Differences In Memory Functioning Between Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder And/Or Focal Epilepsy., Sylvia E Lee, Michelle Y Kibby, Morris J Cohen, Lisa Stanford, Yong Park, Suzanne Strickland

Publications

Prior research has shown that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and epilepsy are frequently comorbid and that both disorders are associated with various attention and memory problems. Nonetheless, limited research has been conducted comparing the two disorders in one sample to determine unique versus shared deficits. Hence, we investigated differences in working memory (WM) and short-term and delayed recall between children with ADHD, focal epilepsy of mixed foci, comorbid ADHD/epilepsy and controls. Participants were compared on the Core subtests and the Picture Locations subtest of the Children's Memory Scale (CMS). Results indicated that children with ADHD displayed intact verbal WM and long-term …

Treatment Of Sleep Problems In Young Children: A Case Series Report Of A Cognitive-Behavioral Play Intervention, Karla K. Fehr, Sandra W. Russ, Carolyn E. Ievers-Landis

Publications

Sleep problems and bedtime resistance are common in young children. Treatment is critical because sleep problems typically persist, and insufficient sleep is related to worse outcomes. Current behavioral treatments do not work directly with the child to reduce anxiety and distress at bedtime. Cognitive-behavioral play therapy is a treatment approach designed to teach coping skills to young children by combining cognitive-behavioral therapy with pretend play, a developmentally-appropriate intervention mode. The current case series examined the effectiveness of adding a brief cognitive-behavioral play intervention (CBPI) to parent behavior management for young children with sleep difficulties. Four children (4-6 years) received three …

Metapopulation Viability Of Swamp Rabbits In Southern Illinois: Potential Impacts Of Habitat Change, Christopher D. Robinson, Joanne C. Crawford, Lyann Corcoran, Eric M. Schauber, Clayton K. Nielsen Jan 2016

Metapopulation Viability Of Swamp Rabbits In Southern Illinois: Potential Impacts Of Habitat Change, Christopher D. Robinson, Joanne C. Crawford, Lyann Corcoran, Eric M. Schauber, Clayton K. Nielsen

Publications

Swamp rabbits (Sylvilagus aquaticus) in southern Illinois exist as a metapopulation due to fragmentation of the bottomland hardwood forests in which they live. This fragmentation makes their persistence in Illinois uncertain. We used population viability analysis (PVA) to estimate the probability of persistence of the swamp rabbit metapopulation in Illinois, using a habitat suitability map we created and life history parameters drawn from the literature. We varied the parameters used in our PVA from 50% to 150% of the initial value to compare their effects on extinction risk and to direct future management and research. We tested the …

Enhanced Cognition And Hypoglutamatergic Signaling In A Growth Hormone Receptor Knockout Mouse Model Of Successful Aging., Kevin N Hascup, Mary K Lynn, Patrick J Fitzgerald, Shari Randall, John J Kopchick, Heather A Boger, Andrzej Bartke, Erin R Hascup

Articles

Growth hormone receptor knockout (GHR-KO) mice are long lived with improved health span, making this an excellent model system for understanding biochemical mechanisms important to cognitive reserve. The purpose of the present study was to elucidate differences in cognition and glutamatergic dynamics between aged (20- to 24-month-old) GHR-KO and littermate controls. Glutamate plays a critical role in hippocampal learning and memory and is implicated in several neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease. Spatial learning and memory were assessed using the Morris water maze (MWM), whereas independent dentate gyrus (DG), CA3, and CA1 basal glutamate, release, and uptake measurements were conducted in …

Soluble Amyloid-Β42 Stimulates Glutamate Release Through Activation Of The Α7 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor., Kevin N Hascup, Erin R Hascup

Articles

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an age-related neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive memory loss and hippocampal atrophy. Soluble amyloid-β (Aβ)42 and plaque accumulation is implicated as the neurotoxic species in this disorder; however, at physiological concentrations (pM-nM), Aβ42 contributes to neurogenesis, long-term potentiation, and neuromodulation. Because Aβ42 binds the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (α7nAChRs) located presynaptically on glutamatergic terminals, involved with hippocampal dependent learning and memory, we examined the effects of the human, monomeric isoform of Aβ42 on glutamate release in the dentate gyrus (DG), CA3, and CA1, of isoflurane anesthetized, 6-9 month old male C57BL/6J mice. We utilized an enzyme-based …

Peer-reviewed Articles

Ovarian tissue collected by biopsy procedures allows the performance of many studies with clinical applications in the field of female fertility preservation. The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of reproductive phase (anestrous vs. diestrous) and ovarian structures (antral follicles and corpus luteum) on the quality, class distribution, number, and density of preantral follicles, and stromal cell density. Ovarian fragments were harvested by biopsy pick-up procedures from mares and submitted to histological analysis. The mean preantral follicle and ovarian stromal cell densities were greater in the diestrous phase and a positive correlation of stromal cell density …

