Developing T-Shaped Water Professionals: Building Capacity In Collaboration, Learning, And Leadership To Drive Innovation, Brian S. Mcintosh, Andre Taylor
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
As we progress into the 21 st century, change is an increasingly central theme for water professionals and for professionals in sectors where water plays a central role. Building the capacity of professionals in water and closely related sectors to lead such change will be an essential component of the response to global water challenges this century. This paper provides a contribution by critically developing a concept, the T-shaped water professional, as a framework for the design of curricula for educational programs to build the capacity of water professionals to stimulate and drive processes of innovation and change. The T-shaped …

Family And Consumer Sciences Teacher Educator's Perception Of Integration Of Reading Skill Instruction, Frederick Polkinghorne, Sally E. Arnett-Hartwick
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine family and consumer sciences (FACS) teacher educators’ perceptions on the integration of reading skill instruction in secondary FACS courses. Background: As a result of low national reading scores and legislation, family and consumer sciences (FACS) teachers are being challenged to explicitly teach reading into course curricula but feel untrained to do so. Therefore, this demonstrates that FACS teachers know the value of literacy integration, but lack pedagogical skills too successfully and explicitly integrate literacy in the FACS curriculum. This draws attention to the preparation of FACS teachers, moreover FACS teacher educators’ …

Objective: Creating training guides for social service workers to deliver more effective services for veterans with post-traumatic stress syndrome. Background: Effective service delivery for veterans with post-traumatic stress syndrome is often hampered by a lack of knowledge about how to identify the signs and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Appropriate training guides can provide integral benefits including: improved situational awareness, more accurate data gathered in the intake process, a reduction in veteran homelessness and prevention of chronic homelessness. Method: A pre-and post-test design was used to determine levels of knowledge guided by Bloom’s Taxonomy (1956). The study focused on …

New Learning Foundations For Building Water Knowledge Bridges, Jeff Camkin, Susana Neto
New Learning Foundations For Building Water Knowledge Bridges, Jeff Camkin, Susana Neto
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Five regional meetings promoted by UNESCO in 2009 addressed the growing need for transdisciplinary approaches, holistic vision, incorporation of non-formal knowledge and views, effective participation and bottom-up action for identification of water problems and solutions. There is, however, a general context of tension and competition between specializations within different disciplines, and without specialization it is difficult to obtain formal and academic recognition. This paper presents insights into new co-learning methodologies centred in the experience of participants, inspired by and adapting the pedagogic approach developed by Paulo Freire, to the context of water management educational needs. This innovative approach has been …

Between them, the authors of this paper have over sixty years experience in water education working in primary and secondary schools, universities, field study centres, professional development programs; and with community, industry, and government groups, focusing on coastal zones and catchments. Over the last three years, they have undertaken a systematic process of personal and dialogic reflection and deliberation on this experience, particularly in the area of popular education. This paper presents three key water education lessons gained from this iterative process and provides examples to justify the sagacity of this choice. First and foremost, popular water educators really need …

This article analyzes the process and output of a cross-boundary peer learning exercise about policy and implementation on natural resource management in the Mekong. The exercise involved university students and academics from Cambodia, China, Thailand, and Australia. The pedagogic approach taken was student-centred learning, whereby students learned with and from their fellow students, and about their peers' perspectives in other Mekong countries on similar issues. The article consists of four parts. The first part introduces the exercise and discusses conceptual frameworks including cross-cultural learning, peer-based learning, and experiential learning. The second part describes the Mekong Learning Initiative research exchange program, …

In a sample of individuals with childhood focal epilepsy, children/adolescents with left hemisphere foci outperformed those with right foci on both measures of nonverbal learning. Participants with left foci performed worse than controls on paired associate delayed recall and semantic memory, and they had greater laterality effects in IQ. Participants with right foci performed worse than controls on delayed facial recognition. Both groups displayed reduced focused attention and poor passage retention over time. Although participants with bilateral foci displayed poor learning and lower IQ than controls, they did not have worse impairment than those with a unilateral focus.

