Utilization Of Goose Muscle In The Preparation Of Meat Rolls, K. G. Wanstedt, P. R. Durland, S. C. Seideman, L S. Donnelly Nov 1980

Utilization Of Goose Muscle In The Preparation Of Meat Rolls, K. G. Wanstedt, P. R. Durland, S. C. Seideman, L S. Donnelly

South Dakota Poultry Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1980

South Dakota produces more domestic geese than any other state in the United States. Marketing of geese is decreasing due to importation of Canadian geese and a decreasing consumer demand. Research is needed to increase goose meat consumption. A large percentage of turkey meat is sold as retail convenience products such as rolls, yet there are virtually no comparable products on the market from goose meat. This study was undertaken to develop and evaluate an acceptable goose roll.

Effect Of Distillers' Grains And Oats On Fatty Liver Hemorrhagic Syndrome, C. C. Rakshit, C. W. Carlson

South Dakota Poultry Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1980

Fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome (FLHS) can be a major cause for economic loss due to excessive mortality. Egg production may or may not be affected by this disease. The etiology of this disease is still uncertain, although several nutritional factors are supposed to be associated with it. Several nutritional factors and different feed ingredients have been tried in experiments at this research center with various results (A.S. Series 75-28, 76-1, 77-27, 78-5 and 79-24).

Barley Proteins, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University Jul 1980

Barley Proteins, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University

SDSU Extension Fact Sheets

The problem with barley is that there is no single percentage that is suitable. Barley is both a nutritious livestock feed and the principal grain used in the production of malt. The same varieties are used for both purposes. For this reason it has two market classes: feed barley and malting barley.

Feeding Brood Sows, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University Jun 1980

Feeding Brood Sows, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University

SDSU Extension Fact Sheets

Pregestation, gestation, and lactation are critical periods in swine nutrition. Work at many experiment stations has shown that sows will produce larger litters if their energy intake is limited during gestation than if they are allowed access to a self feeder. In the gestation period, weight gains must be controlled, because over-fatness often decreases litter size, besides increasing feed costs. In the nursing period, plentiful milk production requires liberal feeding; however, there is evidence that milk production is to some extent related to the number of nursing pigs. It would appear reasonable to feed the lactating sow on the basis …

Flowering And Podding Response Of Soybeans (Glycine Max) To Irrigation, John Douglas Mcleod Jan 1980

Flowering And Podding Response Of Soybeans (Glycine Max) To Irrigation, John Douglas Mcleod

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Soybeans have recently increased in importance as an alternative crop throughout the corn belt and parts of the South. In South Dakota this has involved the expansion of soybean production into less well adapted cropping environments. Because of considerable interest in bean production under irrigation, a need for information on the management of irrigation water has developed, to assure high yields in these marginal areas. The increasing demand for limited supplied of irrigation water, the marginal or poor quality of many of these waters, and the increasing awareness of the energy cost of irrigating have all intensified the necessity to …

The Effect Of Ferric-Nitrilotriacetic Acid On Selected Hemogram Parameters Of Gestating And Lactating Swine And Their Offspring, Thomas Allen Heirigs Jan 1980

The Effect Of Ferric-Nitrilotriacetic Acid On Selected Hemogram Parameters Of Gestating And Lactating Swine And Their Offspring, Thomas Allen Heirigs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ever since man has moved to confinement farrowing of swine, the problem of iron-deficiency in baby pigs has increased. The problem can be partially alleviated by various treatments which can be employed by the swine producer. However, many of these treatments stress to the young piglet and involve much time and labor, which may not be available during parturition. A beneficial tool to the porcine producer would be the elimination of both the stress placed on the neonatal pig and of the extra labor providing a hematinic which would be administered prepartum to the dam. The hematinic employed must be …

Effect Of Vitamin A Injections On Blood And Liver Levels In Cattle Fed Low-Carotene Diets, R. M. Luther, L. B. Embry, L. F. Bush, R. Rosenboom

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1980

The objectives of these experiments were twofold, first, to study the effects of length of feeding period and dosage level of injected vitamin A on vitamin A status of steers fed a low carotene finishing rations without supplemental vitamin A, and, second, to study the effect of dosage level of injected vitamin A on liver storage of the vitamin following a period of feeding considered to have resulted in major depletion of prior body stores of the vitamin.

