of Melanism In Sciurus Anomalus, Recorded In Türkiye, Burak Akdağ, Balkan Mega

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This study reports the first documented case of melanism in the Caucasian squirrel (Sciurus anomalus) from Türkiye. While melanism has been documented in 12 other species within the Sciurus genus, it has not previously been recorded in S. anomalus. The observation was made during a herpetological field survey in Erzincan Province, Türkiye, where a melanistic specimen was photographed in a mixed habitat comprising natural vegetation and cultivated land. In mammals, melanism is widely regarded as an adaptive trait, potentially conferring advantages such as improved thermoregulation in colder climates and enhanced crypsis in shaded forest environments. This novel observation not only …

Winter Breeding Of The Long-Eared Owl (Asio Otus) In Türkiye, Alaz Uslu, Gencer Yaprak, Sali̇h Tora Benzeyen, Alper Tüydeş, İbrahi̇m Kaan Özgenci̇l

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The long-eared owl (Asio otus) is a widespread nocturnal raptor found across the Holarctic, inhabiting a variety of wooded habitats with adjacent open areas. While the species is not globally threatened, its population is declining, which is primarily attributed to threats such as habitat degradation, pesticide use, hunting, and disturbance. Although winter breeding has been documented in several European countries, no such records have been reported from Türkiye up to date. In this study, we compiled 11 records of winter breeding long-eared owls from northwest and central Türkiye, based on our field observations and data from rehabilitation centers. The estimated …

Turkish Journal of Biology

Background/aim: Metformin is commonly used to manage type 2 diabetes (T2D) and is being investigated for its potential antiproliferative effects in cancer, particularly in patients with both T2D and malignancies. Drug resistance can develop with any therapeutic agent, and metformin is no exception. As we showed in our previous study, metformin-resistant MDA-MB-468 (MET-R) cells exhibited an EMT-like phenotype. Many transcription factors, as well as miRNAs, can contribute to this altered phenotype. Our current study identifies the contribution of hsa-miR-26a-5p expression to the previously observed phenotype. Materials and methods: By utilizing bioinformatic tools, we identified hsa-miR-26a-5p, whose expression was significantly altered …

Turkish Journal of Biology

Background/aim: Boron is an essential micronutrient for plants and certain bacteria, where it plays critical roles in cellular processes at low concentrations. However, elevated levels of boron-containing compounds, such as boric acid, exhibit antimicrobial toxicity. Although the physiological effects of boric acid on bacteria have been partially characterized, its proteome-wide impacts remain poorly elucidated. This study employs a 2D-PAGE-based proteomic approach to investigate how sublethal boric acid stress alters the cytoplasmic proteome of Escherichia coli BW25113. Materials and methods: E. coli BW25113 cultures were grown to mid-log phase in tryptic soy broth (TSB) and exposed to 70 mM boric acid …

The sensitivity of ram semen to cryobiological procedures has motivated many researchers to investigate this issue. In clinical practice, one of the main objectives is to reduce the damage caused by freezing cells through the addition of preservatives to semen diluents. In our study, fetal calf serum (15% FCS) and 3–6 mM cysteamine were added to ram semen diluents, and their effects on semen after freeze-thawing were investigated. Semen was collected from five Kıvırcık rams using an electroejaculator and combined in equal volumes (pooling). After macroscopic and microscopic examination, the samples were divided into six equal volumes. Six study groups …

Animal genetic resources are recognized as an indispensable component of humanity’s natural heritage and are essential for ensuring environmental sustainability for future generations. The aim of this study was to investigate the genetic diversity, population structure, and presence of genetic bottlenecks in three indigenous Turkish sheep breeds: Dağlıç, Karagül, and Sakız, all of which are conserved as genetic resources in Türkiye. Genomic DNA was extracted from 140 blood samples using the salt precipitation technique. These samples were collected from the Sakız (n = 53), Dağlıç (n = 58), and Karagül (n = 29) breeds, which were reared on 13 farms …
