Antioxidative Potentials Of Banana And Plantain Peel Extracts On Crude Palm Oil, Arawande Jacob Olalekan, Komolafe Eniayo Ayodeji

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Crude palm oil was obtained from a local palm oil producer at Iyere, Owo, Ondo-State, Nigeria. Ripe peels of banana and plantain were removed from their fruits, cut, sun dried, ground, sieved and separately extracted with five different types of solvents (methanol, acetic acid, ethylacetate, acetone and chloroform). The percent yield of each extract was calculated. The solvent extraction result showed that acetic acid had the highest yield of extract of banana (20.27± 0.28%) and plantain (15.84±0.31%) peels. The lowest yield of extract was obtained with chloroform for banana peel (4.69±0.13%) and plantain peel (3.39±0.09%). The acetic acid extracts of …

Female Reaction To Male Urine Scents As Potential Indicator Of Mate Choice In Captive Cheetahs (Acinonyx Jubatus), Regina Helen Mossotti

Theses

AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF REGINA HELEN MOSSOTTI, for the Master of Science degree in ZOOLOGY, presented 23 October 2009, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: FEMALE REACTION TO MALE URINE SCENTS AS POTENTIAL INDICATOR OF MATE CHOICE IN CAPTIVE CHEETAHS (ACINONYX JUBATUS) MAJOR PROFESSOR: GEORGE A. FELDHAMER Genetic variation in the cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) has become dangerously low because of dramatic population decline and fragmentation. Zoos throughout the world manage captive cheetahs with breeding programs to maximize genetic heterozygosity. Unfortunately, the zoo community has not accomplished consistent breeding success with cheetahs, possibly because of a general lack of …

In Vitro Antimicrobial Activity Of Sapindus Mukorossi And Emblica Officinalis Against Dental Caries Pathogens, Kamal Rai Aneja, Radhika Joshi, Chetan Sharma

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The in vitro antimicrobial activity of Sapindus mukorossi and Emblica officinalis fruit extracts were studied against Streptococcus mutans, Staphylococcus aureus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The acetone, ethanol, methanol, hot water and cold water extracts of S.mukorossi exhibited antimicrobial activity against one of the tested microorganisms i.e. S.cerevisiae. All the five extracts of E.officinalis showed inhibitory activity against S.mutans while the acetonic, hot and cold aqueous extracts showed inhibitory activity against S.aureus also. The largest zone of inhibition was obtained with the acetonic extract of S.mukorossi against S.cerevisiae (29.65mm) and hot water extract of E.officinalis against S.aureus (40.32mm). …

Studies On The Antimicrobial Properties And Phytochemical Screening Of Garlic (Allium Sativum) Extracts, M. J. Olusanmi, J. E. Amadi

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

This study evaluates the antimicrobial properties of garlic (Allium sativum) extracts on three fungi namely Aspergillus flavus, Curvularia lunata and Fusarium moniliforme using the pour plate method. A phytochemical screening of the extracts was also carried out to determine the constituents of garlic. Water, ethanol and acetone were the extractants used. Results showed that radial growth in all the three test organisms was impaired by the addition of the extracts in the culture medium used. The test organisms differed in their reaction to the different extracts but on the whole, growth inhibition increased with the concentration of each extract. Phytochemical …

Semi-structured questionnaires were administered to a total of 120 randomly selected respondents. MINITAB statistical package was used to analyze the data. Logistic regression analysis was performed to show the influence of socio-economic characteristics on farmers’ towards their attitudes to plant IFTs. The population of IFTs was found to be generally …

Cradle To Grave: A Study Of Sustainable Food Practices In A University Setting, Ryan Babich, Sylvia Smith Mar 2010

Cradle To Grave: A Study Of Sustainable Food Practices In A University Setting, Ryan Babich, Sylvia Smith

Posters

The goal of this research was to understand the process of food service sustainability through a limited “cradle-to-grave” analysis of Southern Illinois University’s campus dining facilities. The process of researching the dining halls’ sustainability was broken into three separate stages: food mileage analysis, food waste analysis, and vermicomposting analysis.

The first stage examined the food mileage for each food item. Using a mileage calculator and a carbon footprint calculator, we were able to determine miles traveled and the amount of CO2 produced by the university. Results showed that the dining halls were 15.67% sustainable in its food purchasing process. The …

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Influence of time of weed removal on both vegetative and reproductive yield of two cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L) Walp) varieties, Ife brown and TVX3236, was investigated on a farm land at the University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria during 2004 and 2005 growing seasons. Five hand weeding periods at 2,4,6,8 Weeks After Planting (WAP) and weedy control, were carried out. Hand weeding at 2WAP produced best cowpea dry matter ranging from 6.33±2.08 to 13.37±2.47g in both varieties. Highest leaf number was obtained in the cowpea plots weeded at both 2 and 4 WAP ranging from 43.00±13.05 to 106.67±25.16 in both varieties. …