Methods Of Supplementing Vitamin A To Fattening Beef Cattle, R. M. Luther, L. B. Embry, J. F. Giles

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1980

Yearling beef steers averaging 775 lb. were fed a low-carotene diet during a 106-day finishing experiment to compare methods of vitamin A supplementation. The diets consisted of a full feed of whole corn grain and 2 lb. of chopped alfalfa-bromegrass hay. Methods of vitamin A supplementation were (1) vitamin A in a supplement fed at 1 lb. per steer daily (20,000 IU), (2) vitamin A in a mineral mixture (544,800 IU per lb.) offered to the cattle on a free-choice basis and (3) vitamin A as an instramuscular injection of 3 million IU at the start of the trial. The …

Supplementation For The Cow Herd, David L. Whittington Jan 1980

Supplementation For The Cow Herd, David L. Whittington

South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1980

Supplementation programs are very much a part of our cow-calf program. The type of supplementation may vary throughout the year as well as from year to year. A good manager knows the type of supplement that his herd needs. Supplements are available in many forms from commercial distributors and can consist of many types of feeds, minerals and vitamins. Many producers choose to develop their own supplements utilizing feeds produced on their ranch or that can be purchased locally.
A "supplementation program" may be defined as "a program which provides the difference between the nutrients required by livestock and the …

Prostglandins For Estrous Synchronization In Beef Cows, H. L. Miller Jan 1980

Prostglandins For Estrous Synchronization In Beef Cows, H. L. Miller

South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1980

Researchers have been attempting to control estrous cycles in animals for the last 50 years. Several progesterone products (Medroxy progesterone acetate and Melengestrol acetate) were approved and marketed for cattle estrous cycle control in the 1960's. However, these products resulted in limited success and use.

Cow Efficiency, C. A. Dinkel Jan 1980

Cow Efficiency, C. A. Dinkel

South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1980

If we are to discuss cow efficiency, perhaps we should define the term so that everyone is thinking about the same thing. Efficiency is usually thought of as a relationship between input and output and is frequently calculated as a ratio of either one to the other. We have used pounds of Total Digestible Nutrients (TDN) required to produce a pound of product either at weaning or at slaughter. The TDN input is that consumed by the cow for the year from weaning to weaning plus the consumption of the calf from birth to weaning or slaughter. In our situation, …

A Survey Evaluation Of South Dakota Beef Cattle Production, Vern Dooley Jan 1980

A Survey Evaluation Of South Dakota Beef Cattle Production, Vern Dooley

South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1980

Profit in a cow-calf operation depends largely on pounds of calf weaned. This in turn is dependent upon calf crop percentage and weaning weight of calves. Producers need to recognize losses associated with low fertility and light weaning weights and be aware of some of the factors contributing to these losses. This study was designed to aid producers by providing information on the level of couunercial beef production in South Dakota. We have further sought to identify some factors influencing that level of production.
This report summarizes information supplied through a sequence of producer completed surveys. Thus, it was through …

Irrigating Alfalfa In South Dakota, James R. Johnson, Charles R. Krueger, Lyle A. Derscheid, Darrel D. Pehl, Paul L. Carson Jan 1980

Irrigating Alfalfa In South Dakota, James R. Johnson, Charles R. Krueger, Lyle A. Derscheid, Darrel D. Pehl, Paul L. Carson

SDSU Extension Circulars

Alfalfa performs admirably an irrigated crop in South Dakota-so well that it is often neglected. When given attention, it can realistically maintain irrigated yields of 6 to 7 TIA each year in most of South Dakota where 1 to 2 T are produced on dryland. Irrigated land that will produce 100-130 bu corn will produce 5-7 T alfalfa. On poorer irrigated land that produces 50-70 hu corn, one can expect 3-5 T alfalfa. Alfalfa has higher water requirements for peak yields than most other crops. It may not reach its full potential yield in any part of the stale without …