"We Are Pioneers": Polyamorists' Stigma Management Strategies, Jessica M. Young
"We Are Pioneers": Polyamorists' Stigma Management Strategies, Jessica M. Young
Research Papers
Despite a shift in our late-modern period to erode more traditional forms of relationships and a growth in polyamory’s popularity, non-monogamy remains highly stigmatized. Polyamory is a relationship style wherein participants have multiple romantic and/or sexual partners with whom they focus on building commitments, sharing intimacy, and establishing honesty (Sheff 2006). While scholarship on polyamory and the stigma of non-monogamies generally is growing, little is known about how polyamorists manage their stigmatized identities. Using Goffman’s (1963) theory of stigma management, I inductively analyze discussion board posts on a polyamorous community’s website and find that polyamorists manage their stigma differently in …

In this project, I’ve researched the impact of M-Health among smartphone use in today’s society. Smartphone habits have been researched as well as what type of health care information college aged students are seeking out. This research, including a survey of uses and perceptions of mobile apps and interests in healthcare topics, will help with the creation of a university health center mobile app. This app will fulfill the needs of the students and the university while creating a healthier campus environment.
The Effects Of Early Intervention On Parent-Premature Infant Interaction, Ashley S. Kipp
The Effects Of Early Intervention On Parent-Premature Infant Interaction, Ashley S. Kipp
Research Papers
Early intervention focusing on the interaction between premature infants and their parents as an attempt to increase their developmental outcomes has been evaluated in a number of studies. This paper will review the literature about the effects of early intervention on parent-infant interaction, specifically focusing on premature infants. This topic is being studied because the efficacy of how interaction affects the development of parent-infant interaction for premature infants and their parents needs to be determined. This will help researchers and parents develop successful methods to lessen the difficulty of interaction between parents and their premature infants. By providing such evidence, …

Cultural Competency In Law Enforcement: Assessing Cultural Competence Levels Among College Campus Police Departments, Michelle N. Fletcher
Research Papers
The cultural competence levels present in public organizations and agencies are a significant part of serving citizen populations. This area of research has yet to receive adequate attention from professional and academic disciplines like public administration, and law enforcement. This study investigates the existing research in the area of cultural competence and public service. In an effort to determine how culturally competent policies can improve service delivery among law enforcement professionals; three college campus police departments participated in cultural competence assessments. Based on the results of these findings recommendations were developed to guide college campus police departments toward improved cultural …

A Systematic Exploration Of Different Stimulus Combinations Using The Implicit Relational Assessement Procedure, Kail H. Seymour
A Systematic Exploration Of Different Stimulus Combinations Using The Implicit Relational Assessement Procedure, Kail H. Seymour
Research Papers
The Implicit Associations Test (IAT) and the Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure (IRAP) recently have been used to examine implicit attitudes (i.e., implicit bias). Although both methods attempt to assess implicit attitudes about two categorical stimuli (e.g., Black people and White people), the IRAP assesses attitudes toward each stimulus separately. Conversely, IAT procedures inherently produce a comparison between the two attitudes in an “oppositional” fashion (e.g., a pro-Black people:anti-White people attitude or a pro-White people:anti-Black people attitude). As IRAP data have demonstrated non-oppositional relationships for such attitudes (e.g., co-occurring pro-Black people and pro-White people attitudes), alternative experimental stimulus pairings may produce …
Machiavellianism In Healthcare Explored: Differences In Aspiring Managers And Patient Care Professionals, Sandra Collins
Machiavellianism In Healthcare Explored: Differences In Aspiring Managers And Patient Care Professionals, Sandra Collins
Articles
Complex economic factors require healthcare professionals to have multiple skills. Although controversial, some characteristics associated with Machiavellianism may be needed in order to maintain organizational solvency. A study was conducted to determine the differences between aspiring healthcare managers and patient care professionals regarding the Machiavellian tendencies. The results of the study indicate a significant mix of Machiavellian traits exist within both groups which need to be both cultivated and controlled. Efforts should be made to increase some Machiavellian tendencies such as risk-risk taking and creative while extinguishing counterproductive traits that lead to unethical decision making.
