Ethnomedicinal Plants Used By The Tribals Of Similipal Bioreserve, Orissa, India: A Pilot Study, Kambaska Kumar Behera

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Herbal medicine has been widely practiced throughout the world since ancient times. These medicines are safe and environmentally friendly. According to WHO about 80% of the world’s population relies on traditional medicine for their primary health care. India, being one of the world’s 12 mega biodiversity countries, enjoys export of herbal raw material worth U.S. $100-114 million per year approximately. Currently the Government of India, realizing the value of the country’s vast range of medicinal plants, has embarked on a mission of documenting the traditional knowledge about medicinal plants and herbs. This investigation, in a small way, takes up the …

Ethnobotanical Study Of Economic Trees: Uses Of Trees As Timbers And Fuelwoods In Ilorin Emirate Of Kwara State, Nigeria, A. A. Abdulrahaman, O. J. Fajemiroye, F. A. Oladele

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

A survey of the five local government areas that make up Ilorin Emirate in Kwara State, Nigeria, revealed extensive use of economic trees as timber woods and fuel woods. The forest resources are indiscriminately exploited by the poor inhabitants who solely depend on the forest to earn their livelihood. Tree species such as Pterocarpus erinaceus, Parkia biglobosa, Prosobis africana, Trichilia emetica, Anogeissus leiocarpus, Danielia oliveri, Khaya senegalensis, Tectonia grandis, Milicia excelsa and Vitellaria paradoxa are popular among the inhabitants as fuelwoods, with Vitellaria paradoxa being the most frequently used. Two Simple Resistant Regression Estimators, David J. Olive Jan 2005

Two Simple Resistant Regression Estimators, David J. Olive

Articles and Preprints

Two simple resistant regression estimators with OP(n−1/2) convergence rate are presented. Ellipsoidal trimming can be used to trim the cases corresponding to predictor variables x with large Mahalanobis distances, and the forward response plot of the residuals versus the fitted values can be used to detect outliers. The first estimator uses ten forward response plots corresponding to ten different trimming proportions, and the final estimator corresponds to the “best” forward response plot. The second estimator is similar to the elemental resampling algorithm, but sets of O(n) cases are used instead of randomly …

Ethnobotanical Profile Of Utror And Gabral Valleys, District Swat, Pakistan, Muhammad Hamayun Et Al.

Juju And Justice At The Movies: Vigilantes In Nigerian Popular Videos, John C. Mccall Dec 2004

Juju And Justice At The Movies: Vigilantes In Nigerian Popular Videos, John C. Mccall

Publications

This article examines the rise of vigilantism in southeastern Nigeria. Two opposing discourses on Nigerian vigilantism are examined. The first is characterized by the valorization of vigilantes as heroes in popular Nigerian video movies. The second is represented by a recent Human Rights Watch (HRW) report denouncing the vigilantes as criminals. My research utilizes ethnographic research to contextualize the video movies as a means toward understanding the ideological gap between these discourses. A close analysis of the Issakaba video series reveals a subtle treatment of the vigilante phenomenon designed to appeal to an indigenous perspective that is cognizant of the …

An Integrated Analysis Of Pre-Hispanic Mortuary Practices: A Middle Sicán Case Study, Izumi Shimada, Ken-Ichi Shinoda, Julie Farnum, Robert Corruccini, Hirokatsu Watanabe

Publications

Recent debate has raised serious questions about the viability of the social and ideological reconstruction of prehistoric culture on the basis of mortuary analysis. In recent years bioarchaeology has gained considerable prominence, underscoring the fact that death, burials, and associated mortuary practices are multifaceted phenomena shaped by biological, social, ideological, and taphonomic factors. Few studies attempting social reconstruction through mortuary analysis, including those of a bioarchaeological character, have adequately addressed this multidimensionality. This study shows that social, ideological, and bioarchaeological reconstruction can be productively pursued through tight integration of a multitude of approaches and perspectives set within a long‐term regional …

A Combined Crisp And Fuzzy Approach For Handwriting Analysis, N. Mogharreban, Shahram Rahimi, M. Sabharwal Jun 2004

A Combined Crisp And Fuzzy Approach For Handwriting Analysis, N. Mogharreban, Shahram Rahimi, M. Sabharwal

Computer Science Publications

This paper presents an off-line writer-independent handwriting analysis system which utilizes both classical crisp and fuzzy methodologies to output possible personality traits of the writer. The design deploys an analytical handwriting analysis approach based on two primitives, the baseline and the slant angle of the characters. The objective of the design strategy is to present a group of parameters for handwriting analysis based on the text. These parameters allow for the classification of writing into different categories which could be used as a preliminary step for outputting the personality traits of the writer. Two parameters, the baseline and the slant-angle, …

Maya Ritual And Myth: Human Sacrifice In The Context Of The Ballgame And The Relationship To The Popol Vuh, Jessica Zaccagnini Dec 2003

Maya Ritual And Myth: Human Sacrifice In The Context Of The Ballgame And The Relationship To The Popol Vuh, Jessica Zaccagnini

Honors Theses

The ballgame existed as an integral facet of Mayan life. Ritual and mythic expression are inextricably linked to the execution of the ballgame and are deeply integrated into Mayan culture. Ritual human sacrifice is an unquestionable aspect related to the ballgame. The Maya rulers extended the outcome of the ballgarne by satisfying the deities through ritual and human sacrifice (Scarborough 1991 :143). The Quiche book of epic narratives, named the Papal Vuh, is a recurring theme in the exploration of the ballgame and it is deeply weighted with mythic significance. A discussion of how this theme is interwoven into the …
