Emerging Technology’S Language Wars: Smart Contracts, Carla L. Reyes Jan 2022

Emerging Technology’S Language Wars: Smart Contracts, Carla L. Reyes

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

Work at the intersection of blockchain technology and law represents a highly interdisciplinary area of inquiry. Often, researchers, law-makers, lawyers, and other stakeholders unnecessarily debate issues because of linguistic misunderstandings. As the third of four studies examining the impact of clashes of linguistic meaning on law and policy around emerging technologies, this Essay uses smart contracts as a case study to demonstrate the real legal harm that arises from a failure to communicate. Specifically, this Essay uses techniques from corpus linguistics to reveal the inherent value conflicts embedded in definitional differences and debates as to whether the law should “accommodate” …

Preaching To The Converted: Religious Conversion In East Anglian Medieval Drama, Eleanor Davis Dec 2021

Preaching To The Converted: Religious Conversion In East Anglian Medieval Drama, Eleanor Davis

English Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation investigates religious conversion in late medieval East Anglian drama (c. 1400–1500). Each of my chapters examines a play with ties to fifteenth-century East Anglia, an economically prosperous region where orthodoxy and heterodoxy coexisted and religious drama flourished. All of the plays stage at least one miraculous conversion experience, yet the plays also offer reminders that conversion is an ongoing process that demands the convert’s continual effort to keep growing in faith. I demonstrate how these anonymous plays deliver their most important lessons about conversion in their much less miraculous moments, exposing a dramaturgy that revels in its ability …

Machine Learning Approach To Stability Analysis Of Semiconductor Memory Element, Ravindra Thanniru, Gautam Kapila, Nibhrat Lohia Dec 2021

Machine Learning Approach To Stability Analysis Of Semiconductor Memory Element, Ravindra Thanniru, Gautam Kapila, Nibhrat Lohia

SMU Data Science Review

Memory stability analysis traditionally relied heavily on circuit simulation-based approaches that run Monte Carlo (MC) analysis over various manufacturing and use condition parameters. This paper researches application of Machine Learning approaches for memory element failure analysis which could mimic simulation-like accuracy and minimize the need for engineers to rely heavily on simulators for their validations. Both regressor and classifier algorithms are benchmarked for accuracy and recall scores. A high recall score implies fewer escapes of fails to field and is the metric of choice for comparing algorithm. The paper identifies that recall score in excess of 0.97 can be achieved …

The Christian Right In Translation: Christian Conservative Discourse In Contemporary American Literature, Elizabeth Richardson Duke Dec 2021

The Christian Right In Translation: Christian Conservative Discourse In Contemporary American Literature, Elizabeth Richardson Duke

English Theses and Dissertations

Religion in contemporary American politics and religion in contemporary American Literature: are they independent phenomena? Literary scholars have largely assumed so. Scholars have attended to nontraditional, liberal religion in postwar American literature, while overlooking how this literature represents and critiques the rise of the Christian Right. Since white evangelical and fundamentalist Christians allied with the Republican party in the late 1970s, Christian conservatives have transformed American politics. As the GOP’s most influential interest group, the Christian Right has set the terms for many of the last four decades’ most contentious and consequential debates. Historians, political scientists, and contemporary American writers …

Deep In The Heart Of North America: Texas And The Future Of North American Energy Trade, Guillermo J. Garcia Sanchez, James W. Coleman Nov 2021

Deep In The Heart Of North America: Texas And The Future Of North American Energy Trade, Guillermo J. Garcia Sanchez, James W. Coleman

Mission Foods Texas-Mexico Center Research

Texas, the heart of North American energy markets, has recently emerged from history’s biggest oil boom, and is becoming the crossroads for an increasingly two-way trade in oil and gas. Texas and Mexico, in particular have much to gain from expanded energy trade. This report shows how energy law changes in the U.S. and Mexico present under-studied dangers to cross-border energy trade and will set an agenda for legal reform to enable mutually beneficial fuel and power trade.

From Critique To Audit: A Pragmatic Approach To The Climate Emergency, Jo Guldi Oct 2021

From Critique To Audit: A Pragmatic Approach To The Climate Emergency, Jo Guldi

History Faculty Publications

Rethinking the work of academics in a time of pressing deadlines for climate action, this paper offers a series of new pragmatic strategies that academics can take up. It suggests a "climate pledge" where university teachers promise 5% or more of their teaching time to link the field of their traditional research to climate issues. It suggests that humanists, social scientists and data scientists need not only to "critique" the logic of extraction that propels our climate catastrophe, but also to "audit" individual institutions, writers, and politicians for their continuing engagement with climate or lack thereof.

