Comparative Predation On Naturally Occurring Gypsy Moth (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) Pupae And Deployed Freeze-Dried Pupae, Eric M. Schauber, Clive G. Jones
Comparative Predation On Naturally Occurring Gypsy Moth (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) Pupae And Deployed Freeze-Dried Pupae, Eric M. Schauber, Clive G. Jones
Publications
Predation is an important factor in the dynamics of gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.) populations, yet predation rates can be difficult to estimate accurately in the field. Biased estimates can result from spatial heterogeneity in risk or from artifacts associated with deploying prey. Here we compare predation rates on freeze-dried gypsy moth pupae affixed with beeswax to pieces of burlap with predation rates on naturally occurring live pupae in the same sites. Daily predation rates, primarily by small mammals, were two to eight times greater for freeze-dried deployed pupae than natural pupae, depending on the year. These results indicate …

Evaluation Of Natural-Source Vitamin E, Rrr-Α-Tocopheryl Acetate, As A Micronutrient In Sunshine Bass Feed, Jesse T. Trushenski, Christopher C. Kohler
Publications
A variety of vitamin E isomers can be used in the manufacture of animal feeds, though the efficacy of these sources varies. Our purpose was to evaluate natural-source vitamin E, RRR-a-tocopheryl acetate (NSVE), as an alternative to synthetic vitamin E, all-rac-a-tocopheryl acetate (SYNE), in the diets of sunshine bass (female white bass Morone chrysops X male striped bass M. saxatilis). Our specific objectives were to evaluate graded levels of NSVE in terms of meeting the vitamin E requirement of sunshine bass and to address the physiological and economic suitability of NSVE by direct comparison with SYNE. Five isocaloric, isonitrogenous, …

Challenges And Opportunities In Finfish Nutrition, Jesse Trushenski, Craig Kasper, Christopher Kohler
Publications
Much of the criticism leveled at aquaculture (e.g., dependency on animal-derived feedstuffs, nutrient-laden effluent discharges, and increased organic contamination in edible products) can be traced to the feeds in use. Accordingly, finfish nutritionists are being challenged to formulate feeds that not only meet the nutritional requirements of livestock but also minimize production costs, limit environmental impacts, and enhance product quality. These challenges not only add considerable complexity to finfish nutrition but also afford opportunities to avoid some of the mistakes made by other industries in the past. From a review of the current status of finfish nutrition with respect to …

Extraction And Purification Of Various Organic Compounds In Selected Medicinal Plants Of Kotli Sattian, District Rawalpindi, Pakistan, Muhammad Gulfraz Et Al.
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
The medicinal values of roots, leaves and fruits of Funnel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill), Berbery (Berberis lyceum Royle), Vasaka and (Justicia adhatoda L) were explored in this study. The root, leaf and fruit samples of these plant species were collected from hilly areas of Kotli Sattian. Chemical analyses as well as identification of organic compounds by chromatographic techniques were carried out. The results indicate that all three plant species contained Proteins, Sugars, Lipids, Fiber and Vitamin C. Flavonoids and Saponins (Phytohormones) were found only in the fruit and leaf samples of Foeniculum vulgare. Palmatine and Berberine (Alkaloids) were …

Distribution Of The Long-Tailed Weasel (Mustela Frenata) In Illinois, Saleen M. Richter, Eric M. Schauber
Distribution Of The Long-Tailed Weasel (Mustela Frenata) In Illinois, Saleen M. Richter, Eric M. Schauber
Publications
Knowing the geographic distribution of any species is an important first step toward understanding its ecology. Long-tailed weasels (Mustela frenata) are secretive and difficult to detect, so little is known about their distribution in Illinois. To fill this gap in the knowledge, we solicited information from museum curators about the sites where long-tailed weasel specimens were collected in Illinois and surveyed biologists and recreational trappers to document locations of where they had seen or captured long-tailed weasels. We present an updated map of long-tailed weasel distribution, documenting presence in at least 60 of the 102 counties in Illinois. Long-tailed weasels …
Post-Recruitment Survival Of White-Tailed Deer Fawns In Southern Illinois, John H. Rohm, Clayton K. Nielsen, Eric M. Schauber, Alan Woolf
Post-Recruitment Survival Of White-Tailed Deer Fawns In Southern Illinois, John H. Rohm, Clayton K. Nielsen, Eric M. Schauber, Alan Woolf
Publications
Reliable estimates of survival for white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) fawns are needed for sound deer management. Several studies have estimated fawn survival prior to recruitment (i.e., before the onset of hunting season) but few have monitored fawns post-recruitment, especially in the lower Midwest or Southeast. We captured and radiocollared 166 neonatal fawns during 2002–2004 in southern Illinois. Ninety-one fawns survived to recruitment and were monitored for survival from 1 October until the end of the firearm hunting season (typically 8 December). Post-recruitment survival was 0.73 (95% CI = 0.63 – 0.83). Hunter harvest was the primary source of …

