Ethnobotany And Traditional Management Of Drought Tolerant Tree Species In Homestead Forests Of Bangladesh, Mahbubul Alam, Yasushi Furukawa
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
A study has been conducted in the homesteads of drought-prone northwestern region of Bangladesh. Since there is no natural forest, the overall climatic condition is very harsh and progressive trend of desertification is threatening the livelihood of poor people. So it is important to carry out extensive plantations throughout the region to reverse the current trend of drought and desertification. The study identified a list of 19 drought tolerant species suitable for planting in the homesteads as well as in the vacant spaces. The rural people are heavily dependent on those species for their daily requirement of timber, fruits, fuel, …

Ethnomedicinal Uses Of Plants In The Plains Area Of The Tirunelveli-District, Tamilnanu, India, D. Vanila, S. Ghanthikumar, V. S. Manickam
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
India has a rich heritage of using medicinal plants for indigenous uses and practices. Some of the country's best herbal medicines have also been introduced worldwide, and new applications have been found for them in different parts of the world. This new found "fame", however, has proven to be troublesome for India in some instances. For example, the “turmeric case” highlights the problems faced by this country in preventing bio-piracy. Traditional systems of medicine such as Ayurveda, Sidda, Unani, and homeopathy make use of more than 2000 plant species. Local People, medicinal practitioners and tribal healers of this country where …

Articles
We report on a citation analysis of PhD dissertations in Plant Biology and Zoology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, undertaken to test the common assumption that scientists favor current research to such an extent that journal backfiles can be de-emphasized in academic library collections. Results demonstrate otherwise. The study is reproducible for any institution, and can help to evaluate 1) the value of electronic journal backfiles and 2) the need to maintain print backfiles.

Impact Of Changes In The Microclimatic Conditions On Species Diversity Of Insectivorous Plants At Karungalagudi, (Tn) India, S. Ramya Et Al.
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
A study on the interrelationship between the factors influencing vegetation change and composition of insectivorous plant community was carried out at Karungalagudi, India. Anthropogenic intervention at this site due to industrial development, agro-industrial pollution, mining, quarrying has accelerated the pace by which the microclimatic and environmental conditions have shown ever-changing temporal and special variation. This has resulted in alteration in community composition of insectivorous plants at this consortium. Anthropogenic activities along with changes in ecological process have altered the microclimatic conditions conducive for the sustenance of the tiny plant association among the members of insectivorous (Droseraceae, Lentibulariaceae), non insectivorous (Eriocaulaceae, …

Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Contact Rates In Female White-Tailed Deer, Lene J. Kjaer, Eric M. Schauber, Clayton K. Nielsen
Publications
White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are important game mammals and potential reservoirs of diseases of domestic livestock; thus, diseases of deer are of great concern to wildlife managers. Contact, either direct or indirect, is necessary for disease transmission, but we know little about the ecological contexts that promote intrasexual contact among deer. Using pair-wise direct contacts estimated from Global Positioning System collar locations and joint utilization distributions (JUDs), we assessed habitats in which contacts occur to test whether direct contact rates among female white-tailed deer in different social groups differs among land-cover types. We also tested whether contact rates …

Mistletoes: Pathology, Systematics, Ecology, And Management, Robert L. Mathiasen, Daniel L. Nickrent, David C. Shaw, David M. Watson
Publications
Mistletoes are familiar to most Europeans and North Americans because of the Christmas folklore associated with these parasitic flowering plants (33,116). Some may also know these plants are parasites of trees but do not realize that mistletoes are widespread, ecologically important components of forests worldwide. Although some mistletoe species are damaging pathogens, most do not impact economically valuable crops and forest products but actually play key roles in forest ecosystems. Particularly in Loranthaceae, coevolutionary relationships with birds (involving pollination and seed dispersal) have fueled several adaptive radiations, thus producing one of the most diverse and fascinating life forms on our …

Free Radical Scavenging Activity Of Folklore: Pithecellobium Dulce Benth. Leaves, M. Sugumaran, T. Vetrichelvan, S. Darlin Quine
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
In the present study, the aqueous and alcoholic extract of Pithecellobium dulce leaves were evaluated for radical scavenging activity using reducing power assay method. Aqueous extract showed potent free radical scavenging activity, than alcohol extract. The observed activity could be due to higher phenolic content in the extracts (0.2171& 0.2042 mg/g in aqueous and alcohol extract respectively). HPTLC fingerprint profile of the ethanol and aqueous extracts were developed which would serve as reference standard for quality control of these extracts
