The Lack Of Public Policies Implemented In Illinois’ Special Education Certification Requirements That Directly Involve Educating Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Michelle Thies
Research Papers
With the growing number of children being diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), attention must be paid to the educational instruction and educational setting these children are being provided. By looking at the special education certification requirements in addition to the general education requirements, it will help to show where public policies are falling short when educating this population of students. This paper attempts to answer these questions: Are there specific certification requirements in Illinois for special education teachers to teach students who have autism spectrum disorders (ASD)? If so, are these requirements being implemented in the classroom? If there …
Markerless Facial Motion Capture, Sara J. Saito
Markerless Facial Motion Capture, Sara J. Saito
Research Papers
With the ever-rising capabilities of motion capture systems; this project explored markerless facial motion capture programs using the Kinect Sensor for Xbox. Many systems today still use markers and end up retargeting after a motion capture recording. This project used a simpler process of setting up and being able to display the effects live. An off-the-shelf system was built using a computer, a Kinect Sensor, a plug-in from Brekel, and Autodesk software. The first goal was to create a process that was able to capture and project live facial motion for fewer than $500 USD. Anything over $500 USD was …

Context-Specific Close-Range “Hoo” Calls In Wild Gibbons (Hylobates Lar), Esther Clarke, Ulrich H. Reichard, Klaus Zuberbühler
Publications
Background
Close range calls are produced by many animals during intra-specific interactions, such as during home range defence, playing, begging for food, and directing others. In this study, we investigated the most common close range vocalisation of lar gibbons (Hylobates lar), the ‘hoo’ call. Gibbons and siamangs (family Hylobatidae) are known for their conspicuous and elaborate songs, while quieter, close range vocalisations have received almost no empirical attention, perhaps due to the difficult observation conditions in their natural forest habitats.
Results
We found that ‘hoo’ calls were emitted by both sexes in a variety of contexts, including feeding, …

ABSTRACT
Statistics in sports have increasingly become such an important factor, yet at the collegiate Division I level all the statistics are generated using an antiquated software called StatCrew. The software unbelievably still uses a DOS platform and is the standard for all sports statistics reporting among Division I level athletic programs in the United States.
The objectives of this study are to: (1) gauge customer satisfaction and trust in the StatCrew brand; (2) to investigate users needs in sports statistics reporting and how the current system should be improved; and (3), to gauge whether or not dissatisfaction is high …

Determining U.S. Citizens' Attitude Toward The Environment: An Econometric Analysis Of The New Environmental Paradigm (Nep), Ralph L. Beauvoir
Research Papers
This paper develops econometric models to address two objectives: (i) examining whether or not the demographic and socio-economic profiles play any role in explaining US citizens’ attitude toward environmental/ecological state of our planet, and (ii) determining whether such attitudes are significantly related to economic, environmental and social behaviors. US citizens’ attitudes toward ecological state of our planet are measured using the 15 questions from the New Ecological Paradigm (NEP). The level of agreement to the New Environmental Paradigm statements were measured by the Seven-Point-Likert scale. Incorporating various dimensions of our planet’s ecological problems/issues, the NEP measures whether respondents are optimistic …

Disaster And Gender In Southern Illinois, Shiloh L. Deitz
Disaster And Gender In Southern Illinois, Shiloh L. Deitz
The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)
The unique needs of women in the context of disaster have been largely overlooked in disaster management. For this reason, women have been hard-hit by natural disasters in the United States and internationally. However, by learning from the mistakes of the past, the negative effects of disasters on women may be mitigated through disaster management that is sensitive to the different needs and experiences of women and men.
Illinois is at risk for a variety of natural disasters including floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, and storms. Some areas of the state, including southern Illinois, are more vulnerable due to social characteristics such …
Effects Of Increasing The Distance Of An External Focus Of Attention On Vertical Jump, Vanessa Frost
Effects Of Increasing The Distance Of An External Focus Of Attention On Vertical Jump, Vanessa Frost
Research Papers
Several previous studies have demonstrated the benefits of distancing an external focus resulting in improved performance in a variety of skills. The objective of this study was to investigate whether increasing the distance of an external focus of attention relative to the body improved the performance of the counter-movement vertical jump in recreationally active individuals. It was hypothesized that jumps performed by recreationally active individuals under the external focus conditions would outperform performance completed in the control condition. Moreover, it was also predicted that jump height would systematically increase as the participants focus of attention was directed at an increasing …

University Food Gardens: A Unifying Place For Higher Education Sustainability, Leslie A. Duram, Sydney K. Klein
Publications
This research describes the key characteristics of campus food gardens and investigates their contribution to overall campus sustainability. An email-survey of fifty-two campus garden managers in North America provided quantitative and qualitative data for this analysis. It was found that gardens are often student initiated and managed, but also bring together diverse stakeholders from the campus and community. These sites increase sustainability awareness as well as overall institutional sustainability. University food gardens provide formal education that overcomes many institutional barriers to interdisciplinary programs. Informal education also occurs at these sites through experiential learning which leads to greater environmental awareness among …

Those diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer's disease present with varying degrees of behavioral symptomatology as the state of cognitive impairment progresses. The most marked of these symptoms are agitation and confusion, which can occur at any time of the day. When some individuals display these symptoms late in the afternoon they are said to be "sundowning." Sundowning is a term that has been applied to the phenomena of various behaviors occurring during this time of day but it has never been considered an official diagnosis nor has it ever been formally defined. This paper examines the concept of sundowning and …
The Influence Of Shame On The Frequency Of Self-Controlled Feedback And Motor Learning, Justin Ostrowski, Jared Porter
The Influence Of Shame On The Frequency Of Self-Controlled Feedback And Motor Learning, Justin Ostrowski, Jared Porter
Research Papers
Making learners aware of their mistakes is a frequent strategy used by practitioners; the common assumption is that doing this will ultimately lead to improvements in motor behavior. However, making someone aware of their errors, especially in front of their peers, can cause the person to feel ashamed. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of induced shame on the performance of a novel motor skill. More specifically, how shame effects the frequency of self-controlled feedback and the learning of a novel motor skill. Participants (N = 80) practiced a manual tracking task on a rotary pursuit …

Evaluation Of Multi-Tiered Systems Of Support Content In A Required Course For Teacher Candidates, Jill Winkelman
Honors Theses
Multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) involve the practice of providing high-quality instruction/intervention corresponding to student needs, and using learning rate over time and level of performance to make important educational decisions ( Fuchs & Fuchs, 2006a). It is being implemented in schools across the country in order to impact the learning of students with and without disabilities. MTSS integrates increasingly intensive instruction, reviews the student’s progress, and then identifies whether students need additional levels of intervention (Fuchs & Fuchs, 2006b).
The purpose of this research project is to examine how well the critical components of MTSS are being taught to …

The French Paradox is the theory that, despite consumption of classically-condoned fatty foods, the French remain in excellent health in comparison with citizens of other nations. This notion has been the subject of worldwide media fascination with publication of a plethora of journal articles and novels. A growing body of evidence supports a role for moderate consumption of wine in conferring health benefits. The role of wine in health may be especially prevalent in the French Riviera, a region whose regime is dominated by the French-Mediterranean Diet. I sought to determine the role of wine in the French Paradox by …
