Drought, Climate Change, And Colorado's Policy Discussion: Participation Or Procrastination?, John D. Wiener
2007
Water, drought and even climate change policy problems are attracting increasing attention, but actual response is not as clear. This presentation describes unease over the pace of discussion about rules of the game while play proceeds.

Genetic Structure Of American Black Bears In The Desert Southwest Of North America, Dave P. Onorato, Eric C. Hellgren, Ronald A. Van Den Bussche, Diana L. Doan-Crider, J Raymond Skiles, Jr.

Abstract American black bears (Ursus americanus) have recolonized parts of their former range in the Trans-Pecos region of western Texas after a >40-year absence. Assessment of genetic variation, structuring, gene flow, and dispersal among bear populations along the borderlands of Mexico and Texas is important to gain a better understanding of recolonization by large carnivores. We evaluated aspects of genetic diversity and gene flow for 6 sampling areas of black bears in southwestern North America using genotypic data from 7 microsatellite loci. Our results indicated that genetic diversity generally was high in the metapopulation of black bears in …

Numerical Computing And Graphics For The Power Method Transformation Using Mathematica, Todd C. Headrick, Yanyan Sheng, Flaviu-Adrian Hodis
Numerical Computing And Graphics For The Power Method Transformation Using Mathematica, Todd C. Headrick, Yanyan Sheng, Flaviu-Adrian Hodis
Publications
This paper provides the requisite information and description of software that perform numerical computations and graphics for the power method polynomial transformation. The software developed is written in the Mathematica 5.2 package PowerMethod.m and is associated with fifth-order polynomials that are used for simulating univariate and multivariate non-normal distributions. The package is flexible enough to allow a user the choice to model theoretical pdfs, empirical data, or a user's own selected distribution(s). The primary functions perform the following (a) compute standardized cumulants and polynomial coefficients, (b) ensure that polynomial transformations yield valid pdfs, and (c) graph power method pdfs and …

Does Wealth Imply Secularization And Longevity?, Zsolt Becsi
Does Wealth Imply Secularization And Longevity?, Zsolt Becsi
Economics Discussion Papers
We develop a simple life cycle model with endogenous longevity where religious firms influence religious beliefs using donations as an input. The model suggests that either wealth and economic development or competition by religious firms can explain cross-country variation in religious beliefs, but to explain cross-country variation in religious beliefs, longevity, and consumption both development and competition are required. Our results depend on the wealth and substitution effects that accompany economic development and religious market competition.

Considerable attention has been paid in the CA literature to the glossing practices through which participants in conversation formulate who they are, what they are talking about, where the things they are talking about are located, and so forth. There are, of course, gestural glossing practices as well. For any concept or category presented gesturally, however, there is a range of possibilities from which a particular formulation may be adopted on any actual occasion of use. Identifying alternative formulations serves as a useful analytic exercise for exploring the pragmatic consequences of a produced gesture. In our own research, we have …
A Framework To Assess State Support Of Certified Organic Farming, Shauna M. Bloom, Leslie Duram
A Framework To Assess State Support Of Certified Organic Farming, Shauna M. Bloom, Leslie Duram
Publications
Support for organic farming varies from state to state, and there have been few attempts to document what types of support currently exists. This research assesses regionally specific and relevant support available to organic farmers at the state level. This exploratory study develops a framework of ten key categories of organic agricultural support: leadership, policy, research, technical support, financial support, marketing and promotion, education and information, consumer issues, inter-agency activities, and future developments. Data from state departments of agriculture, land grant universities, extension services, and other state-level agencies provide the basis for a numerical assessment of support in each category. …
