A Noble Dream: The Inter-American Studies Program At Southern Illinois University, Carbondale (1958-1985), Colin T. White

Honors Theses

This essay explores the rise and fall of the Inter-American studies program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The Inter-American Studies Program attempted to bridge two distinctive bodies of academic literature when Dr. Albert Bork first envisioned it. Unlike other programs founded in the 1950s, SIU’s Inter-American Studies program was an academic experiment challenging that emerging trend. Regardless of its failure, the program’s original idea was innovative.

Globalized Backlash: Women Against Feminism’S New Media Matrix Of (Anti) Feminist Testimony, Margarethe Mapes May 2016

Globalized Backlash: Women Against Feminism’S New Media Matrix Of (Anti) Feminist Testimony, Margarethe Mapes

Dissertations

Feminisms are oftentimes confronted with dissonance, resistance, and backlash. Invested in criticizing the cultural and institutional emergence of patriarchy and calls to re-order structures of inequality make feminism threatening to status quo power dynamics. “Women Against Feminism”—a social media phenomenon and space for women to post anti-feminist messages—began gaining notoriety in 2013. By 2015, “Women Against Feminism” expanded to multiple social media platforms, gained thousands of anti-feminist submissions, and received ample support and criticism across news outlets. This study explores “Women Against Feminism” as a potential site of 21st feminist backlash, noting nuanced rhetorical strategies that rely on fearing feminism, …

Changes In Health And Behavior During The Business Cycle, Mohammad Sediq Sameem May 2016

Changes In Health And Behavior During The Business Cycle, Mohammad Sediq Sameem

Dissertations

This dissertation considers to what extent changes in the unemployment rate – a proxy for the business cycle – drives changes in mortality and crime. I use a panel of U.S. counties from 1990 to 2013. I allow changes in the unemployment rate to have different effects upon mortality / crime in large versus small counties as well as between increases versus decreases in the unemployment rate. My results show great nuance along both these dimensions, suggesting that the effects of the business cycle are more subtle than what previous studies report. These results also give one greater insight into …

A Spatial Analysis Of The Relationship Between Obesity And The Built Environment In Southern Illinois, Shiloh Leah Deitz May 2016

A Spatial Analysis Of The Relationship Between Obesity And The Built Environment In Southern Illinois, Shiloh Leah Deitz

Theses

Scholars have established that our geographic environments – including infrastructure for walking and food availability - contribute to the current obesity epidemic in the United States. However, the relationship between food, walkability, and obesity has largely only been investigated in large urban areas. Further, many studies have not taken an in-depth look at the spatial fabric of walkability, food, and obesity. The purpose of this study was two-fold: 1) to explore reliable methods, using sociodemographic census data, for estimating obesity at the neighborhood level in one region of the U.S. made up of rural areas and small towns – southern …

Healthy Communities In Southern Illinois, Shiloh L. Deitz Apr 2016

Healthy Communities In Southern Illinois, Shiloh L. Deitz

The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)

Due to industrial and lifestyle changes, rural and small town areas are losing population and suffering economic hardship. These areas also suffer from the poorest health. However, most rural or small town residents also believe in the American Dream, revitalizing their local area, and preserving the small town or rural way of life. In this paper, I look at the relationship between obesity and local infrastructure – including walkability and access to healthy food – in southern Illinois. I then make suggestions for development policies for the region in the context of local public opinion.

Applying Aashe Stars To Examine Geography’S “Sense Of Place” In Sustainability Education, Makayla J. Bonney, Leslie A. Duram Apr 2016

Applying Aashe Stars To Examine Geography’S “Sense Of Place” In Sustainability Education, Makayla J. Bonney, Leslie A. Duram

Publications

Geography supports place-based inquiry for the learner, applying the old environmental adage of “think globally, act locally” to environmental problem solving. Many within and outside of the discipline of geography see it as a highly appropriate home for sustainability studies. Yet despite a history of human-environment education, place-based relevancy, and support from professional research or education organizations, studies show that geography does not always take a lead role in sustainability education. In the following, we revisit the contested histories of geography and sustainability education and show support for geography-led sustainability curriculum. The scope of this research is universities which have …

Perspectives On The Illinois Healthcare Delivery System Challenges, Structural Issues And Opportunities For Reform, Linda Baker Apr 2016

