Case Studies On Water Security: Analysis Of System Complexity And The Role Of Institutions, Jacob D. Petersen-Perlman, Jennifer C. Veilleux, Matthew Zentner, Aaron T. Wolf
Case Studies On Water Security: Analysis Of System Complexity And The Role Of Institutions, Jacob D. Petersen-Perlman, Jennifer C. Veilleux, Matthew Zentner, Aaron T. Wolf
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Water security is a challenge faced within many transboundary river basins. Identifying the resilient factors within a system may reduce water security concerns and enhance cooperation. In this paper, we are examining the dimensions of resilience as influenced by the rate of change and institutional capacity within river basins. Three case studies are analyzed for their water security capacity, including resilience and vulnerability, as well as institutional capacity.

Sustained Dialogue For Ground Water And Energy Resources In Chile, Suzanne A. Pierce, Reed A. Malin, Eugenio Figueroa
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Water conflict arises in interconnected ways. As demand increases in one region or industrial sector, the accompanying shifts in water resource management regimes have impacts at the local level and may carry international implications. Insecure water resources are often the root cause of resistance or social conflict across many political and economic sectors. Integrated Water Resources Management is an emerging transdisciplinary approach to science-based water management that attempts to account for these cross sector effects. This paper presents a case study of Integrated Water Resources Managment methods applied in the El Tatio Geothermal Field basin of northern Chile where tensions …

The Past, Present, And Future Of Water Conflict And International Security, David K. Kreamer
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Water stress and scarcity has affected, and will continue to affect, the stability of communities. An overview of global water security challenges indicates profound difficulties and potential flashpoints. There are many examples of struggles in supplying clean water throughout the world, and how water has been both a strategic tool and object of conflict in the past. Water has been an instrument of ethnic and religious conflict, and has recently been used in regional and local clashes. Transboundary water disputes are also potentially dangerous in several regions of the world and stresses from climate change and variability increase the uncertainty …

Selling Nostalgia: Mad Men, Postmodernism And Neoliberalism, Deborah Tudor
Selling Nostalgia: Mad Men, Postmodernism And Neoliberalism, Deborah Tudor
Global Cinema
The neoliberal cultural mode of postmodernity reduces history to a set of discourses with the concomitant assertion that the individual’s knowledge of the real emerges from an engagement with images of the real The economic structures of neoliberalism encourage rugged individualism and self-reliance, and assert a spurious gender equality. The contemporary series Mad Men is situated in media-derived nostalgia and demonstrates how audiences read the past through the postmodern, neoliberal discourse of style. These readings encourage an ahistorical understanding of gender and class that reinforces neoliberal suppression of people as members of political classes.
Examining User-Created Description In The Archival Profession, Matthew J. Gorzalski
Examining User-Created Description In The Archival Profession, Matthew J. Gorzalski
Articles
Interest in user created metadata has increased in recent years. In 2009-2010 the RLG Partner Social Metadata Working Group examined the social metadata practices of libraries, archives, and museums worldwide. They found that more than half of studied institutions improve metadata with user created description. This article presents the results of a survey conducted in January-February 2013 on the social metadata practices of North American archival and special collections repositories. To what extent are archives allowing users to provide descriptive metadata using Web 2.0 technologies? Is user generated content integrated into finding aids, catalog records, or other authoritative metadata record? …

More Than Primary Sources: Teaching About The Archival Profession As A Method Of K-12 Outreach, Eleanor Dickson, Matthew J. Gorzalski
Articles
Traditional archival outreach methods for K-12 students teach children how to be historians-not archivists-by emphasizing critical thinking skills and document analysis. In contrast, K-12 outreach in the field of archaeology simultaneously emphasizes archaeological work, historical analysis, and critical thinking. This article examines both the archival and archaeological K-12 outreach models and draws from one author's experiences at The History Center in Diboll, Texas, to suggest changes to archival K-12 outreach that will leverage the profession's preexisting interactions with students to advocate for archives.