A "Second-Class Right" For "Second-Class Citizens", Benjamin A. Rice Oct 2021

A "Second-Class Right" For "Second-Class Citizens", Benjamin A. Rice

SMU Law Review Forum

In McDonald v. City of Chicago, the Supreme Court countenanced against treating the Second Amendment as a “second-class right.” Against this admonition, congressional defunding of federal restorative programs has rendered the amendment a second-class right for an ever-increasing and much-maligned group of people: those who have been adjudicated as mentally ill. In a majority of states, those who have been involuntarily committed at any point in their lives to a mental health institution lose the right to bear arms for life. Taking guns out of the hands of those who have enjoyed decades of good mental health after a brief …

How To Do Surgery On The Constitutional Law Of Libel, R. George Wright Oct 2021

How To Do Surgery On The Constitutional Law Of Libel, R. George Wright

SMU Law Review Forum

Of late, the constitutional law of libel has become the focus of increasing dissatisfaction. This dissatisfaction has taken various forms. The argument below, however, is that the most crucial defect of constitutional libel law lies in the Court’s continuing attempts to draw and utilize distinctions among public figure and private figure libel plaintiffs. The Court should abandon these attempts. Instead, the Court should attend, broadly and fundamentally, to the constitutionally vital distinction between libelous speech that does or does not address some matter of public interest and concern.

The argument below first emphasizes the constitutional logic underlying the Court’s initial …

Timescales And Dynamics Of Rhyolitic Melt Generation In Upper Crustal Magmatic Reservoirs: Insights From New Geochronologic And Petrologic Data On The Valle Mosso Pluton And Sesia Caldera, Sesia Magmatic System, Italy, Lorenzo Tavazzani Oct 2021

Timescales And Dynamics Of Rhyolitic Melt Generation In Upper Crustal Magmatic Reservoirs: Insights From New Geochronologic And Petrologic Data On The Valle Mosso Pluton And Sesia Caldera, Sesia Magmatic System, Italy, Lorenzo Tavazzani

Earth Sciences Theses and Dissertations

This work may have a narrow geographic focus, namely a handful of steep and densely forested valleys of the Southern Italian Alps, but its scientific goals are certainly wide. Through a combined analyses of the spatial distribution, geochemical characteristics and temporal duration of the Permian silicic magmatism in the renown Ivrea crustal section (Sesia Magmatic System), this dissertation addresses fundamental questions regarding the physical mechanisms of rhyolitic magma storage, mobilization and eruption.

A brief introduction serves to define the broader context of the scientific questions addressed in the three main chapters of this dissertation. Through Chapters 2 to 4 we …

Characterization Of Uav-Based Wireless Channels With Diverse Antenna Configurations, Mahmoud Badi Oct 2021

Characterization Of Uav-Based Wireless Channels With Diverse Antenna Configurations, Mahmoud Badi

Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations

In the next wave of swarm-based applications, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) need to communicate with peer drones in any direction of a three-dimensional (3D) space. On a given drone and across drones, various antenna positions and orientations are possible. We know that, in free space, high levels of signal loss are expected if the transmitting and receiving antennas are cross polarized. However, increasing the reflective and scattering objects in the channel between a transmitter and receiver can cause the received polarization to become completely independent from the transmitted polarization, making the cross-polarization of antennas insignificant. Usually, these effects are studied …

The Nonracist And Antiracist History Of Firearms Public Carry Regulation, Mark A. Frassetto Oct 2021

The Nonracist And Antiracist History Of Firearms Public Carry Regulation, Mark A. Frassetto

SMU Law Review Forum

This term, the Supreme Court will consider New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen, a Second Amendment challenge to New York State’s concealed carry weapon licensing system. Bruen is the first major Second Amendment case that the Court will decide on the merits in more than a decade. Briefing by the plaintiffs and gun rights scholars has in large part focused on arguments that laws regulating the carrying of guns in public, as well as gun regulation more generally, were historically intended to discriminate against minority groups. This argument is consistent with a broader effort in the conservative …

Ending Injustice: Solving The Initial Appearance Crisis, Pamela R. Metzger, Janet C. Hoeffel, Kristin Meeks, Sandra Sidi Sep 2021

Ending Injustice: Solving The Initial Appearance Crisis, Pamela R. Metzger, Janet C. Hoeffel, Kristin Meeks, Sandra Sidi

Deason Center Reports

Most Americans expect that if they are arrested, they will quickly appear before a judge, learn about the charges, and have an attorney assigned to defend them. The reality is vastly different. After arrest, a person can wait in jail for days, weeks, or even months before seeing a judge or meeting an attorney. This report chronicles the resulting initial appearance crisis and highlights its devastating consequences. More importantly, it provides policymakers and advocates with actionable recommendations.

