The Political Consequences Of Gender In Social Networks, Paul Djupe, Scott D. Mcclurg, Anand Sokhey
The Political Consequences Of Gender In Social Networks, Paul Djupe, Scott D. Mcclurg, Anand Sokhey
Working Papers
Prior research on communication in social networks demonstrates its influence on a variety of democratic behaviors including opinion formation, tolerance, voting behavior, and participation. Largely unexplored in this literature is the potential for unexplored heterogeneity in social influence, particularly across gender lines. In this paper, we move the discussion forward by examining how classic results in the field of social communication, which often did not even control for gender, yield different results when we consider gender dynamics. Women’s networks are constructed differently than men’s, but women also use their networks differently and process information from them differently than men do. …

Waiting For A More Certain Future; Decision Making In A Video Game, Tara Webb
Waiting For A More Certain Future; Decision Making In A Video Game, Tara Webb

A first-person-shooter video game was adapted for the study of probability discounting, in which an outcome decreases in value as its likelihood decreases, and delay discounting, in which an outcome decreases in value as the delay to its occurrence increases. This novel preparation was designed to address a criticism of previous research in the area. Discounting research using humans has been criticized for using hypothetical outcomes and tasks in which the probabilities and delays are not actually experienced. In the video game preparation, participants fired a weapon that could produce an explosion. The longer that they waited, the higher the …

Examining The Effects Of The Daubert Trilogy On Expert Evidence Practices In Federal Civil Court: An Empirical Analysis, David M. Flores, James T. Richardson, Mara L. Merlino
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
As the title suggests, this article examines the effects of the Daubert trilogy, a series of cases on expert evidence practices within the federal court system. The authors believe Daubert has placed judges in a “gatekeeper” function, requiring them to determine the scientific validity and admissibility of expert testimony. The other two cases within the trilogy further defined this new function of federal judges. The authors first discuss the background of their research project and the legal history and other studies done in this area. In the next section the authors go into great detail as to the methods of …
