Comparing The Efficacy Of Voice Restoration Speaking Options Following Laryngectomy, Elizabeth K. Kerkhoff
Research Papers
The objective of this research paper is to identify the efficacy of speech rehabilitation options after total laryngectomy by comparing the currently available alaryngeal speaking techniques, with increased focus on tracheoesophageal puncture. It will begin by supplementing readers with information regarding normal anatomy and physiology required for speech production, types of laryngeal cancers, anatomical changes resulting from laryngeal cancers, and treatment options that can be implemented in order to help preserve the ability to speak. Next, there will be descriptions of the current available alaryngeal speaking options for laryngectomized patients. The advantages and disadvantages of these options will be compared …

Retrospective Evaluation Of Factors That Influence The Implementation Of C.A.T.C.H. In Southern Illinois Schools, Matthew Ryan Bice
Dissertations
This study is a retrospective evaluation of the Coordinated Approach To Child Health (CATCH) coordinated school health program. An abundant amount of research has been conducted concerning CATCH, but no data exist that represents the characteristics and attitudes of individuals implementing the program. This study looked to examine organizational readiness, commitment to change, leadership, implementation barriers, innovation perceptions and their influence on the diffusion of CATCH. The primary purpose of this study is to describe and explain why schools in the same area that receive the same CATCH training result in different implementation practices. This study included a retrospective evaluation …
The Influence Of Social Class On Academic Outcomes: A Structural Equation Model Examining The Relationships Between Student Dependency Style, Student-Academic Environment Fit, And Satisfaction On Academic Outcomes, Dustin Ryan Nadler
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between college students' social class and their academic outcomes. A structural equation model was proposed, hypothesizing that a student's socioeconomic status (SES) is related to their motives for attending college, thus influencing their perception of fit at the university, their satisfaction with the university, their academic self-efficacy, and their grades, attendance, and likelihood for retention.. The results from a sample of 500 undergraduate students show that overall, the hypothesized model was a borderline good fit of the data. While SES was negatively related to interdependent motives for attending college, it …

