Performance Testing Beef Cattle, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University Mar 1971

Performance Testing Beef Cattle, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University

SDSU Extension Fact Sheets

Performance testing offers beef cattle breeders a way of measuring differences among animals for traits that have economic significance. The economic traits are those that contribute to productive efficiency, carcass desirability, rapid growth rate, efficient use of feed, regularity of reproduction, and carcass quality desired by the packer and consumer. The differences observed or measured in these traits are to a certain extent inherited differences. Thus, the systematic measurement of these differences, the recording of the measurements, and the use of the records in a selection program will increase the rate of genetic improvement in a herd.

Swine Health: Respiratory Diseases Of Swine, Cooperative Extension Service Jan 1971

Swine Health: Respiratory Diseases Of Swine, Cooperative Extension Service

SDSU Extension Special Series

Chronic pneumonia is said to be the most costly disease of swine in the world. Pneumonia causes considerable death loss in swine of all ages. It also causes poor performance, slow gains, and poor feed utilization in chronically infected animals. This condition is the number one problem of swine production today. Modern confinement rearing also contributes to the problem. Large numbers of hogs living in close proximity provide ideal conditions for the spread of infectious agents from one to another. Poorly managed swine facilities, with less than adequate ventilation "add fuel to the fire." At the present time there is …

Swine Health: Swine Arthritis, James H. Bailey, Cooperative Extension Service Jan 1971

Swine Health: Swine Arthritis, James H. Bailey, Cooperative Extension Service

SDSU Extension Special Series

Arthritis of swine is of economic importance to the swine producer and the meat packer. Recent figures from USDA meat inspection records have shown an increasing trend in condemnations of parts of carcasses and of whole carcasses due to arthritis. Figures for 1969 show a multimillion dollar loss due to trim and condemnation on the packing floor. This is only a small portion of the actual loss. Most losses due to arthritis are suffered by the producer in terms of slower and less efficient gains. Death losses may occur from the septicemia due to the infectious agent in the blood …

Responses Of Rumen Microflora To Whey Products Added To High-Grain Low-Roughage Rations, Virgil L. Metzger Jan 1971

Responses Of Rumen Microflora To Whey Products Added To High-Grain Low-Roughage Rations, Virgil L. Metzger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many factors present in livestock feeds affect the numbers and types of protozoa and bacteria in the rumen. A small particle size of feed and a fast rate of passage of the feed through the ruminant decreases protozoal numbers. Full feeding of a concentrate ration and an acid pH in the rumen also tend to reduce protozoa numbers. Bacteria numbers tend to increase as the protozoa numbers decrease. Knowledge of rumen microflora population changes on different rations is lacking. It is known that restricted-roughage rations will generally cause lower protozoal numbers. Since whey is an available source of lactose and …

The Lipid Composition Of Milk As Affected By High Grain-Limited Roughage Rations Containing Whey Products, Roger Charles Peper Jan 1971

The Lipid Composition Of Milk As Affected By High Grain-Limited Roughage Rations Containing Whey Products, Roger Charles Peper

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Certain rations fed to lactating dairy cows appear to have a dramatic influence on the lipid composition of milk fat produced. A high grain ration fed with a limited amount of roughage tends to cause a depression in milk fat production while at the same time changing the milk fat composition. There have been various attempts to alleviate the depression in milk fat. Minerals used in the ration seem to slightly relieve the milk fat depression caused by high grain rations. One drawback has been lower milk production due to a decline in concentrate consumption. Whey products added to a …

Rapeseed, Sunflower And Soybean Meals As Protein Supplements In Dairy Calf Starters, Paul E. Stake Jan 1971

Rapeseed, Sunflower And Soybean Meals As Protein Supplements In Dairy Calf Starters, Paul E. Stake

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The world need for protein is ever-increasing causing the feed industry to seek new sources of protein supplementation for livestock (17). Urea and other non-protein-nitrogen (NPN) source have received much attention in the past twenty years as protein substitutes, but their use is limited to years as protein substitutes, but their use is limited to functional ruminant animals. Pre-ruminant calves, unable to utilize NPN, need natural protein in their diets. Soybean meal (SBN) has been the common protein supplement in many dry calf meals in the Midwest for several years and has been proven to be an acceptable source of …

The Influence Of Various Stress Conditions On Cholinesterase Levels Of Cattle Treated With An Organophosphorus Insecticide, Mitchell J. Wrich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Six-to 8-months-old Hereford heifers categorized as grubby or grub-free calves were used for this research. Forty calves were purchased in 1968 and also in 1969. The grubby calves were obtained from Highmore, South Dakota, an area where calves have a history of heavy grub infestations of both Hypoderma bovis (L.) and Hypoderma lineatum (de Villers). The grub-free calves were purchased in Fargo, North Dakota. Calves raised in this area seldom are infested with cattle grubs. Specified groups of calves were subjected to 30 minutes of continuous exercise or the withholding of feed and water for 24 hours prior to treatment …

