A study has been conducted in the homesteads of drought-prone northwestern region of Bangladesh. Since there is no natural forest, the overall climatic condition is very harsh and progressive trend of desertification is threatening the livelihood of poor people. So it is important to carry out extensive plantations throughout the region to reverse the current trend of drought and desertification. The study identified a list of 19 drought tolerant species suitable for planting in the homesteads as well as in the vacant spaces. Coccinia grandis (L.) Voigt (Cucurbitaceae), occurs throughout the world and has intensive popular use in the treatment of infections. The main aim of the present work was to investigate the antidiabetic effects of aqueous extracts of leaves of C. grandis obtained by Decoction method. Graded doses of the aqueous extract were administered to normal and experimental diabetic rats for 10 days. Significant (p < 0.05) reduction in fasting blood glucose levels were observed in the normal as well as in the treated diabetic animals. Serum insulin levels were not stimulated in the animals treated with the extract. The changes in body weight, serum lipid profiles, liver glycogen levels were assessed in the extract treated diabetic rats and compared with diabetic control and normal animals.

Ocimum sanctum, commonly known as ‘Sacred basil’ or ‘Holy basil’, is grown as a household plant in India. This preliminary phytochemical study was carried out in acetone, benzene and chloroform extracts and the results showed the presence of numerous phytochemical compounds. The antibacterial activity was analyzed using four different bacterial strains (E.coli, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumonia) by using agar disc diffusion method. Our bacterial assay revealed that the extracts showed good antibacterial activity, but the acetone extract didn’t show any specific activity. The present study reveals the anti-diabetic effect in stomach of albino wistar rats using Gymnema sylvestre (Retz) R.Br. herbal powder. The histopatholoical and biochemical assays were carried out in organs and blood serum of stomach. The different concentration of G. sylvestre treated as 5, 10, 15, 20/gms/25 days. The effect of crude drugs in rats reduced the body weight and the diabetics was assessed in stomach by measuring the levels of selected blood parameters of protein, glucose, cholesterol, insulin and triglycerides and the effect of histopathology. Widespread encroachment of the fire-intolerant species Juniperus virginiana L. into North American grasslands and savannahs where fire has largely been removed has prompted the need to identify mechanisms driving J. virginiana encroachment. We tested whether encroachment success of J. virginiana is related to plant species diversity and composition across three plant communities. We predicted J. virginiana encroachment success would (i) decrease with increasing diversity, and (ii) J. virginiana encroachment success would be unrelated to species composition. We simulated encroachment by planting J. virginiana seedlings in tallgrass prairie, old-field grassland, and upland oak forest. We used J. virginiana survival and growth …

Pharmacognostical parameters for the leaves of Tridax procumbens L. were studied with the aim of drawing the pharmacopoeial standards for this species. Macroscopical and microscopical characters, physico-chemical constants, extractive values, fluorescence analysis of dry powder and its reaction after treatment with chemical reagents under visible light and UV light at 254 nm and 366 nm were studied. The pericarp of Punica granatum Linn. has been commonly employed as a crude drug in Indian traditional medicine for the treatment of diarrhoea as well as for use as an astringent, antihelminthic, asphrodisacs, laxative, diuretic, stomachic, cardiotonic and refrigerant. Antibacterial activity of P. granatum pericarp extracts was evaluated against ten Gastro Intestinal Tract (GIT) infection causing bacterial strains using paper disc agar diffusion method. The immunomodulatory properties of coconut protein were investigated in Swiss albino mice by immune suppressed with cyclophosphamide (CP). CP is a commonly used anti-cancer drug which causes toxicity by its reactive metabolites such as acrolein and phosphoramide mustard. In this study, the animals were grouped into four of 6 mice per group. Assessment of immunomodulatory activity was carried out by testing the RBC, WBC, Platelet and differential counts. White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are important game mammals and potential reservoirs of diseases of domestic livestock; thus, diseases of deer are of great concern to wildlife managers. Contact, either direct or indirect, is necessary for disease transmission, but we know little about the ecological contexts that promote intrasexual contact among deer. Using pair-wise direct contacts estimated from Global Positioning System collar locations and joint utilization distributions (JUDs), we assessed habitats in which contacts occur to test whether direct contact rates among female white-tailed deer in different social groups differs among land-cover types. Spathodea campanulata P. Beauv is extensively used in Indian traditional and folklore medicines to cure various human ailments. The preliminary phytochemical screening of the leaves revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, steroids and terpenoids. In vitro antibacterial studies of the leaf extracts were carried out on eight medically important bacterial strains using agar disc diffusion method. The antibacterial assay using petroleum ether leaf extracts showed good inhibitory activity against Klebsiella pneumoniae and compared with standard antibiotic Streptomycin.

