Recognizing The Impact Of Personal And Environmental Influences On Type 2 Diabetes Management, Johna S. Brown
Research Papers
Globalization has drastically altered the way humans function. Modern ways of life have induced obesity and type 2 diabetes upsurges on a global level. Type 2 diabetes is a complex chronic illness that can be extremely difficult to prevent and manage. It requires strict consistency in terms of energy consumption, self-assessment, and physical activity. A wide array of variables impact human behavior and one’s ability to abide by such strict regimens. These variables can often be categorized as environmental or personal influences. Comprehensive understanding of these variables can provide insight to diabetics and health professions regarding barriers to diabetes management …

Examining The Relationship Between Supervisory Styles And Counselor Skill And Personal Development Perceived By The Supervisee, Bruce Michael Meissner
Dissertations
This study replicates the Fernando and Hulse-Killacky (2005) study of supervisory styles and self-efficacy perceived by the supervisee. The Fernando and Hulse-Killacky study assessed general counseling students from Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educa¬tional Programs (CACREP) using the Supervisory Styles Inventory (SSI; Friedlander & Ward, 1984) with a measure of self-efficacy, the Counseling Self-Estimate Inventory (COSE; Larson, Suzuki, Gillespie, Potenza, Bechtel, & Toulouse, 1992). The present study used the SSI with a population of rehabilitation practicum counseling students from Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE) accredited master level rehabilitation counseling training (RCT) programs to assess the relationship between supervisory …

Co-Occurring Mental Health And Substance Use Disorders: A Review Of Issues And Clinical Approaches For Dual Diagnosis, Jacob Aaron Weatherford
Research Papers
Individuals with co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorder (SUD) encounter a number of challenges that significantly diminish their quality of life. As compared to persons with either a mental illness or SUD alone, those with co-occurring disorders often have significantly more impairment in functioning, more severe symptoms, and are at an increased risk of health problems, hospitalization, incarceration, and suicide, amongst other negative consequences. Furthermore, those with co-occurring disorders are often more difficult to engage and retain in treatment, and have a worse prognosis than those with a single disorder. Treatment facilities are often not equipped with adequate assessment …
Factors Influencing Post-Acute Brain Injury Rehabilitation Treatment Outcome, Nicholas Joseph Cioe
Factors Influencing Post-Acute Brain Injury Rehabilitation Treatment Outcome, Nicholas Joseph Cioe
Dissertations
Brain injury has a tremendous effect on the United States. The medical system has a continuum of care available but many of these services are extremely expensive. Despite the effectiveness of residential post-acute brain injury rehabilitation (PABIR) resistance to provide adequate funding remains because of a dearth of randomized controlled trial (RCT) studies demonstrating effectiveness. Some research suggests observational trials are typically more representative of community samples and yield conclusions similar to RCT studies. This study uses a large multi-state naturalistic community-based sample of individuals who received residential PABIR. The purposes of this study were to (1) use logistic regression …
The Effects Of An Educational Intervention On The Aging Knowlege Of Graduate Counseling Students, Damien Gent Dotson
The Effects Of An Educational Intervention On The Aging Knowlege Of Graduate Counseling Students, Damien Gent Dotson
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to test the effects of an educational intervention on the aging knowledge of graduate counseling students. Overcoming misconceptions, such as positive and negative stereotypes about older adults, is essential for graduate counseling students to be effectively trained to work with the aging population. Educational interventions have been found to be the most consistently effective way of increasing aging knowledge and helping individuals overcome ageist beliefs rooted in faulty aging knowledge. For this study, it was hypothesized that a comprehensive educational intervention (approximately 2 hours in duration) would increase overall aging knowledge, increase aging and …
Treatment For Persons With Heroin Addiction, Angie K. Mcduffie
Treatment For Persons With Heroin Addiction, Angie K. Mcduffie
Research Papers
Heroin addiction is devastating to both the person addicted and to society. Attempts to treat heroin addiction have proved difficult due to the extreme addictive qualities of the drug. Medication-assisted recovery or pharmacotherapy, such as methadone and buprenorphine, are controversial in that it is providing a medication that has similar qualities of heroin itself. Behavioral treatments alone have limited success due to many factors. The literature presented will provide a look at heroin and heroin addiction, as well as a comprehensive study of outpatient treatments that are currently being used. The purpose of this study is to determine the most …

