English Word And Pseudoword Spellings And Phonological Awareness: Detailed Comparisons From Three L1 Writing Systems, Katherine I. Martin, Emily Lawson, Kathryn Carpenter, Elisa Hummer
Articles
Spelling is a fundamental literacy skill facilitating word recognition and thus higher level reading abilities via its support for efficient text processing (Adams, 1990; Joshi et al., 2008; Perfetti and Stafura, 2014). However, relatively little work examines second language (L2) spelling in adults, and even less work examines learners from different first language (L1) writing systems. This is despite the fact that the influence of L1 writing system on L2 literacy skills is well documented (Hudson, 2007; Koda and Zehler, 2008; Grabe, 2009). To address this shortcoming, this study collected data on real word spelling, pseudoword spelling, and phonological awareness …

Innovating Sustainability Education Through The “Bird’S Eye” Perspective, Carly Kasicki
Innovating Sustainability Education Through The “Bird’S Eye” Perspective, Carly Kasicki
Honors Theses
Various disciplines were used to define sustainability through their lens and set an education space that integrated students into finding needed and creative solutions for the problems affecting their community. This was done through the creation of an University Honors course that took 13 students and put them into a class split into two parts: setting a base foundation of sustainability knowledge through learning the views and struggles of different disciplines every week and then building a sustainability project that caters to the needs of the community. This class was used to create an education experience that is responsive to …

Furthermore, a comprehensive description and analysis of programs designed for international teaching opportunities is included. These programs include but are not limited to the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) and the Peace Corps. …
“From Behind The Plow”: Agrarianism And Racial Uplift In African American Literature, 1881-1917, James O'Donoghue
“From Behind The Plow”: Agrarianism And Racial Uplift In African American Literature, 1881-1917, James O'Donoghue
Dissertations
My study challenges our current valorization of movement and flow in readings of African American literature. I do so through an exploration of the representations of the black agrarian masses who either choose to remain or could not afford the spectacular forms of escape to urban life which many essentialized as freedom. In the dramatic and pivotal decades following emancipation, African American leaders attempted to check the growing apartheid by the “combination” of diverse African American communities: North and South, professional and working class. This required that they move beyond the question of whether one was free or slave to …
Mathematical Literacy: A Case Study Of Pre-Service Teachers, Maria Gabriela Lopez Jaramillo
Mathematical Literacy: A Case Study Of Pre-Service Teachers, Maria Gabriela Lopez Jaramillo
Dissertations
This study addresses the question of whether or not pre-service teachers are ready and prepared to use and teach the highly-specialized language of each discipline. The disciplinary languages present teaching and learning challenges due to their lack of parallels in the daily language (Shanahan & Shanahan, 2008). Additionally, the languages of the disciplines are rarely taught and are commonly acquired through an isolated representation of words without a situated meaning within the theory (Gee, 2002). The knowledge of the particular ways of reading, writing, listening to, and talking in the content areas provides opportunities for students’ apprenticeship within the disciplines …
The U.S. Fossil Fuel Divestment Movement: Towards A Justice-Based Paradigm Of Sustainability At Higher Education Institutions, Dylan John Gibson
The U.S. Fossil Fuel Divestment Movement: Towards A Justice-Based Paradigm Of Sustainability At Higher Education Institutions, Dylan John Gibson
Theses
In the last ten years, the fossil fuel divestment movement at higher education institutions has emerged as a key component of the global climate movement. It has also posed a challenge to the dominant paradigm of sustainability in higher education by calling on institutions to help incite outward systemic change to ensure justice for those most impacted by environmental problems, rather than simple efforts to green the campus. As the movement sees a resurgent escalation in the U.S., this study uses data from active and inactive campaigns across the country to assess the key characteristics of institutions and campaigns that …
Institutions As The Main Determinant Of Economic Development: With A Focus On Economic Freedom Index As Proxies, Aizat Yasmin
Institutions As The Main Determinant Of Economic Development: With A Focus On Economic Freedom Index As Proxies, Aizat Yasmin
Theses
This paper hopes to serve as a primer, firstly for this Author, regarding the concept of Institutional Economics; a foundation and an enabling environment, which allows economics to function and to be free. Firstly, we focus on the topic of institutions within the scope of economic development, and ask the simple question, “Why some countries are poor, and why some countries are rich?” In terms of set up, this paper is guided by Dani Rodrik & Arvind Subramanian’s 2003 article, “The Primacy of Institutions (and what this does and does not mean).” I looked at how institutions, market openness and …

