Questions And Answers On Fruit Culture, N. E. Hansen
Questions And Answers On Fruit Culture, N. E. Hansen
Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)
Is fruit culture profitable in South Dakota? Hardy varieties of apples, crabapples, pears, plums, cherries, apricots, grapes, raspberries, gooseberries and currants can be grown successfully. Apples, crabapples and plums are grown commercially in the southern part of the state, in the Black Hills and in the northeastern part. But of far more importance is the growing of fruit at home. The value of fruits in the diet has been established and if some fruit is raised at home much more will be consumed than when all had to be purchased. And more fruit means better health. There is an old …

Feeding And Management For Egg Production, W. E. Poley
Feeding And Management For Egg Production, W. E. Poley
SDSU Extension Circulars
The purpose of a ration for egg production is two-fold. First, it must furnish the heat required to maintain the body temperature of the chicken at about 106.7 degrees. In addition, the birds need feed for energy and other materials necessary for the maintenance of the body and health. After these body requirements are met, and if proper nutrients are available, the remainder of the feed can be used for the production of eggs. Birds in good production require about two-thirds of all the feed they eat to maintain their bodies. Thus, it can be seen that about one-third more …

Poultry Management : A Manual For 4-H Club Members, M. H. Simonson
SDSU Extension Circulars
Poultry and eggs are produced on 90 percent of all the farms in South Dakota. The annual income from poultry raising during the years 1935-39 was more than 15 million dollars which is more than $160 per farm. South Dakota ranks 21st in the United States in the number of chickens raised, and is the 12th leading turkey producing state. The gross income from poultry and eggs is usually not large on most farms but is well distributed and is used to meet many of the small expenses which come up throughout the year. In addition to paying grocery bills …

The hog is highly adaptable to South Dakota conditions. Hogs are the most highly concentrated in the southeastern meat producing area of the state and are found in smaller numbers in the central cash-grain and livestock area. The fact that hogs can be handled in small or large units makes them particularly well adapted to these areas.

Meat Identification And Judging, I. B. Johnson
Meat Identification And Judging, I. B. Johnson
SDSU Extension Circulars
Meat is a food most attractive to one's appetite. A diet without meat lacks savoriness and palatability. The following statement regarding meat has been accepted by the American Medical Association: "The modern science of nutrition shows meat to be a wholesome, valuable, healthful, easily digestible and highly nutritious food." Because of meat's importance in. the diet, all 4-H Club members should avail themselves of the opportunity afforded by meat judging and identification work to become more familiar with quality in meat and with the wholesale and retail cuts of meat.
