Groundwater Quality Impacts Due To Population Growth And Land Use Exploitation In The Coastal Aquifers Of Sri Lanka, Dumindu Jayasekera, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi, Karen G. Villholth
Groundwater Quality Impacts Due To Population Growth And Land Use Exploitation In The Coastal Aquifers Of Sri Lanka, Dumindu Jayasekera, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi, Karen G. Villholth
2008
Previous studies have tried to investigate the impact of agriculture on groundwater quality of coastal aquifers but not tried to assess the overall water quality impacts considering sea water intrusion effects, vulnerability, and public health impacts. This study is focused on studying vulnerability of coastal aquifers producing groundwater quality concerns in the presence of sea water intrusion, population growth, and agriculture dominated land use activities.
Community Water Education In Northwestern North Carolina, Kristan M. Cockerill
Community Water Education In Northwestern North Carolina, Kristan M. Cockerill
2008
The southeastern drought has prompted regular media coverage, policy proclamations, and mandatory changes in water use for many communities. While the public is encountering the news and in some cases feeling the effects of water restrictions, there is little evidence that they well understand the connections between hydrological realities and policies regarding water resources. An example of this is the increasing number of requests for well-drilling permits as a way to tap “new” water in some communities. To begin to address this gap in public understanding, MountainKeepers, a non-profit organization based in Boone, NC, has partnered with students and faculty …
Anti-Bacterial Activity Studies Of Jasminum Grandiflorum And Jasminum Sambac, Priya Joy, D. Patric Raja
Anti-Bacterial Activity Studies Of Jasminum Grandiflorum And Jasminum Sambac, Priya Joy, D. Patric Raja
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
This preliminary phyotochemical study of the antimicrobial activity of ethanolic callus extracts focused on two species of Jasminum, J. grandiflorum and J. sambac. The plants are widely used as traditional medicine in India for skin disorders. Preliminary phytochemical analyses of the callus extracts reveled the presence of alkaloids, glycoside, flavanoid, terpines, tannin, resin, and salicylic acid. The extracts were subjected for screening of in vitro antimicrobial activity against selected disease causing pathogens, viz., Staphylococcus albus, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella typhii, etc., at concentrations of 500 mg/ml, 250 mg/ml. The results of antimicrobial activity revealed that all the extracts showed …

Screening Of Anti-Phytopathogenic Activity Of Terminalia Thorelii, R. P. Shirsat
Screening Of Anti-Phytopathogenic Activity Of Terminalia Thorelii, R. P. Shirsat
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
The anti-phytopathogenic activity of crude and methanol extract of leaves, Stem bark, seed and dry fruit of Terminalia thorelli was tested by disc diffusion method, against four phytopathogens. Crude aqueous extract of plant parts taken of 5 mg concentration showed zone of inhibition ranging from 11-22 mm. Xanthomonas axanopodis pv. malvacearum was found to be highly susceptible with highest zone of inhibition suggesting the strong inhibitory activity of these extracts towards the selected bacterial pathogens. These pathogens were more sensitive to the methanol extracts forming 13- 28 mm zone of inhibition suggesting that the methanol extract is little more effective …

The 2008 Presidential Nominations Process, A Marathon And A Sprint: An Analysis Of What Happened And Why, John S. Jackson
The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)
The 2008 nominations process will certainly go down in history as one of the longest, most contentious, and most expensive in the nation’s history. It was also one of the most interesting and exciting ever. The race had more officially declared candidates, had more money spent on it, and for the Democrats was more closely contested than any race in recent history. It was one for the record books in many respects. For the Democrats it unexpectedly became a marathon which extended from January of 2007 through early June of 2008, almost eighteen months of intense combat. The slug fest …

In Vitro Micropropagation Of Talinum Portulacifolium L. Through Axillary Bud Culture, K. Thangavel Et Al.
In Vitro Micropropagation Of Talinum Portulacifolium L. Through Axillary Bud Culture, K. Thangavel Et Al.
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
The present study describes a protocol for rapid and large scale in vitro micropropagation of Talinum portulacifolium L. through axillary bud culture. The culture medium was optimized for propagation and high ex vitro survival rate was achieved. MS medium supplemented with 6µM BAP and 2µM IAA in combination was shown a better efficiency of shoot proliferation. Maximum of 8 new shoots were developed from a single explant (axillary bud) after 3 subcultures (subculture interval 15 days). Root development was facilitated by MS medium supplemented with both IBA (4µM) and NAA(1µM). Well rooted and partially acclimatized plantlets were transferred into poly …

Conservation Efforts Through In Vitro Seed Germination Of A Hepatoprotective Plant - Phyllanthus Beddomie (Gamble) Mohanan, Muthia Maridass, K. Thangavel
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
In vitro propagation of endangered plants can offer considerable benefits for the rapid cultivation of species that are at risk, that have limited reproductive capacity and exist in threatened habitats.

Toxicity Of Gynandropsis Pentaphylla Dc Extracts Against Microbials And Its Phytochemical Profile, J. Francis Borgio, Pravin K. Thorat, Archana D. Lonkar
Toxicity Of Gynandropsis Pentaphylla Dc Extracts Against Microbials And Its Phytochemical Profile, J. Francis Borgio, Pravin K. Thorat, Archana D. Lonkar
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Fresh leaves, roots, stems, seeds and seed pods of Gynandropsis pentaphylla DC were used in extractions with benzene and ether. Fresh extracts were tested against 6 bacteria and 4 fungi using the well diffusion method. Extracts of roots, stems, leaves, seeds and seed pods were screened phytochemically for the presence of secondary metabolites such as tannin, alkaloid, flavones, sugar, phenolic group, essential oil, amino acids and saponin. All the phytochemicals were observed in all the plant part extracts using both ether and benzene. Among the bacterial cultures, Agrobacterium tumefaciens (NCIM 2145) was highly susceptible (28.0±0.3 mm) to both ether and …

Preliminary Phytochemical Screening And Antibacterial Studies On The Ethanolic Leaf Extract Of Nyctanthes Arbortristis Linn., M. Sathiya, P. Parimala, K. Muthuchelian
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Nyctanthes arbortristis Linn. is extensively used in Indian traditional and folklore medicines to cure various human ailments. The preliminary phytochemical screening of the leaves revealed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, cardiac glycosides and sugars. In vitro antibacterial studies on the ethanolic leaf extracts were carried out on ten medically important bacterial strains, including Salmonella typimurium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumonia, Escherichia coli, Psudomonas sp. Staphylococcus epidermis, Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococccus sp. and Bacillus subtilis, which were procured from the Microbial Type Cultrue and Collection, Chandigarh, India, using agar disc diffusion method. The bacterial strains were exposed to the …
