Empowering Social Media: Citizens-Source E-Government And Peer-To-Peer Networks, Maxat Kassen

2012

Since 1990s when e-government concept was offered various possible models of interactive services have been suggested both by practitioners and theorists all over the world. But the key challenge has been the same - how to find the effective way of citizens engagement using the digital government platform?

The ultimate goal of any e-government project is promotion of transparency and participation. But the paradox of the concept is a traditional one way mechanism of its realization. In fact, all efforts to further the idea in its various forms all over the world are driven by standard top-down administrative commands or …

The Political Coorientation Of Young Adults In Voluntary Associations And Its Relation With Conversation, William P. Eveland Jr, Myiah J. Hutchens Jun 2012

The Political Coorientation Of Young Adults In Voluntary Associations And Its Relation With Conversation, William P. Eveland Jr, Myiah J. Hutchens

2012

We employ social network data from 25 randomly sampled voluntary associations to understand the factors associated with accurate perceptions of the political preferences of fellow group members. We build upon research in communication, social psychology, and social networks to identify relevant predictors. We analyze relationships at the dyadic level, but we also consider the aggregated accuracy of perceptions by ego of alters (“perceptiveness”) and the aggregated accuracy of perception by alters of ego (“explicitness”) regarding political candidate preferences using a multilevel modeling approach. We find relatively low levels of accuracy on average, and in general the variables that predict perceptiveness …

Revolutionary Identities And Competing Legitimacies: Why Pariah States Export Violence, Ari B. Weiss May 2012

Revolutionary Identities And Competing Legitimacies: Why Pariah States Export Violence, Ari B. Weiss

Honors Theses

Amid the burgeoning literature on international norms, the study of states that violate them, so called pariahs, remains sparse (Shannon 2000). Although recent studies of pariah states have the identified numerous ways in which they break international norms, we do not know why they pursue one action over another (E.g Geldenhuys 2004, Nincic 2005). I argue that the export of violence is caused by the state’s "revolutionary identity" which leads to the adoption of competing and incompatible norms. Using qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) I test this against other alternate and prevailing hypotheses, demonstrating that a combination of sovereignty, existential threat, …

Modeling Total Suspended Solids In Combined Sewer Systems, Weilan Zhang May 2012

Modeling Total Suspended Solids In Combined Sewer Systems, Weilan Zhang

Theses

The untreated overflow of combined sewer system contains a variety of pollutants that can contaminate the receiving water body. Total suspended solids (TSS) transported in the sewer networks can adsorb these pollutants and become the main contaminant source. Existing models contain a numerous formulas that make the calculation process complex and time consuming. A simplified model was presented in this thesis to simulate the process of TSS transport in combined sewer pipes. The combined sewer system evaluated was a combination of an existing sewer system in Le Marais and an example system provided with the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). …

Takarazuka For The Family: Japanese All-Women’S Musical Theater And Traditional Gender Perceptions, Kay Satoh May 2012

Takarazuka For The Family: Japanese All-Women’S Musical Theater And Traditional Gender Perceptions, Kay Satoh

Graduate Student Work

Takarazuka, the Japanese all-female musical theater troupe has been inspiring Japanese audiences since 1913, when it first began as a place for training young girls to becoming ryosai kenbo, or “good wives, wise mothers.” The women are assigned either as a musumeyaku (daughter-role) or otokoyaku (male-role) when performing on stage. The founder, Ichizo Kobayashi hoped that the training through the Takarazuka Music School as well as the experience of performing male roles would strengthen the character of these young women, ultimately preparing them for marriage. Around 1930, he also created the school motto, “Kiyoku, tadashiku, utsukushiku,” meaning “[With] purity, …

Irish Chefs And Restaurants In The Geography Of “Local” Food Value Chains, Leslie Duram, Mary Cawley May 2012

Irish Chefs And Restaurants In The Geography Of “Local” Food Value Chains, Leslie Duram, Mary Cawley

Publications

Restaurant chefs and owners have a potentially influential role to play in promoting the use of local foods and supporting producers. Indeed chefs are taste makers, and their conceptualization of local food can influence consumers’ perceptions, knowledge and geographical awareness. Yet their role is not well documented in research literature. In-depth interviews were conducted with seven purposively selected chefs in Galway City, Ireland, who are seeking to develop a local cuisine. Menus, websites, and statements of philosophy were also analyzed. Attention focused on the definition of local food, sources of supply, how local food is used in cuisine, and how …

The Use Of Stomp To Evaluate The Impact Of Heterogeneity On Lnapl Pool Configuration, Saroj Kandel

Theses

AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF SAROJ KANDEL, for the Masters of Science degree in CIVIL ENGINEERING, presented on February 6, 2012, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: THE USE OF STOMP TO EVALUATE THE IMPACT OF HETEROGENEITY ON LNAPL POOL CONFIGURATION MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Lizette R. Chevalier Subsurface contamination by light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) is a widespread problem. A common LNAPL contamination is gasoline from leaking underground storage tanks (LUST). Heterogeneities in the media properties play a crucial role for defining the LNAPL movement and distribution in the subsurface. Hence, enhanced understanding of light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) …

The Effects Of An Educational Intervention On The Aging Knowlege Of Graduate Counseling Students, Damien Gent Dotson May 2012

The Effects Of An Educational Intervention On The Aging Knowlege Of Graduate Counseling Students, Damien Gent Dotson

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to test the effects of an educational intervention on the aging knowledge of graduate counseling students. Overcoming misconceptions, such as positive and negative stereotypes about older adults, is essential for graduate counseling students to be effectively trained to work with the aging population. Educational interventions have been found to be the most consistently effective way of increasing aging knowledge and helping individuals overcome ageist beliefs rooted in faulty aging knowledge. For this study, it was hypothesized that a comprehensive educational intervention (approximately 2 hours in duration) would increase overall aging knowledge, increase aging and …

Giving Students The Reins: Taking Advantage Of Service-Learning's Potential As A Pedagogy For Teaching Writing, Tereza Joy Kramer May 2012

Giving Students The Reins: Taking Advantage Of Service-Learning's Potential As A Pedagogy For Teaching Writing, Tereza Joy Kramer

Dissertations

Service-learning helps students experience the practical applications of learning to write well; it also offers opportunities for students to develop a sense of civic responsibility. Although service-learning is growing in popularity, this pedagogy is not prevalent in English departments. Additionally, service-learning courses across all disciplines typically do not empower students to make their own project decisions. Given these tendencies, it is useful to consider whether service-learning is an effective pedagogy for writing, whether students should be designing their own projects, and what writing instructors could do to facilitate students' growth as writers while completing projects in the community. This is …