Perspectives On The Illinois Healthcare Delivery System Challenges, Structural Issues And Opportunities For Reform, Linda Baker

The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)

As fourth year students in the program, students at SIU School of Medicine have enrolled in classes at the Institute and have spent a rotation studying public policy choices that impact the delivery of health care services and the profession itself. The choices made by these public entities will have ramifications for physicians, nurses, administrative support staff and most importantly, for patients and their families. Students have studied state healthcare policy formation up-close and have learned a great deal about the forces and factors that shape their fields of study. Common to all students’ findings and much of the literature …

Developing Great Lakes Literacy And Stewardship Through A Nonformal Science Education Camp, Shari L. Dann, Brandon Schroeder Jan 2016

Developing Great Lakes Literacy And Stewardship Through A Nonformal Science Education Camp, Shari L. Dann, Brandon Schroeder

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Informal science education has received great attention nationally in recent years, however little has been included in the research or policy literature regarding camps as contexts for informal learning. This article first describes how a Great Lakes water resource education camp is based upon professional definitions of informal, nonformal and formal education. Next, we describe specific details of our long-running Michigan 4-H Great Lakes and Natural Resources Camp designed to foster teen leadership and watershed stewardship. The Camp utilizes research-based best practices in nonformal science education, Place Based Education, Great Lakes Literacy education, and environmental education, as we demonstrate through …

Surface-Atmosphere Moisture Interactions In The Frozen Ground Regions Of Eurasia, Trent Ford, Oliver W. Frauenfeld Jan 2016

Surface-Atmosphere Moisture Interactions In The Frozen Ground Regions Of Eurasia, Trent Ford, Oliver W. Frauenfeld

Publications

Climate models simulate an intensifying Arctic hydrologic cycle in response to climatic warming, however the role of surface-atmosphere interactions from degrading frozen ground is unclear in these projections. Using Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) data in high-latitude Eurasia, we examine long-term variability in surface-atmosphere coupling as represented by the statistical relationship between surface evaporative fraction (EF) and afternoon precipitation. Changes in EF, precipitation, and their statistical association are then related to underlying permafrost type and snow cover. Results indicate significant positive trends in July EF in the Central Siberian Plateau, corresponding to significant increases in afternoon precipitation. …

Disruptive Ambiguities: The Potentiality Of Jotería Critique In Communication Studies, Robert M. Gutierrez-Perez Dec 2015

Disruptive Ambiguities: The Potentiality Of Jotería Critique In Communication Studies, Robert M. Gutierrez-Perez

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Utilizing performative writing to interrogate the experiences of a queer Xicano male in the discipline of Communication Studies, this essay argues for specificity in dialogue with specificity to disrupt dominant and/or normalized power relations in Queer of Color Critique (QOCC) and beyond. After defining QOCC, the potentiality of jotería critique is offered as a decolonial queer praxis that focuses on hybridity, radical interconnectedness, and nonheteronormative mestiza/o sexual and gender subjectivities. Further, by embracing the ambiguities of hybridity and the politics of radical interconnectedness, Jotería communication studies is a nascent sub-discipline that works in the borderlands between …

Geographies Of Inequality: Urban Renewal And The Race, Gender, And Class Of Post-Katrina New Orleans, Shiloh L. Deitz, Kristen M. Barber Dec 2015

Geographies Of Inequality: Urban Renewal And The Race, Gender, And Class Of Post-Katrina New Orleans, Shiloh L. Deitz, Kristen M. Barber

Articles

In this paper, we address pressing questions on the perpetuation of race, gender, and class inequalities in ongoing restoration practices shaping the "New" New Orleans. We unpack federal and local efforts to rebuild and revitalize the city over the last ten years and map the geography of New Orleans at the neighborhood level both before and after the storm. We discuss how mismanaged resources, corrupt profit-taking, conflicts of interest for the stakeholders, and socially unconscious design conditioned a fiscally irresponsible and non-inclusive recovery. These efforts have pushed out already marginalized populations, resulted in the gentrification of historically African American neighborhoods, …

The Presidential Contests Of 1976-2012 And What They Mean For Who Will Win In 2016, John Jackson Dec 2015

The Presidential Contests Of 1976-2012 And What They Mean For Who Will Win In 2016, John Jackson

The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)

As the nation races into the 2016 presidential elections season, it is worthwhile to stop the headlong rush and take a look back and see what we may have learned from our recent history, specifically what that history can teach us about our presidential elections and their long-term impact on the political system, how public policy is made and the prospects for any party to be able to govern in modern America when the nation is so deeply divided by partisanship, ideology, geography, class and race.

