Effects Of Sex, Age, And Season On Plasma Steroids In Free-Ranging Texas Horned Lizards (Phrynosoma Cornutum), Corina L. Wack, Stanley F. Fox, Eric C. Hellgren, Matthew P. Lovern Feb 2008

Effects Of Sex, Age, And Season On Plasma Steroids In Free-Ranging Texas Horned Lizards (Phrynosoma Cornutum), Corina L. Wack, Stanley F. Fox, Eric C. Hellgren, Matthew P. Lovern

Publications

The Texas horned lizard (Phrynosoma cornutum) is protected in several states due to its apparently declining numbers; information on its physiology is therefore of interest from both comparative endocrine and applied perspectives. We collected blood samples from free-ranging P. cornutum in Oklahoma from April to September 2005, spanning their complete active period. We determined plasma concentrations of the steroids, progesterone (P), testosterone (T), and corticosterone (CORT) by radioimmunoassay following chromatographic separation and 17β-estradiol (E2) by direct radioimmunoassay. T concentrations in breeding males were significantly higher than in non-breeding males. P showed no significant seasonal variation within either sex. …

Advocacy Through Briefs In The U.S. Courts Of Appeals, Susan B. Haire, Laura P. Moyer Jan 2008

Advocacy Through Briefs In The U.S. Courts Of Appeals, Susan B. Haire, Laura P. Moyer

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Counsel in appellate litigation play an important role in shaping a court's issue agenda by defining the context for their judicial audience. Through appellate briefs, advocates can provide clear cues in a complex decision making environment. This paper evaluates the role of advocates in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit by examining the characterization of issues offered in appellate briefs against the issues addressed in the court's decisions. Specifically, in an environment in which attorneys are expected to frame the issues on appeal and judges are expected to respond to those issues, what accounts for judges addressing …

Gvrs And Their Aftermath In The Seventh Circuit And Beyond, Sara C. Benesh Jan 2008

Gvrs And Their Aftermath In The Seventh Circuit And Beyond, Sara C. Benesh

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

In 2000, the U.S. Supreme Court decided Apprendi v. New Jersey, and in 2004, Blakely v. Washington, both of which concerned state court sentencing procedures. However, the Court did not make clear whether or not these precedents extended to federal court sentencing. The Seventh Circuit, in U.S. v. Booker (2004), reasoned that these decisions must hold also for federal sentencing, hence reversing the elevated sentence imposed by the judge under the preponderance of evidence standard, and remanding it to the Wisconsin district court for resentencing. The Supreme Court granted cert to U.S. v. Booker (along with a First Circuit case, …

Protecting Our Vulnerable Citizens: Birthright Citizenship And The Call For Recognition Of Constructive Deportation, Jessie M. Mahr Jan 2008

Protecting Our Vulnerable Citizens: Birthright Citizenship And The Call For Recognition Of Constructive Deportation, Jessie M. Mahr

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Problems arise when illegal immigrants have children while in the United States. Since these children become citizens by virtue of birthright citizenship, this creates a dilemma. This article focuses on the rights of the citizen child when the illegal immigrant parent is deported, also known as constructive deportation. The statistics show that a large number of families are affected by this situation. Yet, the courts do not see this as a problem and force the families to make the hard choices between leaving the child in the United States or denying the child the benefits of its citizenship and taking …

Career Choices And Career Advancement: Chinese American Librarians In The 21st Century, Ruan Lian, Jian Anna Xiong Jan 2008

Career Choices And Career Advancement: Chinese American Librarians In The 21st Century, Ruan Lian, Jian Anna Xiong

Articles

There is an increasing need to understand Chinese American librarians as one of the largest ethnic librarian groups in American library communities and a renewed interest to demonstrate a critical role they play in the Library and Information Science profession. This paper documents some strategies Chinese American librarians have adopted to meet the challenges and barriers they face. It is hoped that this study will encourage Chinese American librarians to develop methods for analyzing their careers so as to reach higher career goals.

Parametric Probability Densities And Distribution Functions For Tukey G-And-H Transformations And Their Use For Fitting Data, Todd C. Headrick, Rhonda K. Kowalchuk, Yanyan Sheng Jan 2008

Parametric Probability Densities And Distribution Functions For Tukey G-And-H Transformations And Their Use For Fitting Data, Todd C. Headrick, Rhonda K. Kowalchuk, Yanyan Sheng

Publications

The family of g-and-h transformations are popular algorithms used for simulating non-normal distributions because of their simplicity and ease of execution. In general, two limitations associated with g-and-h transformations are that their probability density functions (pdfs) and cumulative distribution functions (cdfs) are unknown. In view of this, the g-and-h transformations’ pdfs and cdfs are derived in general parametric form. Moments are also derived and it is subsequently shown how the g and h parameters can be determined for prespecified values of skew and kurtosis. Numerical examples and parametric plots of g-and-h pdfs …
