Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The object pf the present bulletin is to report the progress; of work which has been done at this Station for the past five years in corn; also to consider the losses, their causes, and the means in use today to prevent such losses as the years go by. During this period, the Bureau of Plant Industry, United States Department of Agriculture carried on this work in collaboration with this Department. The production of a large amount of good corn during any given season does not depend upon any one factor. It depends upon a great number of considerations, the …

Acidity Of Creamery Butter And Its Relation To Quality, C. Larsen, T.H. Lund, L.F. Miller
Acidity Of Creamery Butter And Its Relation To Quality, C. Larsen, T.H. Lund, L.F. Miller
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The first intention in beginning these investigations on acidity of butter was to trace the relationship between the quality or score, and the acidity of the butter. If there should be a uniform relation between the two, then it would be possible, at least in part to use an acid test in judging or scoring butter. The senses of taste, smell and sight have not always given satisfaction. A person's judgment is elastic, and all judges do not have the same standard, while an acid test is definite. If any uniform relation existed, a certain percentage of the points in …
Sugar Beets In South Dakota, J.H. Shepard
Sugar Beets In South Dakota, J.H. Shepard
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The work recorded in this Bulletin is a continuation of the co-operative work undertaken by this Station and the Bureau of Plant Industry, U. S. Department of Agriculture. The work has been carried on under the same terms and the same supervision reported in Bulletin 106. It will be readily understood, that since the sugar· beet is a biennial, it was necessary to sow additional seed to that reported on in 1908. The sugar beet seed planted in 1907 furnished mother beets for 1908, which ripening that year, furnished us with seed for the 19 9 planting. Consequently this Bulletin …

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
This work in determining Digestion Coefficients with South Dakota grown forage plants and feeding stuffs was commenced in the Fall of 1905. Six grade Merino wethers were secured for this purpose. They were taken up and handled daily until they were perfectly accustomed to their attendant before the feeding trial were started they were kept in a box stall during each trial and were so tied that no one of them could reach the feed box of another. Harnesses were provided by means of which sacks were attached to each sheep to receive the faeces. [sic] The arrangement is shown …

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
During the summer of 1908 experiments were carried on in various parts of South Dakota in order to determine the effectiveness of spraying with iron sulphate and other chemicals for the killing of weeds. Arrangements were made with the American Steel and Wire Company of Chicago, Ill., who manufacture the iron sulphate, to co-operate with this Station in the work. The company consequently furnished the services of an expert, together with spraying machines and ample quantities of the sulphate.

A Study Of South Dakota Butter With Suggestions For Improvements, C. Larsen, J.H. Shepard
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
At the South Dakota State Dairymen and Buttermakers’ convention held at Mitchell in the month of October, 1907, the question of improving the quality of South Dakota butter was discussed from many points of view. It was realized that dairy products from this state, in quality, should second to none. On eastern markets, in competition with dairy products from various portions of the United States, there should be a special demand, at special high prices, for South Dakota dairy products. This state is favored with all the favorable natural conditions for producing the best possible quality of dairy products. If …

Rusts Of Cereals And Other Plants, E.W. Olive
Rusts Of Cereals And Other Plants, E.W. Olive
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
Rusts are among the most common as well as among the most destructive of fungous diseases. They attack the cereals and grasses of our fields, the fruit trees of our orchards, and even the ornamental plants of our garden, causing in years especially favorable for their growth, enormous financial losses. Rusts are with us every year; we may not notice them so much during certain dry seasons, but not a year passes without the disease being present on grain and other plants to a greater or less extent. Professor Balley of the North Dakota Station estimates that the average annual …

Sheep Scab, E.L. Moore
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
In the year 1905 the Bureau of Animal Industry of the United States Department of Agriculture began investigations to determine the relative efficiency of the various constitution of coal-tar dips in the treatment of Sheep Scab, in order to provide some standard whereby the efficiency of these dips could be determined by laboratory methods. The co-operation of the South Dakota Animal Agricultural Experiment Station was enlisted in the practical testing coal-tar dips of various known composition which were prepared by the Biochemic Division of the Bureau of Animal Industry. For this purpose sheep with well-developed cases of scab were procured …
Sugar Beets In South Dakota, J.H. Shepard
Sugar Beets In South Dakota, J.H. Shepard
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The work outlined in this Bulletin was undertaken in cooperation with the U. S. Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Plant Industry, Dr. C. 0. Townsend in charge for the Bureau and the writer acting for this station. The reasons for undertaking the work were two fold. First, there are now good prospects that the sugar beet industry will be established in this state in the near future. The completion of the irrigating project at Belle Fourche will probably be followed by the introduction of this industry there and the erection of a sugar factory. In the second place, work done …

Stock Food For Pigs, J.W. Wilson, H.G. Skinner
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The production of pork is one of the principal industries throughout the entire corn-belt. As the corn-belt is being extended northwestwardly, and as hundreds of farmers from eastern points are coming to this State, annually, to make it their future homes, the production of pork is sure to increase rapidly. There is no place in South Dakota, in which the small grains are grown, where the hog will fail to be a valuable addition to the livestock on the farm, if given a chance. The demand for pork in the market is usually as good as it is for any …

Breeding Hardy Strawberries, N.E. Hansen, C. Haralson
Breeding Hardy Strawberries, N.E. Hansen, C. Haralson
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
A new variety of fruit produced by man's effort is really a new invention. The work of originating new fruits corresponds to that of inventing in the domain of the mechanical industries. Hence a fruit-breeder has some reason for claiming to belong in the ranks of inventors. It may be of interest to state briefly how new strawberries are invented. Strawberries do not come true to seed. Fifty or more plants may be raised from the seed found on the surface of a single berry. When these seedlings come into bearing there will be no two exactly alike. Some of …

Raspberries, Blackberries And Dewberries, N.E. Hansen, C. Haralson
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The need of hardier varieties of raspberries for the prairie Northwest is well known. Briefly stated, in an immense region ranging from Wisconsin westward to the Rocky Mountains, north of the line passing through northern Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska, our present standard varieties of raspberries· must, for the best results, be laid down and covered with earth for winter protection. From the farmer's standpoint, at least, this is expensive and unsatisfactory. The following photographs will give an idea of the work in raspberry-breeding at this Station which was undertaken in order to meet this great need.

The numerous letters received by this department concerning the cultivation and management of evergreens, indicate that considerable interest is being taken by planters in the subject. This bulletin is a summary of the experiments with evergreens at this Station the past nineteen years, together with the experience of planters in other parts of the state. The object of this is to enable beginners to profit by the experience of others who have made an effort to beautify their home surroundings by planting evergreens on the lawn for ornament, or to .secure protection from surface winds weep by plan ting wind …
