Any Other Name( A Documentary Recounting A Chinese Family Saga Of Identities Through Generations), Shuman Deng

Research Papers

As China’s visibility to the world rapidly increases, the perception of Chinese identities is of concern by the Chinese themselves and by the world outside of China in trying to understand this burgeoning global power. The Chinese are very conscientious of how the world views them, and go to great lengths to effect this impression. One group that is representing China’s image to the world is the “80 Hou”, the post-80’s generation that are travelling and studying abroad more than their predecessors. They are unique in Chinese history and are the subject of interest in this research. Within this generation …

Contexts And Individual Differences As Influences On Consumers’ Delay Discounting, Gordon R. Foxall, John R. Doyle, Mirella Yani-De-Soriano, Victoria K. Wells Oct 2011

Contexts And Individual Differences As Influences On Consumers’ Delay Discounting, Gordon R. Foxall, John R. Doyle, Mirella Yani-De-Soriano, Victoria K. Wells

The Psychological Record

Delay discounting is often considered a universal feature of human choice behavior, but there is controversy over whether it is an individual difference that reflects an underlying psychological trait or a domain-specific behavior. Trait influence on discounting would manifest in (a) highly correlated discount rates for all decisions, regardless of context, and (b) the reflection of discounting behavior in psychometric measures of individual difference. We examined these propositions for consumers making hypothetical decisions with respect to financial returns, health outcomes, and vacation alternatives. Questionnaires were employed to assess discounting rates, and respondents’ (N = 74) cognitive styles were measured by …

A Fistful Of Dollars: Bounty Hunting Under The Dodd-Frank Act’S Whistleblower Provisions, Neil Schonert Oct 2011

A Fistful Of Dollars: Bounty Hunting Under The Dodd-Frank Act’S Whistleblower Provisions, Neil Schonert

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

In the wake of the financial crises and recessions of the new millennium, Congress realized it must take more action to avert future disasters.  The Dodd-Frank Act provided the government with more oversight and tools to tackle new problems and securities violations.  One of these tools was the Act’s whistleblower provisions, which provided monetary incentives to whistleblowers providing valuable inside information on violations in the financial sector.

This Article examines previous attempts by Congress to secure inside information from individuals as well as the Dodd-Frank Act’s own attempt.  These prior attempts often created improper thresholds for whistleblowers, either barring good …

Instructions, Stimulus Equivalence, And Stimulus Sorting: Effects Of Sequential Testing Arrangements And A Default Option, Paul M. Smeets, Simon Dymond, Dermot Barnes-Holmes

The Psychological Record

The present study was a modified replication of a paper-and-pencil format study by Eikeseth, Rosales-Ruiz, Duarte, and Baer (1997) on equivalence relations derived from instructionally induced conditional relations. The study consisted of three experiments, all with Dutch psychology students as subjects. After being instructed to memorize four printed examples of arbitrary A-B and B-C conditional discrimination tasks and completing A-B and B-C trials in the presence of these examples, the subjects received a series of probe trials (no access to the examples): baseline and symmetric transitivity (C-A) probes (Experiment 1), or baseline, symmetry (B-A, C-B), and symmetric transitivity probes followed …

Behaviorism, J Moore Aug 2011

Behaviorism, J Moore

The Psychological Record

Early forms of psychology assumed that mental life was the appropriate subject matter for psychology, and introspection was an appropriate method to engage that subject matter. In 1913, John B. Watson proposed an alternative: classical S–R behaviorism. According to Watson, behavior was a subject matter in its own right, to be studied by the observational methods common to all sciences. Unfortunately, by around 1930, Watson’s behaviorism had proved inadequate. Many researchers and theorists then adopted a view in which various organismic entities were inferred to mediate the relation between S and R: mediational S–O–R neobehaviorism. This general view has remained …

The Dominance Of Associative Theorizing In Implicit Attitude Research: Propositional And Behavioral Alternatives, Sean Hughes, Dermot Barnes-Holmes, Jan De Houwer Aug 2011

The Dominance Of Associative Theorizing In Implicit Attitude Research: Propositional And Behavioral Alternatives, Sean Hughes, Dermot Barnes-Holmes, Jan De Houwer

The Psychological Record

In the present article we re-examine one of the most deeply entrenched assumptions in modern attitude research, namely, that implicit social cognition is a product of associations between mental representations. More precisely, we argue that the analysis of implicit social cognition in psychology is curtailed by the widespread adoption of the associative assumption. We open with a brief overview of the attitude literature, with a particular emphasis on the fundamental structure, measurement, and conceptual differences that have emerged between implicit and explicit attitudes in recent times. Thereafter we address the influence of the associative assumption in shaping our methodologies, research …

