Artificial Sinks: Opportunities And Challenges For Managing Offsite Nitrogen Losses, Arthur J. Gold, Kelly Addy, Mark B. David, Louis A. Schipper, Brian A. Needelman
Artificial Sinks: Opportunities And Challenges For Managing Offsite Nitrogen Losses, Arthur J. Gold, Kelly Addy, Mark B. David, Louis A. Schipper, Brian A. Needelman
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Advanced control measures are needed after nitrogen (N) leaves agricultural fields and begins to flow through a catchment. Bioreactors "“ simple, wood-chip filled trenches "“ and constructed wetlands afford additional treatment to reduce N from agricultural lands, but their success requires informed adoption and placement. Rates of N removal in field studies of bioreactors vary based on carbon substrate, hydrologic setting, temperature, N loading and hydraulic residence time. From limited measures in constructed wetlands, N removal can be substantial and influenced by seasonality. Additional research is needed to understand uncertainty and variability associated with these systems. Further synthesis of data …

Water Resources For Algae-Based Biofuels, Jalal Rastegary, Saeid Aghahossein Shirazi, Tracy Fernandez, Abbas Ghassemi
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Adequate energy and available water resources are two of the major requirements for sustaining human progress, yet modern society faces volatile energy availability, prices, and environmental concerns, as well as shortages of drinking water in many parts of the world. Alternative energy produced from biomass such as algae has great potential to utilize sources of water not suitable for consumption. A factorial experiment with CRD (Complete Randomized Design) arrangement was conducted using three growth media: geothermal water, Bold's Basal Medium (BBM), and combination of 50 percent BBM + 50 percent geothermal water. The experiments were conducted utilizing three combinations of …

Popular Education For Water Sustainability: Three Lessons From Reflective Practice, Peter Oliver, William C. Dennison
Popular Education For Water Sustainability: Three Lessons From Reflective Practice, Peter Oliver, William C. Dennison
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Between them, the authors of this paper have over sixty years experience in water education working in primary and secondary schools, universities, field study centres, professional development programs; and with community, industry, and government groups, focusing on coastal zones and catchments. Over the last three years, they have undertaken a systematic process of personal and dialogic reflection and deliberation on this experience, particularly in the area of popular education. This paper presents three key water education lessons gained from this iterative process and provides examples to justify the sagacity of this choice. First and foremost, popular water educators really need …
Participatory Learning And Popular Education Strategies For Water Education, Bruce Missingham
Participatory Learning And Popular Education Strategies For Water Education, Bruce Missingham
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
This paper presents some experiences of bringing critical pedagogy and participatory learning approaches into postgraduate university classrooms in teaching about water and sustainable development. Employing critical pedagogy and participatory approaches offer ways of escaping conventional lecture and tutorial approaches to pedagogy in university, strategies for incorporating and sharing student knowledge and experience, engaging students in the production of theory and knowledge (and not just their consumption), and problem-posing approaches that encourage critical thinking and creativity. First I discuss the need to break away from conventional university teaching approaches and the usefulness of critical pedagogy and participatory perspectives that seek education …
