Background/aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the possible toxicity of the Ankaferd Blood Stopper (ABS) on the neural system. Materials and methods: Thirty Sprague Dawley rats were randomized into ABS (n: 15) and control (n: 15) groups. Following the anaesthetic induction, total laminectomy was performed to the lower thoracic, and upper lumbar areas in both groups and medulla spinalis was exposed. Two myelotomies were performed on the medulla spinalis. One millilitre ABS was applied to the incision site in the ABS group, and one millilitre 0.9% saline solution was applied in the control group. Rats were observed …

Background/aim: We aimed to develop a rapid method to enumerate Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) utilizing magnetic nanoparticle based preconcentration and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy measurements. Materials and methods: Biological activities of magnetic Au-nanoparticles have been observed to have the high biocompatibility, and a sample immunosensor model has been designed to use avidin attached Au-nanoparticles for L. monocytogenes detection. Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium) bacteria cultures were chosen for control studies. Antimicrobial activity studies have been done to identify bio-compatibility and bio-characterization of the Au-nanoparticles in our previous study and capturing efficiencies to bacterial surfaces have been also …

Iron Homeostasis Is Altered In Response To Hypoxia And Hypothermic Preconditioning Inbrain Glial Cells, Lati̇fe Arzu Aral, Mehmet Ali̇ Ergün, Ayşe Başak Engi̇n, Alp Özgün Börcek, Hayrunni̇sa Bolay Belen
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Altered iron metabolism is one of the pathophysiological mechanisms occurring during hypoxic injuries in the central nervous system. Proper homeostasis of cellular iron is regulated by iron import, storage, and export proteins that prevent excess iron overload or iron starvation in cells. Therapeutic hypothermia is an approved treatment for hypoxic ischemia in newborns, but the underlying molecular mechanism is still unknown. We studied the effects of hypoxia, preceded with preconditioning, on the iron homeostasis of glial cells, known as a major actor in the inflammatory process during perinatal brain injury. Materials and methods: Primary microglia and astrocytes in culture …

Antioxidative Effects Of Uridine In A Neonatal Rat Model Of Hyperoxic Brain Injury, Nevi̇n Al, Ayşen Çakir, Cansu Sevi̇nç, Mehmet Cansev, Tüli̇n Alkan
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Premature birth is a major problem that results in an increased risk of mortality and morbidity. The management of such infants consists of supraphysiological oxygen therapy, which affects brain development due, in part, to the deterioration caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS). We showed previously that exogenously administered uridine provides neuroprotection in a neonatal rat model of hyperoxic brain injury. Hence, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of uridine on ROS in the same setting. Materials and methods: Hyperoxic brain injury was induced by subjecting a total of 53 six-day-old rat pups to 80% …

Materials and methods: The study was performed in 29 stroke patients within the subacute period and 29 healthy controls using QTRAC software and TRONDNF protocol. The threshold electrotonus, recovery cycle, stimulus-response, strength-duration, and current-threshold relationships were recorded. Results: The membrane was more hyperpolarized, and excitability was decreased in the hemiplegic side. The impairment of inward rectifying channel function, degree of hyperpolarization, and decrease of excitability were directly related to the Brunnstrom stages, which were more pronounced in lower stages. Conclusion: The lower motor neurons were affected …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
In the COVID-19 pandemic, which affects the whole world, healthcare professionals (HCP) are at high risk of transmission due to their direct contact with patients with COVID-19. Therefore, how to ensure the triage of the patient with acute respiratory symptoms should be determined in advance, the contact distance should be arranged to be at least 2 m, COVID-19 suspect or diagnosed patient should be instructed to wear a surgical mask. During the care of these patients, HCP should wear their personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with the procedure and should not neglect hand hygiene. The samples of the patient …

Understanding Dynamics Of Pandemics, Levent Akin, Mustafa Gökhan Gözel
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Along the centuries, novel strain of virus such as influenza produces pandemics which increase illness, death and disruption in the countries. Spanish flu in 1918, Asian flu in 1957, Hong Kong flu in 1968 and swine flu in 2009 were known pandemic which had various characteristics in terms of morbidity and mortality.