Art Education In My Backyard: Creative Placemaking On An Urban Farm, Jodi Kushins Nov 2015

Art Education In My Backyard: Creative Placemaking On An Urban Farm, Jodi Kushins

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

An art educator describes how she used her knowledge and experience of artistic and educational initiatives that forefront collective activity in real world settings to transform her backyard into an urban farm with the help of friends and neighbors. She combines an autoethnographic account of her experiences, including original photographs, with research on conceptual artists, participatory culture, and creative placemaking to position her work as participatory environmental art education. The paper is organized around the major steps one undertakes in planting a garden – siting, amending, seeding, tending, and harvesting - to draw parallels between the processes of maintaining a …

Distinguishing Between Unorganized And Organized Convection When Examining Land-Atmosphere Relationships, Jessica K. Wang, Trent Ford, Steven M. Quiring Nov 2015

Distinguishing Between Unorganized And Organized Convection When Examining Land-Atmosphere Relationships, Jessica K. Wang, Trent Ford, Steven M. Quiring

Publications

In this study, the robustness of a previously developed classification system that categorizes convective thunderstorm events initiated during various synoptic and dynamic conditions is analyzed. This classification system was used to distinguish between organized and unorganized convection and then used to determine whether unorganized convection occurs preferentially over wet or dry soils. The focus is on 12 events that occurred in synoptically benign (SB) environments where the Great Plains low-level jet was not present (noLLJ), and whether these events were accurately classified as unorganized convection is evaluated. Although there is a small sample size, the results show that the classification …

After Oslo, A Paradigm Shift? Redefining Sovereignty, Responsibility And Self-Determination In Israel‐Palestine, Virginia Q. Tilley Oct 2015

After Oslo, A Paradigm Shift? Redefining Sovereignty, Responsibility And Self-Determination In Israel‐Palestine, Virginia Q. Tilley

Publications

Since the Oslo Accords were signed in the mid-1990s, conflict resolution regarding the Arab-Israeli conflict has been guided by two conjoined premises regarding: (1) the identity and right to self-determination of the two ‘peoples’ involved, Jewish and Palestinian-Arab; and (2) Israel’s sovereignty, or lack of it, in different portions of Mandate Palestine. Although these twin premises are now treated as givens, in tandem they have paradoxically proved ruinous to the well-being of civilians living under occupation by fostering futile notions that peace can be achieved through geographic partition to serve these two rival ethno-national state projects. This approach is fundamentally …

Water Diplomacy From A Duck's Perspective: Wildlife As Stakeholders In Water Management, Charles Van Rees, J. Michael Reed Aug 2015

Water Diplomacy From A Duck's Perspective: Wildlife As Stakeholders In Water Management, Charles Van Rees, J. Michael Reed

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Contemporary water management strategies call for the inclusion of ecological research in the decision-making process and emphasize environmentally sustainable management solutions. Most ecological information used in water management shares two problematic characteristics; 1) simplistic, phenomenological approaches and aggregated data that may not properly describe system behavior, and 2) a "zero-sum" perspective treating ecological water needs as constraints to management. We argue that the newly devised Water Diplomacy Framework (WDF) can help overcome these shortcomings. We also provide a simple and intuitive method for integrating ecological factors into the WDF. We suggest that treating ecological phenomena as "surrogate stakeholders" in water …

Nature Of Transboundary Water Conflicts: Issues Of Complexity And The Enabling Conditions For Negotiated Cooperation, Enamul Choudhury, Shafiqul Islam Aug 2015

Nature Of Transboundary Water Conflicts: Issues Of Complexity And The Enabling Conditions For Negotiated Cooperation, Enamul Choudhury, Shafiqul Islam

