The Death Of State Sovereignty? An Empirical Exploration, Dawn L. Rothe, Christopher W. Mullins
The Death Of State Sovereignty? An Empirical Exploration, Dawn L. Rothe, Christopher W. Mullins
Articles
As academics have become increasingly interested in globalization, scholars in many fields have turned their attention to theorizations of the state and state power. Admittedly, most criminologists have paid relatively attention to theories of the state, its function, role, or issues of sovereignty (save for Barak, 1991; Chambliss and Zatz, 1993; Friedrichs, 1992; Michalowski and Kramer, 1987; Mullins and Rothe, 2008; Rothe and Mullins, 2006, 2007, 2008). With the growing criminological interest in and focus on transnational crimes (Friedrichs, 2007), crimes of globalization (Friedrichs and Friedrichs, 2002; Rothe, Mullins, and Muzzatti, 2006; Rothe, Mullins and Sandstrom, 2008), and crime of …

“We Are Going To Rape You And Taste Tutsi Women”: Rape During The 1994 Rwandan Genocide, Christopher W. Mullins
Articles
Over the past decades, scholars have paid greater attention to sexual violence, in both theorization and empirical analysis. One area which has been largely ignored, however, is the sexual violence during times of armed conflict. This paper examines the nature and dynamics of sexual violence as it occurred during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Drawing upon testimonies given to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), descriptions of rapes--both singular and mass—were qualitatively analyzed. In general, three broad types of assaults were identified: opportunistic, assaults which seemed to be a product of the disorder inherent within the conflict; episodes of sexual …

Resisting Anti-Intellectualism And Promoting Legal Literacy, Leonard J. Long
Resisting Anti-Intellectualism And Promoting Legal Literacy, Leonard J. Long
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Professor Long urges everyone involved in legal education, including professors, lawyers, students, and judges, to ask just one question: Of what use is a law school education? Those involved with law school educations should strive to be intellectually curious and well-rounded in education, and not to maintain the narrow view of simply “training lawyers.” For the benefit of society, consumers of legal services, lawyers, and law firms, we must encourage the pursuit of legal literacy. Law students should be encouraged to explore American literature and traditions of Anglo-American law to facilitate their legal literacy and to become cultural elitists. Students …

A Self-Organizing Map And Its Modeling For Discovering Malignant Network Traffic, Chet Langin, Hongbo Zhou, Shahram Rahimi, Bidyut Gupta, Mehdi Zargham, Mohammad R. Sayeh
A Self-Organizing Map And Its Modeling For Discovering Malignant Network Traffic, Chet Langin, Hongbo Zhou, Shahram Rahimi, Bidyut Gupta, Mehdi Zargham, Mohammad R. Sayeh
Computer Science Publications
Model-based intrusion detection and knowledge discovery are combined to cluster and classify P2P botnet traffic and other malignant network activity by using a Self-Organizing Map (SOM) self-trained on denied Internet firewall log entries. The SOM analyzed new firewall log entries in a case study to classify similar network activity, and discovered previously unknown local P2P bot traffic and other security issues.

“He Would Kill Me With His Penis”: Genocidal Rape In Rwanda As A State Crime, Christopher W. Mullins
“He Would Kill Me With His Penis”: Genocidal Rape In Rwanda As A State Crime, Christopher W. Mullins
Articles
Only recently have critical criminologists begun a systematic exploration of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity as state crimes (Kramer and Michalowski 2005; Mullins and Rothe 2008; Haveman and Smeulers 2008). This paper contributes to that growing literature through examining the nature and dynamics of sexual violence as it occurred during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. It draws upon empirical examination of events depicted in transcripts of trials held before the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. It qualitatively examines the role of leaders in producing mass sexual assaults. It explores how sexual mutilations were more intense expressions of what the …
A Model To Use Denied Internet Traffic To Indirectly Discover Internal Network Security Problems, Chet Langin, Hongbo Zhou, Shahram Rahimi
A Model To Use Denied Internet Traffic To Indirectly Discover Internal Network Security Problems, Chet Langin, Hongbo Zhou, Shahram Rahimi
Computer Science Publications
We propose a model for using firewall log entries of denied inbound Internet traffic for indirect discovery of local IP addresses that have security problems. This method is used successfully to discover two computers on the network of Southern Illinois University which were infected with malicious feral software, as well as two more IP addresses on the university network with other security problems.

The Relationship Between Resources And Conflict: A Synthesis, Zsolt Becsi, Sajal Lahiri
The Relationship Between Resources And Conflict: A Synthesis, Zsolt Becsi, Sajal Lahiri
Economics Discussion Papers
The question over whether resource abundance or scarcity is an important cause of conflict has been a lively area of research. We examine this question in a simple trade-theoretic model where two regions are in conflict and where war equilibrium is determined endogenously. We find that while abundance of uncontested natural resources discourages conflict (the Malthusian view), abundance of contested natural resources encourages conflict. We also show that when the warring regions have influence over the terms of trade and take this influence into account when deciding war efforts, the effect of endowments on conflict may be strengthened or weakened …