Plant Analysis Of Spring Small Grains At Different Stages Of Growth, James Henry Pfeifer Jan 1971

Plant Analysis Of Spring Small Grains At Different Stages Of Growth, James Henry Pfeifer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Plant analysis has developed into a diagnostic tool for measuring the nutrient status of crops. Plant analysis promises to greatly supplement the methods now available for estimating nutrient sufficiency, and as a result, increase the yield of crops. For small grains, the sampling time recommended for plant analysis is the reproductive stage ·of growth. This period has been used to determine nutrient concentrations of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Zn, Mn, and Fe. Much concern exists with regards to the accuracy of plant analysis in predicting the nutrient status of small grain plants. Concern spring wheat, and barley under …

The Relationship Of Porcine Muscle Fiber Size And Number To Management, Meatiness And Quality, Ronald J. Smith Jan 1971

The Relationship Of Porcine Muscle Fiber Size And Number To Management, Meatiness And Quality, Ronald J. Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For many years animal scientists have been striving to find the “foolproof” method foreseeing the desired carcass and consumer characteristics in live animals before they are slaughtered. As a result, several different live animal and carcass evaluation techniques have been developed and tested with slow but encouraging success in some areas. This “never-ending” search has been stimulated by the development of new and more sophisticated research tools and facilities as time advances. Increasing consumer demands for a muscular, trim, high quality meat product makes identification of these desired traits in the live animal and carcass necessary. Thus, the producer, feeder …

Metabolism Of Urea Nitrogen By Rumen Ciliate Protozoa, Alan Lewis Vogel Jan 1971

Metabolism Of Urea Nitrogen By Rumen Ciliate Protozoa, Alan Lewis Vogel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research was to study the utilization of urea by mixed populations of rumen protozoa in vitro in the absence of bacteria. Initial experiments were conducted to determine the validity of chemical determinations used by other researchers in quantitating the nitrogen fractions in the medium following incubation. An experiment was conducted to determine the utilization of urea by rumen bacteria and this served as the basis for evaluating utilization of urea by protozoa. Culture techniques were developed to grow and maintain protozoa under in vitro conditions. Three experiments were conducted in which various nitrogen fractions of fermentation …

A Characterization Of Four Prairie Grasses, Carolyn A. Cogswell Jan 1971

A Characterization Of Four Prairie Grasses, Carolyn A. Cogswell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Even though native range forages have been available a long time, there is little research data concerning the specific grasses characterized as native forage or browse. Little research has been done to study these forages because of their natural habitat far from research laboratories, the task of collecting enough forage for adequate sample testing, and sparse yet hardy existence and questionable known vegetative growth with each year's different climate and environmental conditions. Certainly it seems logical that at some future time the knowledge of their nutritive value will become important. Perhaps then with adequate management the rancher can improve upon …

Pasture Supplementation Of Beef Cattle Followed By Drylot Finishing With High-Concentrate Rations And Antibiotic Supplement, Cecil R. Graber Jan 1971

Pasture Supplementation Of Beef Cattle Followed By Drylot Finishing With High-Concentrate Rations And Antibiotic Supplement, Cecil R. Graber

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objectives of the research reported in this thesis were to determine the effects of various levels of pasture grain feeding on pasture weight gains as well as on subsequent gains and feed requirements in drylot. The value of an antibiotic was tested at various levels to determine the effects in rapidly getting cattle on full feed of a high-concentrate ration. The effects of the various levels of the antibiotic were also studied when administered for five consecutive days at monthly intervals throughout the experiment.

Effects Of Delactosed Whey, Skim Milk, And Sugar On Ration Palatability And Performance Of Early Weaned Pigs, Larry A. Hauser Jan 1971

Effects Of Delactosed Whey, Skim Milk, And Sugar On Ration Palatability And Performance Of Early Weaned Pigs, Larry A. Hauser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There has been much interest in the possibility and feasibility of weaning pigs at an early age with attempts to wean pigs as early as one to two hours post-partum. Most workers, however, have concentrated their studies upon weaning at two to four weeks of age. When pigs are weaned at this early age, it is important to utilize feedstuffs that will result in an economical, highly palatable, starter diet that will provide rapid and efficient pig gains. Therefore, the diet must provide all of the essential nutrients in a readily available form and at a cost which is not …