There are at least four opposing views on the directionality and configuration of Agree relations. In mainstream Minimalism, Agree is strictly downward “probing” (Chomsky 2000, 2001, Boskovic 2007, Epstein & Seely 2006), but some recent works argue instead that Agree always looks upwards (Zeijlstra 2012; Wurmbrand 2012). A third perspective takes agreement to follow from the Spec, head configuration (Koopman 2006; and see Chomsky’s 2013 labeling through shared prominent features), and under a fourth proposal, the directionality of Agree varies parametrically (Baker 2008). While each of these approaches has some empirical support, none achieves the strict conceptual necessity that is …

Accumulation Of Zinc, Copper, Or Cerium In Carrot (Daucus Carota) Exposed To Metal Oxide Nanoparticles And Metal Ions, Stephen Ebbs, Scott Jared Bradfield, Pawan Kumar, Jason White, Craig Musante, Xingmao Ma

Publications

The release of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) into the environment has raised concerns about the potential risks to food safety and human health. There is a particular need to determine the extent of ENP uptake into plant foods. Belowground vegetables growing in direct contact with the growth substrate are likely accumulate the highest concentration of ENPs. Carrot (Daucus carota) was grown in sand amended with ZnO, CuO, or CeO2 NPs or the same concentrations of Zn2+, Cu2+, or Ce4+. Treatment with ZnO or Zn2+ produced a concentration-dependent decrease in root and …

Whole Mount Dissection And Immunofluorescence Of The Adult Mouse Cochlea., Scott C Montgomery, Brandon C Cox Jan 2016

Whole Mount Dissection And Immunofluorescence Of The Adult Mouse Cochlea., Scott C Montgomery, Brandon C Cox

Articles

The organ of Corti, housed in the cochlea of the inner ear, contains mechanosensory hair cells and surrounding supporting cells which are organized in a spiral shape and have a tonotopic gradient for sound detection. The mouse cochlea is approximately 6 mm long and often divided into three turns (apex, middle, and base) for analysis. To investigate cell loss, cell division, or mosaic gene expression, the whole mount or surface preparation of the cochlea is useful. This dissection method allows visualization of all cells within the organ of Corti when combined with immunostaining and confocal microscopy to image cells at …

Economics Of The Firm: Identifying Factors Affecting The Performance Of Agribusiness Corporations, Casey Engel Jan 2016

Economics Of The Firm: Identifying Factors Affecting The Performance Of Agribusiness Corporations, Casey Engel

Research Papers

This paper is about identifying the factors that affect firm performance. Many economists have attempted to explain how to define an economy based off of many different aspects, but the focus of this paper is to find out what factors affect the performance of a company. This paper discusses different economic theories, and research which is related to the topic. Then I show a few factors that I found in my research regarding how a firm performs, and finish by interpreting and discussing those factors.

Living Communication Pedagogy: Instructors With Visible Disabilities, Carrie E. Mulderink

Research Papers

In this paper, I argue that critical communication pedagogy, as a discipline, can benefit from an inclusion of instructors with visible disabilities in its literature and analysis. In particular, I employ my experiences as a teaching assistant with a visible disability to situate my own embodied knowledge as a way of understanding, in concert with literature reviews of critical communication pedagogy and instructors with visible disabilities. I also interview instructors with visible disabilities about their experiences to argue for our inclusion in critical communication pedagogy.

Precognition: Bodies In Network, Kate Hoyt Dec 2015

Precognition: Bodies In Network, Kate Hoyt

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Precognition” is an installation that seeks to explore the liminal space between actor and environment, human and technology, and self and Other through the performativity of flow. Deleuze and Guattari use the term “flow” to describe a deliberately imprecise way of knowing or understanding meaning beyond, across, and within the existing category of the form (trans. 1987). Within the materialist ontology of poststructuralism, it is not the form that matters so much as the substance - energies and affects entangle us with our surroundings, affording a radical questioning of the rational, contained self that remains so central to the Western, …

Medical Tourism: An Emerging Terrain, Anthony Agbeh, Elaine T. Jurkowski Dec 2015

Medical Tourism: An Emerging Terrain, Anthony Agbeh, Elaine T. Jurkowski

Peer-reviewed Articles

Medical Tourism within the United States has become a growing industry, generally associated with people from second and third world areas coming to the United States for medical treatments. However, this trend is reversing, and there currently is a growing trend for North Americans to travel to areas associated with the developing world (Thailand, India, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea and Turkey) for medical treatments, and couple this with a restful scenario for family or loved ones to offer social support to the one convalescing. This paper presentation will address the upcoming trend toward medical tourism as a captive …

Stable Isotope Ratios As A Proxy For Human Geographic Provenance: Biogeographical Evidence From The 2h, 18o, And 13c Signatures In Modern Human Teeth, Anastasia Holobinko

Dissertations

The positive identification of a decedent is paramount to a forensic investigation in which human remains have been recovered and must be identified. Due to increasing global mobility in the world's populations, it is not inconceivable that an individual might die far away from his or her home. Pinpointing an individual's geographic origin may contribute to definitive forensic identification of contemporary human skeletal remains in cases where dental records and other means of identification are either unavailable to law enforcement personnel or do not yield immediate results. Stable isotope analysis of biogenic tissues such as tooth enamel and bone mineral …

Evaluation Of Equivalence Relations: Models Of Assessment And Best Practice, Dawn Amber Seefeldt Dec 2015