Texas, Abortion, And State Action, Alexander J. Lindvall Sep 2021

Texas, Abortion, And State Action, Alexander J. Lindvall

SMU Law Review Forum

The Texas Legislature recently passed what the Supreme Court describes as an “unprecedented” statutory scheme. Texas’s new law allows private, everyday citizens to sue anyone who assists a woman in obtaining an abortion after her sixth week of pregnancy. It’s clear that Texas chose this unusual enforcement mechanism to try to circumvent the Constitution’s “state action” requirement. Before a plaintiff can challenge a policy or action on constitutional grounds, they must show that the government somehow had a hand in causing their harm. But this Texas law strips the government of its enforcement power and instead gives it to everyday …

Suing Texas State Senate Bill 8 Plaintiffs Under Federal Law For Violations Of Constitutional Rights, Anthony J. Colangelo Sep 2021

Suing Texas State Senate Bill 8 Plaintiffs Under Federal Law For Violations Of Constitutional Rights, Anthony J. Colangelo

SMU Law Review Forum

Many people are deriding (or celebrating) the exceptional—and exceptionally deceptive—device of the Texas legislature to so-called “deputize” private individuals as government enforcement agents to carry out a state anti-abortion law that, at present, violates the U.S. Constitution. The law at issue, commonly referred to as Senate Bill 8, is extraordinarily broad, and provides that anyone can sue anyone who “aids or abets” an abortion after about six weeks of pregnancy (including, if read literally, the Uber driver who drove the woman to the clinic). The law awards recovery of no less than $10,000 and makes no exceptions for pregnancies resulting …

Fast Multipole Methods For Wave And Charge Source Interactions In Layered Media And Deep Neural Network Algorithms For High-Dimensional Pdes, Wenzhong Zhang Aug 2021

Fast Multipole Methods For Wave And Charge Source Interactions In Layered Media And Deep Neural Network Algorithms For High-Dimensional Pdes, Wenzhong Zhang

Mathematics Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we develop fast algorithms for large scale numerical computations, including the fast multipole method (FMM) in layered media, and the forward-backward stochastic differential equation (FBSDE) based deep neural network (DNN) algorithms for high-dimensional parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs), addressing the issues of real-world challenging computational problems in various computation scenarios.

We develop the FMM in layered media, by first studying analytical and numerical properties of the Green's functions in layered media for the 2-D and 3-D Helmholtz equation, the linearized Poisson--Boltzmann equation, the Laplace's equation, and the tensor Green's functions for the time-harmonic Maxwell's equations and the …

Biochemical Evaluation Of Drug Inhibition Of Abc Transporters, Maisa Correa De Oliveira Aug 2021

Biochemical Evaluation Of Drug Inhibition Of Abc Transporters, Maisa Correa De Oliveira

Biological Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Multidrug resistant (MDR) cancers often become resistant to pharmacologically and structurally diverse drugs by overexpressing members of the family of ATP Binding Cassette (ABC) transporters. These membrane pumps protect normal cells by actively exporting a large range of toxins out of the cells. Classic MDR is often correlated with the overexpression of three well-studied mammalian ABC transporters: P-glycoprotein (P-gp), Breast Cancer Resistant Protein (BCRP), and Multidrug Resistant Protein 1 (MRP1).

P-gp is the most studied ABC transporter, and the search for P-gp inhibitors as co-therapeutics to combat MDR has had little success after decades of studies. We previously used high-throughput …

A Restrained Beam Sub-Model Assembly (Rbsa) For Progressive Collapse Analysis, Muath Alhumaidi Aug 2021

A Restrained Beam Sub-Model Assembly (Rbsa) For Progressive Collapse Analysis, Muath Alhumaidi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Theses and Dissertations

The progressive collapse failure mode occurs in buildings when a load-carrying element is lost due to extreme events such as explosions caused by terrorist attacks or vehicular impacts. Guidelines and many researches efforts have been established in order to limit and prevent total collapse of buildings after losing a load-carrying component (e.g., a column). Two famous examples of progressive collapse are the 1968 Ronan Point apartment building kitchen explosion on the 18th floor and the 1995 Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building bombing in Oklahoma City. Both examples resulted in fatalities and injuries. A small number of these …