Identifying Competencies Of Aoda Clinical Supervisors For Integration Into Rehabilitation Counselor Training Curriculum: A Delphi Study, Marissa Mckee
Dissertations
This study preliminarily identified clinical supervision competencies needed for alcohol and other drug abuse (AODA) clinical supervisors for integration into rehabilitation counselor training (RCT) curriculum. The Delphi method via LimeSurvey® was utilized to identify competencies specific to AODA clinical supervision. A panel of six experts in RCT and AODA clinical supervision completed five rounds of data collection beginning with an open-ended question. Consensus and stability of responses were calculated following Rounds 2-5 of data collection. Panelist fatigue resulted in data collection being discontinued after Round 5, prior to a consensus or stability of responses being reached. A total of 115 …
The Need For Specialized Programs For Lgbt Individuals In Substance Abuse Treatment, Erin E. Mooney
The Need For Specialized Programs For Lgbt Individuals In Substance Abuse Treatment, Erin E. Mooney
Research Papers
Specialized substance abuse treatment programs for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals are limited. Specialized treatment programs offer unique and tailored services to ‘special populations’ in order to provide effective treatment. The services offered in these programs are proven to be especially helpful and effective for LGBT individuals. Many researchers have suggested that LGBT-Specific substance abuse programs have better treatment outcomes for LGBT individuals than mainstream treatment programs. LGBT individuals have been said to have much higher rates of substance abuse than their heterosexual counterparts. They also face discrimination, prejudice, negative attitudes and behavior, and unique life experiences that …

Screening For Alcohol And Drug Use Among Persons With Disabilities, Matthew E. Sprong
Research Papers
People with disabilities experience many barriers when attempting to gain employment. Substance Use Disorders (SUDS) is one particular challenge that has been identified in this research paper. Individuals with SUDS experience an increase in unsucessful case closures in state funded vocational rehabilitation agencies. Screening for SUDS has been overlooked in many agencies and his paper intends to identify barriers of a screening protocal in state VR and provide recommendations for subcontracted-state comprehensive vocational evaluation programs to contribute to screening for SUDS.
The Importance Of Early Counseling And Education Of Persons Diagnosed With Alzheimer's Disease And Their Caregivers, Haley Pottorff Basnett
The Importance Of Early Counseling And Education Of Persons Diagnosed With Alzheimer's Disease And Their Caregivers, Haley Pottorff Basnett
Research Papers
When people are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, they go through periods of depression simply because the prognosis is eventual and certain death. By the same token, many healthcare professionals and insurance companies with whom individuals and their families must deal take an often cold approach to the diagnosis, considering counseling as a waste of time for a situation in which a physical prognosis is hopeless. In treating the physical aspect of the disease, many doctors do in fact prescribe an antidepressant, which ironically, will exacerbate the physical condition of the person affected, hastening the physical decline. Therefore, while the ultimate tragedy …

Human services work entails providing services to others. Services are personalized to meet the needs and desires of the recipient. Providers may encounter a range of emotions, not only their own but those of the service recipient and other interested parties. Combined with increased workloads, fewer resources, and outside pressures, employees can experience job stress or burnout. This work explores the nature of human services work and burnout and provides recommendations for further examination to aid in retaining service providers, thereby preserving continuity and quality of services.

Employment And Disability: Debugging The Myth Of Employment And Loss Of Benefits., Matthew Fred
Employment And Disability: Debugging The Myth Of Employment And Loss Of Benefits., Matthew Fred
Research Papers
In the United States those with disabilities have few options for support outside of family and friends. For most persons with disabilities this support comes in the form of either Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) provided through the Social Security Administration (SSA). Throughout the years qualifying for these benefits has become a labor intensive process. During this process a person must demonstrate an inability to work under a definition that nearly requires a complete incapacity of the individual. This difficulty in qualifying has resulted in a long held belief among recipients that if one returns …
