Feminine Advocacy: Charlotte Smith’S Employment Of Gothic Landscape, Alisa Morris
Feminine Advocacy: Charlotte Smith’S Employment Of Gothic Landscape, Alisa Morris
Research Papers
This paper is an examination of the sublime as experienced through landscape by female characters in the novels of Charlotte Smith, particularly the spiritual sentiment experienced via the landscape. Ann Radcliffe is also used to understand the female relationship with landscape, especially in light of gothic tropes of feminine experience. Three of Smith's novels are examined: Emmeline, Desmond, and The Young Philosopher. Ann Radcliffe's A Sicilian Romance is also explored.

Seeing Double: A Diplopic Aesthetic In Experience And Performance, Samuel S. Sloan
Seeing Double: A Diplopic Aesthetic In Experience And Performance, Samuel S. Sloan
Research Papers
This investigation uses an autoethnographic approach to investigate the author's personal, phenomenological experience of diplopia, double vision, in order to apply the lived condition to an aesthetic form in performance. Using Kuppers's notion of a “crip aesthetic,” this piece re-functions a potential aspect of disability, the condition of diplopia, as a way of opening up discourses of multiplicity in art and performance. The author also calls for others to integrate non-normative body states into their art praxis.

A Sensitivity Analysis Of Gibbs Sampling For 3pno Irt Models, Yanyan Sheng
A Sensitivity Analysis Of Gibbs Sampling For 3pno Irt Models, Yanyan Sheng
Publications
The performance of the Gibbs sampling procedure for the three-parameter normal ogive (3PNO) IRT model was investigated using Monte Carlo simulations. Model parameters were estimated for tests with 10, 20, and 40 items and samples of 100, 300, 500, and 1000 examinees, where different actual values and prior specifications were considered for the item parameters. Summary statistics showed that this procedure was more affected by the choice of the prior distributions for the three-parameter model than the two-parameter model. For the 3PNO model, appropriate informative priors with relatively small spread should be adopted for the slope and intercept parameters to …

Notes, James Smith Allen
A Privileged Past
For more information about the sources used to write "A Privileged Past," the notes offer the reader the opportunity to explore the author's verifiable claims in more detail.

Act 4: How The Land Looks (C. 30,000 Bce-1984), James Smith Allen
A Privileged Past
Act 4 of "A Privileged Past" shifts its focus from the author and his experiences to his wife, Anne Winston, and her family, especially on the high plains of Oklahoma and the Pacific shores of southern California. This woman’s parents were descended from tenacious farmers, circuit preachers, and committed teachers. Arising out of a dysfunctional family, however, Winston’s quest for control over her personal life was located in educational and professional achievement in German Studies before 1984. The dominant metaphor of this chapter concerns sight, a natural sensibility that the protagonist has sharpened over years with her acute visual memory.
Act 6: A Sixth Sense?, James Smith Allen
Act 6: A Sixth Sense?, James Smith Allen
A Privileged Past
The last act of "A Privileged Past" is devoted to the author’s life and work in higher education at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and its ecological niche on the northern-most edge of the Shawnee National Forest. The faculty member’s teaching, research, and service are described and set within the context of an evolving academic community and its relationship to a larger environment. Given the limitations of empirical knowledge, the chapter’s chief metaphor is a sixth sense of what is right and of use to others, students especially, who are intent upon a better life for themselves.

Some Thoughts On The Relation Between Behavior Analysis And Behavioral Neuroscience, J Moore
Some Thoughts On The Relation Between Behavior Analysis And Behavioral Neuroscience, J Moore
The Psychological Record
A comprehensive science of behavior is concerned with two related, but nevertheless distinct, questions. The first question is "How is an organism's behavior functionally related to its environment?" The second question is "How do the organism's neural and hormonal systems mediate those functional relations?" Behavior analysis addresses the first question, whereas behavioral neuroscience addresses the second. The neural and hormonal information that behavioral neuroscience provides is important for a comprehensive science of behavior because the information enhances the possibilities for the prediction and control, rather than because it logically validates an explanation of behavior. Although cognitive psychology is ostensibly concerned …

Naive Psychological Science: The Prevalence, Strength, And Sources Of Misconceptions, Annette Kujawski Taylor, Patricia Kowalski
Naive Psychological Science: The Prevalence, Strength, And Sources Of Misconceptions, Annette Kujawski Taylor, Patricia Kowalski
The Psychological Record
Studies show that misconceptions about psychology are pervasive. This study examined how the strength of prior beliefs and the sources of misinformation relate to conceptual change following an introductory psychology course. Ninety introductory psychology students completed a 36-item "Psychological Information" questionnaire. Testing during the 1 st day of the semester showed 38.5% accuracy whereas testing during the last week showed 66.3% accuracy. These results suggest that misconceptions remain prevalent but can be reduced by taking an introductory psychology course. Our data also indicate that strength of belief is an important transitional variable that may reflect the process of change. Finally, …
Solitary Pain: Bertrand Russell As Cognitive Therapist, Geir Overskeid
Solitary Pain: Bertrand Russell As Cognitive Therapist, Geir Overskeid
The Psychological Record
Bertrand Russell was a prominent philosopher, mathematician, and political activist. It is less well known that Russell suffered from various psychological problems and developed his own method of dealing with them. Continuing a long philosophical tradition, Russell examined how faulty thinking may elicit painful emotions. Though seldom, if ever, mentioned among its harbingers, decades before the pioneers of cognitive therapy, Russell described the basic principles of this form of treatment. He also formulated promising therapyrelated hypotheses that are yet untested-as weill as making claims that seem plainly wrong. I discuss the relation between Russell's life, his thoughts on emotional problems, …