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

Higher education institutions are facing a complex challenge to better equip graduates with the necessary tools to compete in the global market. The authors of this paper facilitated a Structured Group Interview process in a Department of Agricultural and Industrial Sciences at Sam Houston State University to enhance their horticulture program by implementing a Landscape Installation and Maintenance Course. To maintain the level of competence that industry demands, two alumni landscaping managers were invited to participate in designing a course based on industry input. The purpose of this study was to use the Structured Group Interview process for university and …

The Black Catholic Movement And Social Movement Continuity Theory: The Civil Rights Movement In Abeyance, Kevin C. Winstead Aug 2011

The Black Catholic Movement And Social Movement Continuity Theory: The Civil Rights Movement In Abeyance, Kevin C. Winstead

Research Papers

This work builds on Verta Taylor’s theory on social movement continuity to explain abeyance structures within total institutions. The work is grounded in the reinterpretation of Doug McAdam’s data from Political Process and the Development of Black Insurgency (1982) and in new data on the Black Catholic Rights movement from 1968 to the 1990s. Together these cases outline a type of abeyance structure within social movements that holds over the culture, resources, and strategies of a movement by focusing on more narrow oppositional interest. Using the five characteristics of an abeyance structure the research will discuss how the Black Catholic …

Effects Of Chronic Exercise On Measures Of Body Shame In Obese College-Aged Individuals, Margaret J. Morrissy Aug 2011

Effects Of Chronic Exercise On Measures Of Body Shame In Obese College-Aged Individuals, Margaret J. Morrissy

Research Papers

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of a 6-week structured exercise program on levels of body shame in obese college-aged individuals. It was hypothesized that participants would display lower levels of body-shame, higher levels of body-surveillance and body-control following the exercise intervention. It was also hypothesized that participants would have higher levels of self-determination upon completion of the program. Through a mixed methodology of open-ended, in-depth interviews and surveys it was determined self-conscious emotions decrease following a 6-week exercise program and participants display improved shame-coping mechanisms.

Screening For Alcohol And Drug Use Among Persons With Disabilities, Matthew E. Sprong

Research Papers

People with disabilities experience many barriers when attempting to gain employment. Substance Use Disorders (SUDS) is one particular challenge that has been identified in this research paper. Individuals with SUDS experience an increase in unsucessful case closures in state funded vocational rehabilitation agencies. Screening for SUDS has been overlooked in many agencies and his paper intends to identify barriers of a screening protocal in state VR and provide recommendations for subcontracted-state comprehensive vocational evaluation programs to contribute to screening for SUDS.

White Americans' Affect Toward African Americans: Predictive Power On Political Behavior And Measurement Problems, Paul Gerard Gottemoller

Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact white affect toward African Americans has on whites' racial policy opinions. The study also identifies the difficulty of measuring affect in the traditional feeling thermometer. Moreover, the study introduces and tests a new method for measuring affect that improves interpersonal comparability of reported affect by anchoring the respondents' self-placements. The study investigates the changes in the relationship between white affect toward African Americans and racial policy opinions of presidential election years between 1964 and 2008. Furthermore, the study tests a new method for measuring affect by having respondents rate where …

An Examination Of Educators' Perceptions Of The School's Role In The Prevention Of Childhood Obesity, Sharon Harris Johnson

Dissertations

Childhood obesity is a prevalent subject of research currently, and many researchers have studied the effectiveness of school programs in battling obesity among students. This case study, utilizing ethnographic tools of observation, interviews, and investigation of artifacts, examines educators' perceptions of the role of the school in the prevention of this epidemic, how perceptions affect practices, and the barriers to prevention efforts. The lens of caring theory, social justice, and critical theory frame the analysis of how educators in a medium-sized elementary school contend with the problem of childhood obesity. Educators in this setting perceived their role in the prevention …

Youth In Revolt. How Suburban Youth Of The 1950s Rejected The Contradictions Of An Affluent Society In Favor Of Apocalyptic Zombies And Chicken Runs, Michele Leigh Goostree

Theses

The purpose of this study is two-fold. First, I will examine the influences shaping the choices of teenagers living in an affluent society during the early days of the Cold War, specifically 1950 - 1955. I will discuss the contradictions about society, the family unit, and gender roles teenagers attempted to sort out as they moved through adolescence. Secondly, I will focus on two forms of mass media, specifically comic books and movies of the 1950s. Media has always had the power to change and shape the opinion of the youth culture who consumed it. I will discuss the lengths …
