Conflicts Associated With Exempt Wells: A Spaghetti Western Water War, Megan A. Vinett, Todd Jarvis
Conflicts Associated With Exempt Wells: A Spaghetti Western Water War, Megan A. Vinett, Todd Jarvis
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
The saga over exempt wells in the western United States and Canada epitomizes a new type of water conflict – a spaghetti-western water war. The political melodrama stars local governments to serve as sheriff of water-supply planning duties. Exempt wells number in the millions, and herding the growing numbers is testing the mettle of the states and provinces responsible for the management, allocation, and protection of natural resources. The separation of laws governing ground water and surface water, coupled with changes in geography and geology within a jurisdiction, compound the administrative riddle and give rise to a broad spectrum of …

Eco-Theatre And New Media: Devising Toward Transnational Balance, Marnie Jane Glazier
Eco-Theatre And New Media: Devising Toward Transnational Balance, Marnie Jane Glazier
Dissertations
This dissertation seeks to address the pivotal ecological and technological realities of the twenty-first century, currently giving rise to new patterns of existence and new paradigms of human inquiry. This study will ask how technological innovation and environmental urgency have altered the ways in which human beings think, and thus perceive the world around them, changing human behavior, or non-behavior, and calling forth new imperatives for the arts, and namely for the Theatre. Most significantly, the dissertation attempts to traverse the shadow-lands, between our ecologies and our technologies, exploring those essential points of convergence in the borderlands where Eco-Theatre and …

Graphene Membranes As Electron Transparent Windows For Environmental Spectroscopy And Microscopy, Joshua D. Stoll
Graphene Membranes As Electron Transparent Windows For Environmental Spectroscopy And Microscopy, Joshua D. Stoll
Theses
A methodology was developed for isolation and transfer of 1-4 monolayer graphene from both Cu and Ni foil and Ni/SiO2/Si layered substrate types for use as electron transparent windows in environmental electron microscopy and spectroscopy. The graphene membranes were transferred onto disc "frames" made of stainless steel containing 3-10 μm diameter apertures. Such frames "windowed" with the graphene membrane are assembled into the custom designed environmental cell (e-cell) which contain a specimen immersed in the desired liquid or gaseous environment, and are compatible for imaging with a conventional scanning electron microscope (SEM) (in this case, a Hitachi 4500 SEM). Gold …
Narratives Of Abuse: A Glimpse Into The Lives Of Battered Women And The Making Of The Film, In The Eyes Of Others, Elisa Herrmann
Narratives Of Abuse: A Glimpse Into The Lives Of Battered Women And The Making Of The Film, In The Eyes Of Others, Elisa Herrmann
Theses
The thesis film In the Eyes of Others is the result of three-years of research on viewers' fascination with horror films, Brazil televisions' seeming non-stop broadcast of news about crimes of passion, and my study of the link between crimes of passion and domestic violence. The film tells the story of Amanda and Jack, a battered woman and her abusive husband, who, in the eyes of others, seem like the perfect couple. By showing one of the possible tragic outcomes of a life where violence against women is hidden from the eyes of society, my goal with In the Eyes …
