Early South Dakota Lambs, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
Producing early spring lambs has been one of the most profitable enterprises on South Dakota farms. Choice spring lambs sold on the late May and early June market have never been in over supply. With good management and careful attention, a flock of ewes bred for early lambs will return an excellent profit from low investment with comparatively little interference with other farm labor.

Silage Additives, O. E. Olson, L. B. Embry, H. H. Voelker
Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)
Summary
Through the years a number of materials have been suggested for incorporation into silage to improve the preservation of nutrients, nutritive value or palatability of the silage. In addition to being called additives, some of these materials are referred to as preservatives or conditioners. Especially during recent years, many commercial preparations have been made available to the farmer, who naturally wonders whether their use will be economically sound.
Thorough testing of these materials would require that each be used at several levels, with forages at various moisture contents, under different storage conditions and with many kinds of silage. Therefore, …

A Comparison Of Corn Silage And Forage Sorghum Silage In The Production Of Beef, Herbert Lawrence Sorbel
A Comparison Of Corn Silage And Forage Sorghum Silage In The Production Of Beef, Herbert Lawrence Sorbel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Production of silage per acre varies in different areas of the United States. The type of forage used has a large effect on the tonnage of silage produced. Two of the common crops used for high production of silage in South Dakota are corn and forage sorghum. When stored as silage, sorghum has produced as high as 27 tons of feed yielded on and one-half to two times as many tons of silage per acre of corn. Ruminant animals are well adapted to utilizing large amounts of roughages in their rations. These animals have the capacity to consume three to …

Tame Grasses For Pasture Or Hay, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
Tame Grasses For Pasture Or Hay, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
The low production of native or permanent pasture grasses has long been a problem in South Dakota. Most of these pastures are bluegrass or native short grasses such as blue grama and buffalo grass. These grasses are palatable and highly nutritious, but do not produce as much TDN (total digestible nutrients) per acre as recommended tame grasses. Tame grasses can be used to good advantage on many pastures.
Establishing Vegetative Cover To Protect Roadside Soils In South Dakota, D. Hovland, D. E. Wesley, J. Thomas
Establishing Vegetative Cover To Protect Roadside Soils In South Dakota, D. Hovland, D. E. Wesley, J. Thomas
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
A vegetative cover has been the most practical protection against erosion of roadside soils. Since vegetation also has enhanced roads in safety and appearance, the establishment of a roadside cover has been a part of highway construction.
Topsoil has greater organic matter content, tilth development, fertility level, and seed content. As a result, it has been used more successfully than subsoil to produce a vegetative cover and stabilize roadsides from erosion. Costs of salvaging and spreading topsoil make it desirable to seek ways of satisfactorily establishing a vegetative cover on subsoil materials along roadsides.

The Relationship Of Socio-Economic Status And Physical Fitness Of Selected Sixth Grade Girls In Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Judith Ann Jasper
The Relationship Of Socio-Economic Status And Physical Fitness Of Selected Sixth Grade Girls In Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Judith Ann Jasper
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this investigation was to determine if a relationship exists between socio-economic status and physical fitness. Forty eight, sixth-grade girls enrolled in the physical education classes of five elementary schools in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, during February, 1966, were divided into three socio-economic groups. The total number money income of each family was obtained from the Credit Bureau. The three socio-economic groups used in this study were the low income group with an income of $0 to $4,000, the middle income group with an income of $5,000 to $9,999, and the high-income group with an income of $10,000 …

A Histological Study Of The Various Tissue Components Of Raw And Cooked Longissimus Dorsi Muscle In Pork, Dorothy E. Deethardt
A Histological Study Of The Various Tissue Components Of Raw And Cooked Longissimus Dorsi Muscle In Pork, Dorothy E. Deethardt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Muscle fibers and connective tissue are known to affect tenderness. The partitioning of these two structures was first attempted by Lehman as early as 1897 (Wilson, et, al, 1954). Since that time chemical and histological work has been examined extensively to relate tissue components to tenderness. This study was undertaken to evaluate: (1) the effect of fixatives on (a) the reticular, collagenous, and elastic connective tissue of raw and cooked pork muscle and (b) the fiber diameter in the raw state; (2) the type and amount of connective tissue in pork muscle and the effect of heat on the various …
Hydrologic Aspects Of Water Harvesting, Sidney W. Black
Hydrologic Aspects Of Water Harvesting, Sidney W. Black
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As is most Midwestern states, livestock consumption, human consumption, irrigation, recreation, and wildlife are all in competition for the available water supplies in South Dakota. It is the purpose of this study to develop design criteria for a more efficient system of collection water to assist in satisfying the vast demands of livestock consumption. A moisture shortage can be the downfall of any livestock producer. There are roughly 728 million acres of rangeland in the continental United States with 26.7 million acres in South Dakota (18). Most of this area is available for domestic livestock grazing, but a large portion …

The File And Find Filing System, South Dakota State University Cooperative Extension
SDSU Extension Special Reports
This document discusses the File and Find System. A standard and adaptable filing system makes possible more efficient office management and an increase in the quality and quantity of services rendered to county people by members of the Extension staff. Increased demands on county Extension agents by individuals and groups for technical and current information necessitates that agents have access to current, complete, and well-organized files. It is important that you have an appreciation for and a working knowledge of this system. It is flexible and adaptable, which will make its adoption understandable and effective in South Dakota counties. Study …