Social Media For Social Change: The Role Of Nonprofit Organizations On Mental Health, Samantha Patterson
Research Papers
The Hispanic/Latino population, the fastest-growing minority population in the United States faces barriers to access mental health care. This study explores how nonprofit organizations focusing on mental health are using mass and social media platforms to communicate with supporters of their patients including donors and the general public. Social media channels such as Facebook and LinkedIn have been used as a way to connect, educate and bring awareness to health-related topics. This research paper aims to study how non-profit organizations are supporting mental issues, which is a growing problem among the ethnic groups particularly the Hispanic/Latino population and plan an …
Law And Development In The United States: A Nexus With Civil Rights, Yong-Shik Lee
Law And Development In The United States: A Nexus With Civil Rights, Yong-Shik Lee
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Several decades have passed since the civil rights movement began. The movement achieved historic success owing to the efforts of so many who dedicated their lives to the call of justice and equality. This remarkable success has led to an improved society that accords the legal protection of equal rights among different races, genders, and ethnic groups. Despite this important achievement, we still have a long way to fulfilling the full promise of the civil rights movement, which at its core lies the protection and promotion of equity and dignity of all people.

An Invasion Of Privacy: Genetic Testing In An Age Of Unlimited Access, Najla Hasic
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
This Note discusses how privacy rights are implicated when direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic testing companies disclose an individual’s genetic information to law enforcement officers—often without any warrant or legal procedures required—who then use that data to implicate an individual’s family members in crimes.
After a brief introduction, Part II of this Note discusses DNA, what it is, and how it is used and tested by both state and private actors. It also provides a brief history of the Fourth Amendment with a specific focus on its application in jurisprudence as technology advances and privacy rights diminish. Finally, an overview of current …

Reduced And Earlier Snowmelt Runoff Impacts Traditional Irrigation Systems, Yining Bai, Alexander Fernald, Vincent Tidwell, Thushara Gunda
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Seasonal runoff from montane uplands is crucial for plant growth in agricultural communities of northern New Mexico. These communities typically employ traditional irrigation systems, called acequias, which rely mainly upon spring snowmelt runoff for irrigation. The trend of the past few decades is an increase in temperature, reduced snow pack, and earlier runoff from snowmelt across much of the western United States. In order to predict the potential impacts of changes in future climate a system dynamics model was constructed to simulate the surface water supplies in a montane upland watershed of a small irrigated community in northern New Mexico …

Simple Approaches To Examine Economic Impacts Of Water Reallocations From Agriculture, Ashley K. Bickel, Dari Duval, George B. Frisvold
Simple Approaches To Examine Economic Impacts Of Water Reallocations From Agriculture, Ashley K. Bickel, Dari Duval, George B. Frisvold
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Facing an anticipated shortage declaration on the Colorado River and reductions in surface water for agricultural use, rural stakeholder groups are concerned about how water cutbacks will affect their local economies. Local farm groups and county governments often lack the analytical tools to measure such impacts. While one can learn much from large-scale hydro-economic models, data, cost, and time limitations have been barriers to such model development. This article introduces three basic modeling approaches, using relatively low-cost and accessible data, to examine local economic impacts of water reallocations from agriculture. An empirical application estimates the effect of agricultural water reductions …
A Review Of Water Resources Education In Geography Departments In The United States, Mike Pease, Philip L. Chaney, Joseph Hoover
A Review Of Water Resources Education In Geography Departments In The United States, Mike Pease, Philip L. Chaney, Joseph Hoover
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Geographers have long played an important role in water resources scholarship; however, academic literature has not focused on the teaching contributions of geographers in this area. To address this gap, we cataloged courses taught and faculty interests for geography departments in the United States with a stated focus on water resources. We identified 129 departments with both courses and faculty having water resources expertise. The majority of water-related courses focused on climatology or climate change, suggesting that students are regularly provided opportunities to learn about water topics primarily through the lens of climatology and water resources. We also summarize a …

African Americans, currently over-represented among low SES groups, have been found to be among the most at risk groups for obesity and type 2 diabetes. Phenotypic expression, such as obesity, result from the combined effect of genetic inheritance and environmental influences. Environmental dynamics interact with individuals on micro, meso and ecto levels (Bronfrenbrenner, 1989), are diverse and cultural (Vygotsky, 1993) and are learned by individuals through modeling and observation (Bandura, 1989). Environmental factors such as parental influence and modeling, availability and accessibility of produce, sweetened drinks and fast foods, can contribute to or minimize the onset of obesity and type …