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Water access, demand, usage and management become complex due to the crossing of multiple boundaries: political, social and jurisdictional, as well as physical, ecological and biogeochemical. This paper focuses on a particular class of complex water problems: the allocation of transboundary water (TBW) among competing riparians with conflicting needs. The complexity in TBW allocation lies in the dynamic consequences of competition that arise from the interconnections and feedbacks among actors, processes and institutions operating in the knowledge and political communities. Consequently, many TBW allocation issues become contingent upon the dynamic changes that occur within the knowledge and political communities as …

Soil Moisture - Precipitation Coupling: Observations From The Oklahoma Mesonet And Underlying Phyiscal Mechanisms, Trent Ford, Anita D. Rapp, Steven M. Quiring, Jennifer Blake Aug 2015

Soil Moisture - Precipitation Coupling: Observations From The Oklahoma Mesonet And Underlying Phyiscal Mechanisms, Trent Ford, Anita D. Rapp, Steven M. Quiring, Jennifer Blake

Publications

Interactions between soil moisture and the atmosphere are driven by the partitioning of sensible and latent heating, through which soil moisture has been connected to atmospheric modifications that could potentially lead to the initiation of convective precipitation. The majority of previous studies linking the land surface to subsequent precipitation have used atmospheric reanalysis or model data sets. In this study, we link in situ observations of soil moisture from more than 100 stations in Oklahoma to subsequent unorganized afternoon convective precipitation. We use hourly next generation (NEXRAD) radar-derived precipitation to identify convective events, and then compare the location of precipitation …

Emergence Patterns Of Common Waterhemp And Palmer Amaranth In Southern Illinois, Lucas Xavier Franca Aug 2015

Emergence Patterns Of Common Waterhemp And Palmer Amaranth In Southern Illinois, Lucas Xavier Franca

Theses

The continued spread of glyphosate-resistant common waterhemp [Amaranthus tuberculatus (Moq.) Sauer (syn. rudis)] and Palmer amaranth [Amaranthus palmeri (S. Wats.)] have complicated weed control efforts in soybean and corn production in Illinois. A thorough understanding of the weed biology of these species is fundamental in developing effective weed management strategies. The determination of emergence patterns as well as the influence of tillage practices on soil microclimate and soil seed bank will allow control strategies to be implemented at the most effective timing. Field experiments were conducted in southern Illinois throughout the growing season of 2013 and 2014 on two separate …

Utopia And Human Culture: Alternative Communities Of Higher Learning In America, Eli Orner Kramer Aug 2015

Utopia And Human Culture: Alternative Communities Of Higher Learning In America, Eli Orner Kramer

Theses

In this thesis I explore the place of the actualized utopian American alternative community of higher learning within a philosophy of human culture. I carry out such a study in order to articulate a unifying description of movement; to find the “target” that orients the activity of actualized utopia, as opposed to a classificatory rule to define a mechanically determined utopian-object. Although these communities have varied in practice since the first generation of them were created in the mid-nineteenth century, I argue that they have played, and continue to play, a particular role in America. They imagine what a world …

Fundamentals Of Watershed Hydrology, Pamela J. Edwards, Karl W.J. Williard, Jon E. Schoonover Jul 2015

Fundamentals Of Watershed Hydrology, Pamela J. Edwards, Karl W.J. Williard, Jon E. Schoonover

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

This is a primer about hydrology, the science of water. Watersheds are the basic land unit for water resource management and their delineation, importance, and variation are explained and illustrated. The hydrologic cycle and its components (precipitation, evaporation, transpiration, soil water, groundwater, and streamflow) which collectively provide a foundation for how landscapes and water interact are discussed at length. Important hydrologic concepts and methods are described in detail but primarily within the context of forested watersheds since most of the nation's fresh water originates from forest lands. The contents of this paper are designed to provide fundamental hydrologic principles to …

Landscapes From The Road, Darren B. Schroeder May 2015

Landscapes From The Road, Darren B. Schroeder

Theses

LANDSCAPES FROM THE ROAD In this paper I will discuss the images from Landscapes From The Road and how they function within a canon of landscape. I will discuss these images in relation to traditional romantic and pastoral constructs of landscape as well as the ways in which the images formulate landscape as uniquely and materialistically contemporary. I will discuss landscape as a concept related to the contemplation of the Sublime, renewed individuality, and its contemporary treatment as a location of transactional and material interest. I will contextualize the images of Landscapes From the Road as representing a more inclusive …
