Microbes Pumping Iron: Anaerobic Microbial Iron Oxidation And Reduction, Karrie A. Weber, Laurie A. Achenbach, John D. Coates

Publications

Iron (Fe) has long been a recognized physiological requirement for life, yet for many microorganisms that persist in water, soils and sediments, its role extends well beyond that of a nutritional necessity. Fe(II) can function as an electron source for iron-oxidizing microorganisms under both oxic and anoxic conditions and Fe(III) can function as a terminal electron acceptor under anoxic conditions for iron-reducing microorganisms. Given that iron is the fourth most abundant element in the Earth's crust, iron redox reactions have the potential to support substantial microbial populations in soil and sedimentary environments. As such, biological iron apportionment has been described …

Olive oil is a natural fruit, product of fine aroma, pleasant taste and has high nutritional values. Olive oil is considered as most useful edible oil in the world due to its nutrient contents and well tolerated by the stomach. Olive oil provides beneficial effects against ulcer, gastritis and colon cancer. It is composed of triglycerides, free fatty acids hydrocarbons, antioxidants and flavor compounds. In the present study we report new edible oil extracted from fruit of wild olive (Olea cuspedata). Samples of olive fruits were collected from hilly areas of Kotli Sattian, (District Rawalpindi) and were analyzed to evaluate …

The Need For Tobacco Education: Studies Of Collegiate Dental Hygiene Patients And Faculty, Joan M. Davis Rdh, Ms, Margaret S Stockdale, Martha Cropper Dec 2005

The Need For Tobacco Education: Studies Of Collegiate Dental Hygiene Patients And Faculty, Joan M. Davis Rdh, Ms, Margaret S Stockdale, Martha Cropper

Journal Articles

The need for inclusion of comprehensive tobacco control education/training for health care providers continues to be stressed in publications addressing cessation services. The dental appointment presents an excellent opportunity to provide tobacco interventions to basically healthy people on regular intervals. The purpose of this study was twofold: 1) to assess the need (stage of change and concomitant need for tobacco cessation intervention) of dental hygiene patients at a Midwest dental hygiene clinic, and 2) to assess and compare the level of tobacco intervention education currently being offered by dental hygiene educators in a Midwestern state. Patients (n=426) of a collegiate …

Growth, Fecundity, And Diets Of Newly Established Silver Carp In The Middle Mississippi River, Christopher J. Williamson, James E. Garvey Nov 2005

Growth, Fecundity, And Diets Of Newly Established Silver Carp In The Middle Mississippi River, Christopher J. Williamson, James E. Garvey

Publications

The silver carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix has spread throughout the Mississippi River drainage. During 2003, we determined its population status and potential impact in the middle Mississippi River (MMR), the conduit between the lower Mississippi River and the upper Mississippi, Missouri, and Illinois rivers. We quantified growth, age structure, fecundity, and diets of silver carp sampled with trammel nets and AC electrofishing in main-channel areas. Mean length at age in the MMR exceeded that of populations in Asia by as much as 26%. Individuals were typically more than 1 year old and 230 mm total length, suggesting that small, young fish …

Exogamy And Bias Against Daughters In Health-Care Provision: A Theory And Evidence From Two Northern States In India, Sajal Lahiri, Sharmistha Self Aug 2005

Exogamy And Bias Against Daughters In Health-Care Provision: A Theory And Evidence From Two Northern States In India, Sajal Lahiri, Sharmistha Self

Economics Discussion Papers

This is a theoretical and empirical paper to analyze possible bias against daughters in the provision of healthcare. Women once married become part of in-laws’ families, leading to certain inter-family externalities in household decision making, which in turn result in gender bias in healthcare. We test our theoretical predictions using LSMS household survey data from two Indian states, viz. Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. We find strong evidence for the existence of bias against daughters. We also find, consistent with our theory but contrary to conventional wisdom, that the bias is more pronounced among Hindu families (who tend to practice exogamy) …

Perceived Health Benefit And Soy Consumption Behavior: Two Stage Decision Model Approach, Wanki Moon, Siva K. Balasubramanian, Arbindra Rimal Aug 2005

Perceived Health Benefit And Soy Consumption Behavior: Two Stage Decision Model Approach, Wanki Moon, Siva K. Balasubramanian, Arbindra Rimal

Articles

A two-stage decision model is developed to assess the effect of perceived soy health benefits on consumers' decisions with respect to soy food. The first stage captures whether or not to consume soy food, while the second stage reflects how often to consume. A conceptual/analytical framework is also employed, combining Lancaster's characteristics model and Fishbein's multi-attribute model. Results show that perceived soy health benefits significantly influence both decision stages. Further, consumers' negative perceptions regarding soy (unappetizing taste and inconvenience) have a substantially greater impact on soy consumption behavior than their perceptions about soy health benefits. This finding carries significant implications …

Eeotogists increasingly recognize the need to understand how landscapes ami food webs interact. Reservoir ecosystems are heavily subsidized by nutrients and detritus from surrounding watersheds, and ofren contain abundant populations of gizzard shad, an omnivorous ftsh that consumes plankton and detritus. Gizzard shad link terrestrial landscapes ami pelagic reservoir food webs by consuming detritus, translocating nutrients from sedimctn detritus to the water column, and consuming zooplaukton. The abundance of gizzard shad increases with watershed agricuhuralization, most likely through n variety oj mechanisms npeniting on ttuvat and adult life stages. Gizzard shad have myriad effects on reservoirs, including impacts on nutrients, …

Discovery Of The Photosynthetic Relatives Of The "Maltese Mushroom" Cynomorium, Daniel L Nickrent, Joshua P Der, Frank E Anderson

Publications

Although recent molecular phylogenetic studies have identified the photosynthetic relatives of several enigmatic holoparasitic angiosperms, uncertainty remains for the last parasitic plant order, Balanophorales, often considered to include two families, Balanophoraceae and Cynomoriaceae. The nonphotosynthetic (holoparasitic) flowering plant Cynomorium coccineum has long been known to the Muslim world as "tarthuth" and to Europeans as the "Maltese mushroom"; C. songaricum is known in Chinese medicine as "suo yang." Interest in these plants is increasing and they are being extensively collected from wild populations for use in herbal medicines. RESULTS: Here we report molecular phylogenetic analyses of nuclear ribosomal DNA and mitochondrial …

Dental Anomalies In Two Species Of Canids: Red Fox (Vulpes Vulpes) And Gray Fox (Urocyon Cinereoargenteus), Teresa Gisburne

Honors Theses

Samples of 510 gray fox and 150 red fox from southern Illinois were examined for the presence of congenital dental abnormalities. Anomalies were found in 177 gray fox (34.7%) and 25 red fox (16.6%). The most frequent anomalies were oligodonty in both species. The major case of oligodonty was in m3. Anomalies affecting the placement of the tooth (rotations, misalignments) were the next most prominent abnormalities observed. One red fox showed polydonty, and two gray fox showed varying degrees of connation. Other anomalies were seen infrequently. The results from the red fox population are consistent with previous studies; however, the …
