Effect Of Varying Dietary Selenium Levels On Tissue Composition, Blood Composition And Performance Of Growing Swine Fed Seleniferous Grains, T. B. Goehring, G. W. Libal, I. S. Palmer, I. S. Palmer

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1982

It is established that selenium is an essential micronutrient as well as a natural toxicant for domestic livestock. However, reports of selenium toxicosis in swine are limited and not well documented. The level at which selenium becomes toxic to swine is thought to be about 8 ppm. This value was derived from the initial selenium research of the 1930's, with considerable extrapolation from other species used in this determination.
Since that time, diet composition has become much more complex, nutrient level of diets has increased and feed additives are commonly used. It is not known what effect these factors or …

Photoinduction Of Floral Development In Hard Red Winter Wheat, Jose Ernesto Robles Wijangco Mar 1982

Photoinduction Of Floral Development In Hard Red Winter Wheat, Jose Ernesto Robles Wijangco

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

South Dakota is at the northern limit of winter wheat cultivation in the United States. However, it has been estimated that only 15% of the total winter wheat acreage has been planted to hardy winter wheat cultivars in this state. Records at this station indicate that grain yields of winter hardy cultivars can be 20 to 40% lower than less hardy cultivars in the absence of severe freeze stress. Low grain yields of hardy types is one reason for low preference of these phenotypes by growers. Hardy cultivars usually head late compared to less hardy ones. With late initiation of …

The Effect Of Photoperiod On Reproduction Of Targhee Ewes, Richard D. Rogen Feb 1982

The Effect Of Photoperiod On Reproduction Of Targhee Ewes, Richard D. Rogen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Seasonality of reproduction in sheep has created an oscillating supply of lambs. A more constant supply of lambs would allow more efficient use of facilities and labor by producers, feedlots and packing plants. Seasonal reproduction also limits the lifetime production of the ewe. Extension of the breeding season would provide a more consistent supply of lambs. In addition, more than one lamb crop per ewe could be produced annually. Not only the yearly lamb production but also the lifetime production of the ewe would then be increased. Also, the generation interval would be shortened allowing faster herd improvement. It is …

Protein Supplementation As Related To Protein Sources For Growing And Finishing Lambs, Luis Fernando Palmer Feb 1982

Protein Supplementation As Related To Protein Sources For Growing And Finishing Lambs, Luis Fernando Palmer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The production of high-quality foods continues to offer an important challenge to livestock producers and animal scientists. People in many countries of the world consume diets which are inadequate in quantity and quality of nutrients. The animal industry plays a major role as a supplier of high-quality foods such as meat, milk and eggs for human nutrition. Protein is perhaps the most important nutrient provided by animal products because of its quality and availability in relation to human needs. Ruminants such as cattle and sheep have the unique ability to convert low quality feedstuffs to high quality food as animal …

Immunotoxic Effects Of Pentachlorophenol In Mice, Linda J. Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objectives of this investigation was to determine the effects of ingested pentachlorophenol (PCP) on immunological parameters in mice. Specific immunotoxic effects of PCP were determined using the results of total and differential white blood cell counts, electrophoretic serum protein profiles, hemagglutination antibody titers, Jerne plaque assays of antibody-forming cells, and lymphocyte stimulation assays. Combined ~vivo effects were ascertained by observing any alteration in the susceptibility of mice when challenged by a Gram negative pathogen. The diverse industrial and agricultural application of pentachlorophenol results in the exposure of a large fraction of the population to this pesticide. It is used …

The Effect Of Nitrogen Fertilization On Grain Protein Content And Yield Of Spring Wheat In South Dakota, Syed Dara Tazul Islam Feb 1982

The Effect Of Nitrogen Fertilization On Grain Protein Content And Yield Of Spring Wheat In South Dakota, Syed Dara Tazul Islam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It has been predicted that the cost of nitrogen fertilizer will soon triple. Consequently, N management by wheat growers in South Dakota will be even more critical than it has been in the past. Nitrogen is one of the most limiting nutrients for wheat production in South Dakota. Many of the spring wheat producers fail to take advantage of nitrogen fertilizer recommendations based on soil testing. Therefore, it is likely that a simple post-harvest method of determining if adequate N was present for wheat crop would be very beneficial to spring wheat producers. One such method is using grain protein …

The Effects Of Excess Arginine On Lysine Utilization In Rats And Swine, David L. Hagemeier Jan 1982

The Effects Of Excess Arginine On Lysine Utilization In Rats And Swine, David L. Hagemeier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of adding supplemental protein to swine diets is to provide the levels of available essential amino acids and nitrogen necessary for maximum protein synthesis in the pig. Lysine has been determined to be the limiting amino acid in many swine diets. Thus, the real objective of protein supplementation is to provide the amount of lysine necessary for maximum protein synthesis, and if this objective is met the requirements for the other essential amino acids and nitrogen will generally be met. Since swine diets are formulated to meet the lysine requirement of the pig, it is necessary to derive …

Repeatability Of Cow Efficiency, Weaning Weight And Milk Production In Angus, Charolais And Reciprocal Cross Cows, Brent A. Buckley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this day of increasing population and decreasing natural resources, man must continually search for more efficient methods of producing foodstuffs. The livestock industry must continue to improve its efficiency of production to remain a profitable producer of protein for the human populace. The pork and poultry industry have increased their efficiency of production through extensive use of cereal grains which could be utilized as human foodstuffs. Beef cattle, on the other hand, have the capability to utilize high roughage feedstuffs, such as grasses or crop residues, which are unavailable for human digestion. The beef cow, in particular, spends the …