Using Serious Games To Facilitate Collaborative Water Management Planning Under Climate Extremes, Deborah J. Bathke, Tonya Haigh, Tonya Bernadt, Nicole Wall, Harvey Hill, Andrea Carson
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Sustainable management is a complex process that involves balancing the competing interests of the human, plant, and animal communities that depend on watershed resources. It involves developing and implementing plans, programs, and projects that sustain and enhance watershed functions while taking into account the natural, social, political, economic, and institutional factors operating within the watershed and other relevant regions. Examples of such factors include crosscutting mandates by different levels of government, conflicting objectives across sectors, and the constraints and uncertainty of the availability and accessibility of the resources within the watershed. One way to address these complexities is with public …

Developing Water Leaders As Catalysts For Change: The Nebraska Water Leaders Academy, Mark E. Burbach, Connie Reimers-Hild
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Managing water resources is increasingly complex and dynamic. Sustaining freshwater ecosystem services in the face of increasing challenges and emerging threats is a supreme leadership challenge. Leadership development program designers should look to social science theories and methods to prepare leaders to catalyze the change necessary to meet future challenges. This paper provides evidence that a new generation of water leaders is needed; and correspondingly, there is a need for new leadership development programs. The Nebraska Water Leaders Academy and its evaluation is presented as a case study of a successful program training leaders in social science-based skills in order …
Population Genetics Of Rice Rats (Oryzomys Palustris) At The Northern Edge Of The Species Range, Phillip Conrad Williams
Population Genetics Of Rice Rats (Oryzomys Palustris) At The Northern Edge Of The Species Range, Phillip Conrad Williams
Theses
The marsh rice rat (Oryzomys sp.) is a semiaquatic rodent native to wetlands in the southeastern United States. The northwestern-most part of the rice rat’s range extends to Illinois where rice rats are found in wetlands across the southern part of the state. Recent studies have shown that rice rats in the United States can be divided into two species: O. palustris and O. texensis, but the taxonomic status of rice rats in Southern Illinois is unclear. To resolve this, I sequenced cytochrome-b and the control region, two regions of mitochondrial DNA, for 16 rice rats and constructed a phylogeny …
Social Media Footprints Of Public Perception On Energy Issues In The Conterminous United States, David Leifer
Social Media Footprints Of Public Perception On Energy Issues In The Conterminous United States, David Leifer
Theses
Energy has been at the top of the national and global political agenda along with other concomitant challenges, such as poverty, disaster and climate change. Social perception on various energy issues, such as its availability, development and consumption deeply affect our energy future. This type of information is traditionally collected through structured energy surveys. However, these surveys are often subject to formidable costs and intensive labor, as well as a lack of temporal dimensions. Social media can provide a more cost-effective solution to collect massive amount of data on public opinions in a timely manner that may complement the survey. …
Economic Value Of Preemergence Herbicides In Soybeans, Connor Klingele
Economic Value Of Preemergence Herbicides In Soybeans, Connor Klingele
Research Papers
With the widespread epidemic of herbicide resistance in weeds, and relatively low cash market prices, the economic sustainability of weed management programs in soybeans is of critical importance. Growers in Southern Illinois and across the Midwest face a wide variety of competitive weeds, with some populations expressing resistance to multiple herbicides, which can make it difficult and costly to select an effective herbicide program. Over-reliance on broad-spectrum herbicides such as glyphosate has helped to create this shift in herbicide resistant weeds. Utilizing data collected in southern Illinois during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons by Matt Geiger, we will test …
Iwrm And The Nexus Approach: Versatile Concepts For Water Resources Education, Neil S. Grigg
Iwrm And The Nexus Approach: Versatile Concepts For Water Resources Education, Neil S. Grigg
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and the nexus approach are tools to identify solutions for water problems across interdependent sectors with interacting social and natural systems. Although both tools aim at solutions for complex water issues using an interdisciplinary approach, IWRM is a management process and the nexus approach is a systems tool to characterize problems. By clarifying their attributes and providing examples, instructors can use them to explain broad social problems and offer practical frameworks for problem-solving. Given their breadth, IWRM and the nexus approach can seem vague and attract criticism, but if they are replaced, the need for …
Price Determinants Of Recreational Land In Illinois, Cameron Hupp
Price Determinants Of Recreational Land In Illinois, Cameron Hupp
Research Papers
It’s no secret that Illinois farmland is extremely expensive and has been on a steady rise for the past several decades. The highly sought after features of many different pieces of Illinois farmland coupled with the favorable growing climate found in Illinois translates to advantageous yields and potential for substantial revenues for farmers and landowners. Although prices have remained relatively stagnant throughout the past few years, it can be inferred that the long-term trend of farmland value will continue its path trending upward. With this being said, the margin for profit will become even slimmer and the ag real estate …