The present study was carried out to screen and evaluate the antimicrobial activity of bark and leaf extracts from Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb. Hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts were tested against four selected Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. Result indicated that phytochemical extracts of P. marsupium exhibited significant anti-bacterial activity at all dosage tested (1mg/ disc and 5mg/ disc). However, the inhibitory activity was found to be dose dependent. Ethyl acetate and methanol extracts were found to be more active towards the organisms tested than hexane extract. Cinnamomum species have long been used as spices. The preliminary bioactive constituent’s identification and brine shrimp lethality activities of ethanolic extracts of seven Cinnamomum species, viz., C. travancoricum, C. walaiwarense, C. wightii, C. verum, C. sulphuratum, C. riparium, and C. perrottetii were evaluated in this study. The results of cytotoxic activity of the bark extracts of seven Cinnamomum species were more active than leaf extracts against brine shrimp lethality of Artemia salina.

The organic extracts of Passiflora edulis and Sphaeranthus indicus were evaluated for antimicrobial activity against clinically important bacteria, viz., Escherichia coli MTCC 443, Salmonella typhi MTCC 734, Staphylococus aureus MTCC 737, Bacillus subtilis, Streptococcus pyogens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus vulgaris, Aspergillus flavus, Pencillium restrictum, and Trichoderma viride. The in vitro antimicrobial activity was performed by agar disc diffusion method. Streptococcus pyogens was the most resistant bacterial strains against the methanol extracts.

Evolvulus alsinoides L. (Convolvulaceae) is used as nootropic or brain-tonic in traditional systems of medicine like Ayurveda and Unani. The plant is used by certain ethnic races across India, Africa and Philippines to cure fever, cough and cold, venereal diseases, azoospermia, adenitis, and depression. Pre-clinical (in vivo and vitro) investigations have demonstrated anti-amnesic, antistress (adaptogenic), antimicrobial and gastro protective activity. Although clinical-studies are warranted for potential use of E. alsinoides in treating dementia, pre-clinical research has justified the ancient claim of ‘brain-tonic.' The review summarizes ethno medicinal uses and pharmacological investigations carried on the medicinal plant.

Samples of moss (Barbula lambarenensis) with their substrates collected from Belewu Drive, Oke Odo, Ilorin, were taken to the screen house of the University of Ilorin biological garden to monitor the effects and tolerance of this plant to different heavy metals. The moss samples were divided into eleven regimes, widely separated from one another to avoid contaminations. Ten regimes were differently irrigated with 1000 ppm and 2000 ppm of lead, copper, cadmium, iron and vanadium thrice a week. Preliminary Phytochemical Screening And Antimalarial Studies Of Spathodea Campanulatum P. Beauv Leaf Extracts, Rangasamy Dhanabalan Et Al.

Spathodea campanulata P. Beauv is extensively used in Indian traditional and folklore medicines to cure various human ailments. The preliminary phytochemical screening of the leaves revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, steroids and terpenoids. The organic leaf extracts of this species was evaluated for antimalarial activity against clinically isolated Plasmodium falciparum chloroquine-resistant and sensitive strains. The in vitro antimalarial activity was performed following schizont maturation inhibition assay, (SMI). The ethanol fraction exhibited very good antiplasmodial activity against both chloroquine sensitive and resistant Plasmodium falciparum isolates followed by the butanol and chloroform extracts.

Salem district sustain a very rich traditional medicinal plant wealth and inherits unique plant and animal communities. Due to deforestation, loss of biodiversity and indiscriminate exploitation of wild and natural resources many valuable herbs like Abrus precatorius, Gloriosa superba, Martynia annua, etc., are in the verge of extinction. The present paper enumerates status, conservation strategies and traditional uses of 68 plant species by the ethnic and rural people of Salem district of Tamilnadu. Over the past decade plants have become an interesting source of new classes of pharmacologically active natural products. Some secondary metabolites are also well known for their effectiveness on living species. The PASS (Prediction of Activity Spectra for Substances) computer program, which is able to simultaneously predict more than one thousand biological and toxicological activities from only the structural formulas of the chemicals, was used to predict the biological activity profile of 7 secondary metabolites. PASS predictions were successfully compared to the available information on the pharmacological and toxicological activity of these compounds.