Agricultural Development, State Effectiveness, And Long-Run Economic Development, Richard Grabowski, Sharmistha Self
Agricultural Development, State Effectiveness, And Long-Run Economic Development, Richard Grabowski, Sharmistha Self
Economics Discussion Papers
This paper begins with the presumption that rapid economic development requires an effective state. An effective state is able to act independently of powerful interest groups with the aim of allocating resources so as to maximize long-term economic growth. It will be argued that such states are more likely to arise in situations within which the state must earn its income. That is, it must construct an institutional apparatus to extract the revenue that it needs and it is dependent upon the bulk of its agricultural producers to produce this revenue. The higher agricultural productivity within a region, the more …

Atomic Animals: Toward The Re-Invention Of Natural History And Science Filmmaking, Walter C. Metz
Publications
This essay explores the use of atomic imagery in natural history films as presented in the United States on The Discovery Channel. Using the methods of nuclear criticism, the article builds a case study of the apocalyptic and militarist metaphors employed by an episode of PaleoWorld devoted to the Stegosaurus and then broadens the scope toward more popular animal filmmaking, in particular, “blue chip” wildlife films such as Lion Battlefield.

White-footed mice prey on gypsy moth pupae while foraging for other, more abundant food. Mice appear capable of locally extirpating moths since mice exert high predation pressure on sparse pupae and are numerically decoupled from moth populations. Nevertheless, during 23 years of monitoring, moths persisted at scales .1 ha despite frequent extinctions at smaller spatial scales. We hypothesized that spatially heterogeneous intensity in mouse foraging and/or limited moth dispersal might allow moth persistence. Using a spatially explicit, individual-based, empirically parameterized model, we show that neither spatially heterogeneous predation by mice, nor limited moth dispersal alone allows moth persistence at typical …

Spatial heterogeneity in risk is a critical component of predator-prey interactions. However, at small spatial scales, it is difficult to quantify predation risk without altering it. We used track plates to measure local predation risk created by white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) foraging activity on oak-forest plots in Millbrook, New York. Live gypsy moth pupae (Lymantria dispar) were placed at 2 heights on trees and monitored for predation. Pupae deployed on trees visited by mice were more likely to be eaten than those on trees not visited. Logistic regression indicated that predation rates on gypsy moth pupae were …
Water Resources Policy Issues In Illinois, Christopher L. Lant
Water Resources Policy Issues In Illinois, Christopher L. Lant
The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)
Illinois is uniquely blessed with fresh water resources. Hundreds of miles from the sea, it is in Illinois that the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway connects with the Mississippi-Ohio River system via the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal and the Illinois River through the heart of the state. The navigable Wabash, Missouri and Tennessee Rivers also border Illinois or terminate at its borders giving Illinois superb overall waterbased transportation access exceeded in tonnage shipped among U.S. states by only Alaska and Louisiana. Notwithstanding the serious drought Illinois is suffering in 2005, Illinois receives abundant and reliable precipitation, under the current climatic …

Species Frequency Dynamics In An Old-Field Succession: Effects Of Disturbance, Fertilization And Scale, David J. Gibson, Beth A. Middleton, Kari Foster, Yohanes A.K. Honu, Erik W. Hoyer, Marilyn Mathis
Publications
Question: Can patterns of species frequency in an old-field be explained within the context of a metapopulation model? Are the patterns observed related to time, spatial scale, disturbance, and nutrient availability?
Location: Upland and lowland old-fields in Illinois, USA.
Method: Species richness was recorded annually for seven years following plowing of an upland and lowland old-field subject to crossed fertilizer and disturbance treatments (mowing and rototilling). Species occupancy distributions were assessed with respect to the numbers of core and satellite species.
Results: In both fields, species richness became higher in disturbed plots than in undisturbed plots over time, and decreased …
Restoration Of The Rio Grande/Rio Bravo In The Juarez Valley: An Analysis, Ivan Muniz
Restoration Of The Rio Grande/Rio Bravo In The Juarez Valley: An Analysis, Ivan Muniz
2005
The Rio Grande/Rio Bravo flow rate from El Paso/Ciudad Juarez to Fort Quitman/Cajoncitos has changed since the 19th century due to agriculture irrigation on both sides of the border. The river has been modified by agricultural infrastructure, as well as water quality degradation along the border due to wastewater discharges. Aquifers underlying the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo are being exhausted in the El Paso/Ciudad Juarez area as well. For these reasons, the ecosystems have been altered drastically. The vegetable and animal life that depend on the river and its riparian areas have been affected. The river water is legally tied to …
