Acequias And The Effects Of Climate Change, Albert Rango, Alexander Fernald, Caitriana Steele, Brian Hurd, Carlos Ochoa Feb 2014

Acequias And The Effects Of Climate Change, Albert Rango, Alexander Fernald, Caitriana Steele, Brian Hurd, Carlos Ochoa

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Traditional forms of acequia irrigation can be combined with ground based and remote sensing snow measurements and snowmelt runoff modeling to better estimate runoff volumes now and in the future under conditions of climate change. The experience gained over 400 years of irrigating small fields strongly binds communities and strengthens the resolve of acequia associations to contest challenges presented by climate change. Increased density of snow measurements in high elevations of the Rio Grande along with input of real-time data to snowmelt models has led to an improved potential for acequia decision making under the increased temperatures projected for the …

Suitability Assessment Of Non-Potable Water To Meet The Electricity Generation Demands In 2030, Katie Zemlick, Vincent C. Tidwell, Barry L. Roberts, Cesar R. Castillo Feb 2014

Suitability Assessment Of Non-Potable Water To Meet The Electricity Generation Demands In 2030, Katie Zemlick, Vincent C. Tidwell, Barry L. Roberts, Cesar R. Castillo

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Large amounts of water are required for electricity generation, and demand for thermoelectric power is predicted to increase significantly over the next several decades. Of concern, is that nearly half of this new demand is in regions currently subject to fresh water shortages due to over-appropriation, drought, and climatic drivers. This study explores the suitability of using non-traditional sources of water, namely wastewater and brackish ground water for future thermoelectric cooling in 22 continental Electricity Market Module Regions. Both sources pose unique financial, technical, and management challenges, but are widely available and in the majority of instances economically feasible. While …

Environmental Aquatic Resource Sensing: Basic Sciences, Business Education, And Outreach, Laura G. Leff, Darren L. Bade, Jonathan Scaffidi, Craig E. Williamson, Chris Woolverton

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Freshwater resources are critical features of the landscape and are threatened by many phenomena (e.g., eutrophication, invasive species, climate change, acid rain). The importance of fresh waters requires that scientists continually improve their tactics and technologies for broader understanding. Increasing use of automated sensors to collect environmental data creates a need for training of environmental scientists. In this paper, we present case studies based on a doctoral training program. For each case study presented, the goals and overall recommendations for adaptation to other programs are discussed. Case studies were selected based on recommendations of external evaluators of the program, the …

Most doctoral programs in the U.S. remain “stove-piped” in traditional single-discipline fields, while scientific progress increasingly occurs at the boundaries between multiple disciplines. In response, the U.S. National Science Foundation has been funding projects in Integrative Graduate Education, Research, and Training (IGERT) to train a new generation of interdisciplinary scientists. The IGERT Ph.D. program in “Watershed Science and Policy” at Southern Illinois University (SIU) builds each year's student class as a diverse “cadre” who work intensively together on one hot-button river basin. The structure of these projects, and other program elements, are reviewed here along with successes and challenges to …

Participatory Learning And Popular Education Strategies For Water Education, Bruce Missingham

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

This paper presents some experiences of bringing critical pedagogy and participatory learning approaches into postgraduate university classrooms in teaching about water and sustainable development. Employing critical pedagogy and participatory approaches offer ways of escaping conventional lecture and tutorial approaches to pedagogy in university, strategies for incorporating and sharing student knowledge and experience, engaging students in the production of theory and knowledge (and not just their consumption), and problem-posing approaches that encourage critical thinking and creativity. First I discuss the need to break away from conventional university teaching approaches and the usefulness of critical pedagogy and participatory perspectives that seek education …

New Learning Foundations For Building Water Knowledge Bridges, Jeff Camkin, Susana Neto Jan 2014

New Learning Foundations For Building Water Knowledge Bridges, Jeff Camkin, Susana Neto

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Five regional meetings promoted by UNESCO in 2009 addressed the growing need for transdisciplinary approaches, holistic vision, incorporation of non-formal knowledge and views, effective participation and bottom-up action for identification of water problems and solutions. There is, however, a general context of tension and competition between specializations within different disciplines, and without specialization it is difficult to obtain formal and academic recognition. This paper presents insights into new co-learning methodologies centred in the experience of participants, inspired by and adapting the pedagogic approach developed by Paulo Freire, to the context of water management educational needs. This innovative approach has been …

Promoting A Shared Vision: Identifying Intersections Between Food And Fiber Systems Literacy Benchmarks And Illinois State Board Of Education Standards, Daniel P. Ingold Mr.

