Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of metabolic syndrome on spermatozoon morphology and histological, histochemical, histomorphometric changes in the testes. Twenty-four male Sprague Dawley rats (60 day-olds) were used for this purpose. The rats in the control group were fed only water and rat food, while the rats in the experimental group were fed with water containing 20% D-fructose and rats food for 16 weeks with ad libitum. At the end of the experimental period, the testes and epididymis of the rats were removed. The testes were embedded in paraffin by performing the necessary histological procedure. In …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of four different chilling periods, varying from 24 to 120 h, on the mean survival rate, larval and pupal development durations and the pupal and adult weight of Calliphora vicina (Robineau-Desvoidy) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) under laboratory conditions at 4 ºC in 2018 at Ondokuz Mayıs University. Chilling reduced the survival rate of the pupae of all developmental stages. The adult eclosion rate of first instar larvae and pupae was lower, especially after 72 and 120 h chilling periods, but it increased for the second instar, third instar and postfeeding larvae with …

A Standardised Analytical Framework For Sampling Fish Communities: Relevance Toturkish Riverine Ecosystems, Lorenzo Vilizzi, Ali̇ Serhan Tarkan, Baran Yoğurtçuoğlu

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Fish communities are important indicators of the health of riverine ecosystems. Fish monitoring for The Living Murray (TLM) initiative, one of Australia's most ambitious restoration undertakings for the degraded river-floodplain biota of the River Murray system (south-eastern Australia), was carried out annually from 2005 to 2011 across six 'Icon Sites', including the habitats and reaches therein. These spatial and temporal components of variation in fish community abundance and composition must be taken explicitly into account for consistent assessment of riverine ecosystem health. To address this requirement, a standardised analytical framework, consisting of a sampling design and appropriate statistical methods, is …

Reforming Cotton Genes: From Elucidation Of Dna Structure To Genome Editing, Muhammad Salman Mubarik, Sajid Majeed, Sultan Habibullah Khan, Xiongming Du, James E. Frelichowski, Lori Hinze, Muhammad Tehseen Azhar

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Cotton is an essential fiber producing crop in the world. It also supports additional industries by providing high quality oil and protein in the form of cottonseed cake. Currently, there is an urgent need to increase lint yield, fiber quality, and resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses due to rising pressure from a global population and possible supply shortages from the effects of erratic climate changes. Classic plant breeding and transgenic strategies need more genetic breakthroughs to support the increasing pressure for fiber quantity and quality. A potential for rapid increases in crop improvement is in various state-of-the-art gene editing …

Classical procedures for semen evaluation in breeding soundness examination require time and are costly. The evaluation techniques with CASA are limited due to the lack of standardization among laboratories and data analysis methods. Recent studies have contradictory conclusions on the actual predictive ability of this method alone regarding fertility. Finding a simple and objective test that can give the maximum correlation between in vitro and in vivo results has been the main focus of novel research. In this study, we aimed to develop a repeatable protocol of sperm adhesion test using oviductal explant (AOC) and the results were compared with …