Alcoholism On The American Stage: De-Stigmatizing Socially Constructed Depictions Of The Alcoholic Through Performance, Thomas Michael Campbell
Alcoholism On The American Stage: De-Stigmatizing Socially Constructed Depictions Of The Alcoholic Through Performance, Thomas Michael Campbell
Dissertations
This dissertation seeks to address the societal problems associated with alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency in relationship to problematic depictions that have appeared on the American stage. It examines plays that perpetuate stigmas as well as plays that seek to subvert stigmas and stereotypical depictions as a means of creating avenues for discourse. This study asks how we, as practitioners of the theatre, can use the theatre and the act of storytelling to initiate empathy and compassion toward what is still considered a marginalized topic of discussion. Cultural misconceptions regarding the development of and (mis)understandings of alcohol abuse/dependency are perpetuated …
Scheler's Phenomenological Ontology Of Value: Implications And Reflections For Ethical Theory, James Edward Hackett
Scheler's Phenomenological Ontology Of Value: Implications And Reflections For Ethical Theory, James Edward Hackett
Dissertations
AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION OF J. Edward Hackett, for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Philosophy, presented on December 6, 2012 at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: Scheler's Phenomenological Ontology of Value: Implications and Reflections for Ethical Theory MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Kenneth W. Stikkers My dissertation provides the first comprehensive account of what values are in Max Scheler's Formalism in Ethics (Formalism hereafter). As a phenomenologist, Scheler did not attempt to invent a new ontological language to describe value experience clearly as Heidegger invented for his fundamental ontology of Dasein. In so doing, Scheler's phenomenological descriptions often use metaphysically …
The Effect Of Injury Severity On Behavioral Tasks Used For The Assessment Of Cognitive Functioning Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Kris M. Martens
The Effect Of Injury Severity On Behavioral Tasks Used For The Assessment Of Cognitive Functioning Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Kris M. Martens
Dissertations
Cognitive impairment is the most frequent cause of disability in humans following traumatic brain injury (TBI), yet the behavioral tasks used to assess cognitive behavior in rodent models of brain injury are underrepresented in the field. Additionally, few of these tasks have been used to assess behavior across degrees of injury severity. The goal of the present study was to compare four behavioral tasks commonly used in the field in frontally-injured rats with both mild and moderate-to-severe brain injuries. At the start of the study, rats were assigned to two of the following behavioral tasks: Dig scent discrimination (Dig) task, …
The Impact Of Daycare And Child Temperament On Parent-Child Interactions, Kyle Bersted
The Impact Of Daycare And Child Temperament On Parent-Child Interactions, Kyle Bersted
Theses
This study explored the potential impact of child temperament and daycare on behavior problems and parental sensitivity. It was expected that children with more "difficult" temperaments would exhibit more behavior problems and have less sensitive parents when experiencing high amounts of daycare. Measures from 60 families involved in the Southern Illinois Twins and Siblings Study (SITSS) were examined. Results indicated that highly active children exhibited more externalizing behaviors when experiencing less daycare. Shy children experiencing more daycare had more sensitive parents. Additionally, a temperamental difference between co-twins was related to differential parental sensitivity. Lastly, DZ co-twins were more temperamentally different …
"Because I Like It? No, They Made Me Do It!!" Why Juveniles Engage In Sexting, Jennifer Ann Haegele
"Because I Like It? No, They Made Me Do It!!" Why Juveniles Engage In Sexting, Jennifer Ann Haegele
Theses
Developments in technology have changed the way we do everything; advanced our research capabilities, enhanced our communication abilities and speeds, even the way people commit crimes. It provides perpetrators with a new way to commit traditional crimes as well as new forms of crime. One of the many opportunities involved with increased communication devices is known as sexting. Adolescent sexting has received national and local attention due to possible long-term implications such as registering as a sex offender and even suicide. Sexting, which is considered an antisocial behavior among adolescents, has progressively become implicated in peer pressure as well. Peer …
Deviant Peers, Opportunity, And Cyberbullying: A Theoretical Examination Of A New Deviance, Charern Lee
Deviant Peers, Opportunity, And Cyberbullying: A Theoretical Examination Of A New Deviance, Charern Lee
Theses
Scholars of cybercrime have used social learning theory (SLT) and routine activities theory (RAT) to explain the variation in offending and victimization; however, to date, only RAT has been used to explain the specific behavior of cyberbullying. Therefore, this study combines SLT and RAT concepts to explain the cyberbullying phenomenon. Today's adolescents are exposed early to cyberspace and this has given them more opportunities to bully their peers, especially in an environment that is difficult to monitor by adults. The results from this study of a sample of Southeastern middle and high school students suggest that the opportunity component of …
The Effect Of Condtional Discrimination Training On Choice Making In Children During `Pre-Gambling' Activities, Leigha S. Shoup
The Effect Of Condtional Discrimination Training On Choice Making In Children During `Pre-Gambling' Activities, Leigha S. Shoup
Theses
Past research has shown conditional discrimination training of a stimulus to change its function by manipulating variables within the contingencies (e.g., Johnson & Dixon, 2009), and the present study attempted to extend this research. Experimenters exposed 3 children (ages 6-9 years) to a computer program that trained participant to discriminate between two contextual cures (blue and yellow) representing more than and less than. All three participants will demonstrate an increased preference toward the color that had been paired with more than during both conditional discrimination training phases.

Who Says I Should Leave? Factors Determining The Decision To Leave Home During Disasters, Vondragas J. Smalley
Who Says I Should Leave? Factors Determining The Decision To Leave Home During Disasters, Vondragas J. Smalley
Honors Theses
In an effort to minimize casualties during natural catastrophes, specifically hurricanes, researchers have found that risk perception, socioeconomic status, and past evacuation experience are important determinants in evacuation behavior. This study argues that these factors as well as race are important determinants in the decision of individuals to evacuate in the face of natural disasters. My investigation employs chi-square analysis and cross tabulation to determine the importance of these factors. The findings indicate that these hypotheses may impact the decision of residents to evacuate in the face of natural disasters and warrant further study by those doing evacuation behavior research.

Is There The Threat Of Dutch Disease In The United States? A Look At The Impacts Of Natural Resource Exports On The Number Of Domestic Manufacturing Jobs, Andrew M. Miskell
Research Papers
This paper intends on investigating the potential relationship that exists between the number of manufacturing jobs in the United States and the exportation of natural resources. It will stress how the increase seen in the exporting of America’s natural resources over a thirty-three year period from 1980 to 2012, has coincided with significant job loss in the manufacturing sector. Specifically, this paper will show through a cross-sectional analysis of the United States that there has been a negative, linear, and significant relationship between these items of interest.

The highly addictive drug methamphetamine has been associated with impairments in social and neurological functioning. With assistance from previous studies on methamphetamine use and HIV, the theory that the risk of HIV is increased with the use of methamphetamine will be supported. The purpose of this paper is to educate and illustrate the dangerous effects of methamphetamine use among individuals with HIV. The paper will conclude with an examination of possible HIV treatment and prevention options to better assist individuals who use methamphetamine.