Research Papers

Understanding of agricultural systems has been an accepted and necessary aspect of a child’s education for centuries. Conventional agricultural education has proven effective in creating well-trained agricultural professionals and scholars, but has had the unintentional effect of limiting access to agricultural concepts to the non-agricultural student. This effect has potentially negative cultural consequences considering the importance agricultural issues. In response, agricultural educators have carried out an initiative to promote agricultural literacy in the classroom through an integration of agricultural concepts into core curriculum. A Guide to Food and Fiber Systems Literacy Benchmarks (Leising, 1998) is an example of programs that …

The Legitimacy Of Selected Watershed Organizations In The Midwestern United States, Bruce Martin Hall Dec 2013

The Legitimacy Of Selected Watershed Organizations In The Midwestern United States, Bruce Martin Hall

Dissertations

Legitimacy in natural resource management refers to the degree to which citizens accept and comply with stated goals and policies. Lack of legitimacy can threaten collaborative-based watershed groups that rely on voluntary compliance to achieve their water quality goals. These groups are locally-based, and sprouted up due to the complexities and political barriers that have prevented better control of non-point, or diffuse, pollution off the landscape and into streams and lakes. One of the most cited requirements for legitimacy in natural resource collaborations is inclusive representation. An exploratory study of several watershed groups in Wisconsin and Illinois uncovered a worrisome …

Sustainability Curriculum Inventory And Literacy Assessment: The Influence Of Values On Knowledge Of And Perceived Importance Of Sustainability Components, David James Drogos Dec 2013

Sustainability Curriculum Inventory And Literacy Assessment: The Influence Of Values On Knowledge Of And Perceived Importance Of Sustainability Components, David James Drogos

Theses

The incorporation of sustainability education and sustainable practices in higher education serves several purposes. It prepares students for work in sustainability-focused professions, fosters environmentally responsible behavior in individuals, and helps to reduce the ecological impacts of the operational aspects of educational institutions. However, contemporary definitions of sustainability, which consider social, political, ecological, and economic influences on the environment, complicate educational initiatives. Distinct educational departments often consider sustainability through their specialized lens. Trans-disciplinary initiative must be enacted in order for sustainability education to reach its full potential. This paper outlines the results of an electronically administered faculty sustainability curriculum inventory as …

A Model Of Contaminant Transport, Saline Valley Aquifer, Gallatin County Illinois, Ryan William Cox Dec 2013

A Model Of Contaminant Transport, Saline Valley Aquifer, Gallatin County Illinois, Ryan William Cox

Theses

The Saline Valley Conservancy District (SVCD) formed in 1980 to provide a stable source of water to many communities in Southern Illinois. The SVCD well field located in the thickest, most productive region of the Saline Valley Aquifer lies directly adjacent to a reclaimed coal mine. Subsurface movement and surface discharge from the mine has been shown to be responsible for deterioration of water quality in the surrounding area, including the aquifer. Previous studies conducted in the region have addressed water supply issues and simulated contaminant transport from the reclaimed mine. The limited scope of these models did not extend …

The Four Year Experience: Career Search Self-Efficacy Of New Graduates, Heather Maietta Sep 2013

The Four Year Experience: Career Search Self-Efficacy Of New Graduates, Heather Maietta

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

Abstract

The author examines the relationship between the degree of participation in a mandatory, credit-bearing, four-year career development program and career search self-efficacy of college graduates using the Career Search Efficacy Scale (CSES). Solberg, Good, & Nord (1994) define career search self-efficacy as an individuals’ efficacy expectations regarding their ability to perform important activities associated with career search and selection. Descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlations, and regression analyses were performed. Results indicated there was a relationship between participation in a career development program and career search self-efficacy. Discussion of findings and recommendations for future research are provided.
