A Geographic Approach To Place And Natural Resource Use In Local Food Systems, Leslie Duram, Lydia Oberholtzer
A Geographic Approach To Place And Natural Resource Use In Local Food Systems, Leslie Duram, Lydia Oberholtzer
Publications
This article illuminates the geographic concept of ‘place’ in local foods. Because the social aspects of local food have been more fully addressed in previous literature, this review focuses instead on the ecological aspects of farming and food. First, the literature on natural resource use in agriculture provides contextual understanding of water use, biodiversity, soils and agro-ecological methods. The complex relationship between climate change and agriculture is described and models assessing the impacts of climate change on agriculture are detailed. The geography of local food is specifically addressed by describing methods for assessing natural resource use in local food, including …

Advocacy Group Activity In The New Media Environment, David Karpf
2010
This paper presents an analysis of early data from the newly-launched Membership Communications Project (MCP). The MCP is a data-aggregation effort concerned with tracking the email practices of progressive advocacy organizations in American politics. Based on 2.5 months of data collection across 70 organizations (998 messages in total), the goal of the paper is twofold. First, the paper establishes the purpose behind and construction of the MCP dataset, offering an “annotated user’s manual” of sorts for interested members of the research community. Data collection will continue for at least six months, and the dataset is freely available to other researchers. …
Regionalization Via Network-Constrained Clustering, David Sparks
Regionalization Via Network-Constrained Clustering, David Sparks
2010
Application of a network-constrained clustering technique, which derives partitions based on observed variables and network structure. Here, I identify discrete political regions within the United States, based on presidential voting by county.
Making The Significant Significant: A Discourse Analysis Examining The Teacher's Role In Negotiating Meaning Of Text With Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students, Keith Standiford Wheeler
Making The Significant Significant: A Discourse Analysis Examining The Teacher's Role In Negotiating Meaning Of Text With Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students, Keith Standiford Wheeler
Dissertations
This study reports data from a three-month discourse analysis of a fifth-grade teacher`s language used to negotiate meaning of text with linguistically and culturally diverse students. Specifically, I use Gee`s (2005) discourse analysis methodology to examine the teacher`s language-in-use for seven building tasks of language--significance, activities, identities, relationships, politics (the distribution of social goods), connections, and sign systems and knowledge--in a micro level analysis for eight teaching episodes covering reading and/or social studies instruction. In doing so, I conceptualize categories and subcategories of language use for each of the language building tasks. I find that the teacher used instructional language …

TITLE: EFFECTS OF ENROLLMENT IN CO-TEACHING CLASSES ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WITHOUT DISABILITIES MAJOR PROFESSOR: D. John McIntyre, Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, Ed.D., University of Syracuse This study examined the impact of enrollment in co-teaching classes on the grades earned by high school students without disabilities. Attitudes Toward Hazaragi, Abedin Jamal
Attitudes Toward Hazaragi, Abedin Jamal
Theses
This study examined the attitudes of young educated Hazaras towards Hazaragi, a politically low-prestigious language spoken in Afghanistan. The instrument included a questionnaire made of Attitude questions and Descriptive questions. The respondents expressed their beliefs about the linguistic entity of Hazaragi, desire to maintain Hazaragi, value of Hazaragi, and domains of use of Hazaragi. The results showed that half of the Hazaras who participated in the study considered Hazaragi to be a language whereas the other half did not. The majority of the participants demonstrated a commitment to maintain Hazaragi and to speak Hazaragi. With regards to domains of use, …

Constraints To Water Transfers In Unadjudicated Basins: The Middle Rio Grande As A Case Study, Michael Pease Pease
Constraints To Water Transfers In Unadjudicated Basins: The Middle Rio Grande As A Case Study, Michael Pease Pease
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Water reallocations are contentious under the best of circumstances. When a basin lacks a comprehensive adjudication of water rights, the levels of legal and economic complexity and controversy intensify. This paper evaluates the Middle Rio Grande, a region of New Mexico that would seem an ideal location for water markets as the need to reallocate water between existing uses is high. Due to the lack of an adjudication, and other complicating factors such as the Endangered Species Act, proposed transfers require a complex evaluation system created by the New Mexico Office of the State Engineer. Even with this evaluation system …
The Dominant Water Estate And Water Reallocation, Olen Paul Matthews
The Dominant Water Estate And Water Reallocation, Olen Paul Matthews
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Different parts of the hydrologic cycle have been separated into different property rights regimes. With different property rules applying to the same water in different parts of the hydrologic cycle, management within a reallocation context can be confusing. If the water estate is made dominant and public, then the other property rules would be subservient to it. This does not mean private rights are precluded. They can be represented by a marketable permit. The dominant estate would allow for market and legislative reallocation. Management goals would be achieved through an adaptive management process.
Market Approaches To Water Allocation: Lessons From Latin America, Carl Bauer Bauer
Market Approaches To Water Allocation: Lessons From Latin America, Carl Bauer Bauer
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Latin American experiences with water markets offer lessons to the U.S. because they have emerged in different political and economic contexts. The Western U.S. experience has been longer and has defined some of the world's classic cases of market allocation of water. These cases, however, have been driven by domestic factors and have evolved within domestic social and institutional contexts, which are easy for people in the U.S. to take for granted. Looking at Chile and Mexico can help us see Western U.S. water allocation with fresh eyes. These Latin American cases have been strongly influenced by international theories and …