Evaluation Of Equivalence Relations: Models Of Assessment And Best Practice, Dawn Amber Seefeldt

Dissertations

Due to changing age demographics in the United States, by 2050, an estimated 62.1 Americans will be over the age of 65 and the number of Americans with cognitive impairment, such as Alzheimer’s disease, will increase drastically as well (Alzheimer’s Association, 2014; Ortman, Velkoff, & Hogan, 2014). Once a diagnosis or behavioral indicators of cognitive impairment are present, it would be beneficial to apply a treatment package that promotes the maintenance or re-establishment of stimulus control in the environment. From a behavioral perspective, stimulus control aids in learning and memory through both respondent and operant conditioning. In the current study, …

Training Deictic Relations To Children With Developmental Delays Through The Use Of The Peak Relational Training System, Dena Larae Kime Dec 2015

Training Deictic Relations To Children With Developmental Delays Through The Use Of The Peak Relational Training System, Dena Larae Kime

Theses

Children with developmental delays often do not acquire perspective taking skills without training. These skills are imperative to the ability to relate to others socially and the development of appropriate social behavior. They may lack the ability to recognize that another person’s view may differ from their own, or that reality may differ from appearance. This study used deictic relational training to aid in the development of a ‘Theory of Mind’ and the acquisition of perspective taking skills. The PEAK relational training system was used in a special education classroom to train YOU and I relations, as well as YOU …

Sophorolipid Production From Lignocellulosic Biomass Feedstocks, Abdul Samad Dec 2015

Sophorolipid Production From Lignocellulosic Biomass Feedstocks, Abdul Samad

Theses

The present study investigated the feasibility of production of sophorolipids (SLs) using yeast Candida bombicola grown on hydrolysates derived lignocellulosic feedstock either with or without supplementing oil as extra carbon source. Several researchers have reported using pure sugars and various oil sources for producing SLs which makes them expensive for scale-up and commercial production. In order to make the production process truly sustainable and renewable, we used feedstocks such as sweet sorghum bagasse, corn fiber and corn stover. Without oil supplementation, the cell densities at the end of day-8 was recorded as 9.2, 9.8 and 10.8 g/L for hydrolysate derived …

Quantitative Analysis Of The Total Bacteria, Lactobacillus, And Bifidobacterium Colonic Microflora In Rats Fed Conventional, Prebiotic, And Probiotic Soy Diets, Deborah Osterholm Jung Dec 2015

Quantitative Analysis Of The Total Bacteria, Lactobacillus, And Bifidobacterium Colonic Microflora In Rats Fed Conventional, Prebiotic, And Probiotic Soy Diets, Deborah Osterholm Jung

Theses

Research suggests that specific compositions of gut microbiota can directly affect energy harvesting and fat storage, which may indicate a potential role of intestinal bacteria in the regulation of body weight (i.e., obesity). The purpose of the current study was to determine if prebiotic- and probiotic-based diets modify gut microbiota in genetically obese rodents. For this, female Zucker diabetic fatty (ZDF) rats were assigned diets containing fructooligosaccharides (FOS), Bifidobacterium (BIF), or Lactobacillus (LAC) for three weeks. qPCR was then used to measure levels of colonic Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, and total bacteria. At termination, there was no significant difference in Lactobacillus levels …

Understanding Chytridiomycosis Resistance By Investigating The Cutaneous Defense Mechanisms Of Marsupial Frogs, David Burkart Dec 2015

Understanding Chytridiomycosis Resistance By Investigating The Cutaneous Defense Mechanisms Of Marsupial Frogs, David Burkart

Theses

Anurans are declining worldwide because of the spread of Batachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), the fungus that causes chytridiomycosis. However, some frogs are resistant to this disease, and understanding why may be critical to saving those that are susceptible. In Peru, Gastrotheca excubitor is resistant to chytridiomycosis while Gastrotheca nebulanastes is susceptible. Two anuran skin defenses, symbiotic bacteria and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), have demonstrated the ability to inhibit Bd in vitro when isolated from certain frogs. We tested if these defenses can explain the difference in susceptibility between the two Gastrotheca species. The cutaneous bacteria and AMPs of both species were collected, …

Fatigue Modeling Via Mammalian Auditory System For Prediction Of Noise Induced Hearing Loss, Pengfei Sun, Jun Qin, Kathleen Campbell Nov 2015

Fatigue Modeling Via Mammalian Auditory System For Prediction Of Noise Induced Hearing Loss, Pengfei Sun, Jun Qin, Kathleen Campbell

Articles

Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) remains as a severe health problem worldwide. Existing noise metrics and modeling for evaluation of NIHL are limited on prediction of gradually developing NIHL (GDHL) caused by high-level occupational noise. In this study, we proposed two auditory fatigue based models, including equal velocity level (EVL) and complex velocity level (CVL), which combine the high-cycle fatigue theory with the mammalian auditory model, to predict GDHL. The mammalian auditory model is introduced by combining the transfer function of the external-middle ear and the triple-path nonlinear (TRNL) filter to obtain velocities of basilar membrane (BM) in cochlea. The …
