Meat : Selection-Care-Cookery, Rena Wills Jan 1957

Meat : Selection-Care-Cookery, Rena Wills

SDSU Extension Circulars

Meats are excellent protein foods. Meat protein contains generous amounts of the essential amino acids. These are the amino acids which your food must provide to enable your body to build its protein. Protein rich vegetables and cereals may lack one or more of these essential amino acids. Meat enhances their protein value when it is served with them. The B vitamins and the minerals--phosphorus, iron and copper--are found along with protein in the meat. Pork is an exceptionally good source of thiamine and iron. Under ordinary circumstances, if your protein needs are met, your body's need for the B …

Listeria Monocytogenes, Alvin G. Fiscus Jan 1957

Listeria Monocytogenes, Alvin G. Fiscus

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Organisms of the genus Listeria have stimulated a great deal of interest as a result of their pathogenicity and affinity for the central nervous system. The clinical condition produced by this organism is known as listeriosis, or in ruminants as “circling disease”. The organism was described by Murray, Webb and Swann in 1926 as the causative agent of an eqizootic infection in laboratory rabbits and guinea pigs. Their observations showed that the disease produced emaciation, abundant exudate in serous cavities, necrotic foci in and on various organs, and a marked increase in monocytes circulating in the blood stream. The name …

Some Observations Pertaining To The Effects Of Relaxin Upon The Bovine, Vincent Allen Hall Jan 1957

Some Observations Pertaining To The Effects Of Relaxin Upon The Bovine, Vincent Allen Hall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The process of birth normally follows a set pattern. The main steps in chronological order are: labor, opening of the cervix, and delivering the young. The cervix serves an important function in reproduction. The cervix is the constricted portion separating the uterus and the vagina, and consists primarily of thick connective tissues especially constructed in folds forming a hollow tube. Through the cervix passes sperm, menstrual debris and in pregnancy the newborn. During pregnancy a mucous plug forms in the cervix and keeps out foreign material and bacteria. In the non-pregnant cow the opening is small. The cervix opening is …

Bloat Results From Various Drenchings Including Effectiveness Of Penicillin For Prevention, Clarence Leonard Moore Jan 1957

Bloat Results From Various Drenchings Including Effectiveness Of Penicillin For Prevention, Clarence Leonard Moore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Body conformation is associated with function among all classes of livestock. Dairy cattle type deals with characteristics indicating ability to produce milk and butterfat economically along with breed character and other values of an aesthetic nature. In order to have economical milk and butterfat production, the dairy cow should possess that type of body conformation which is able to withstand the rigors of disease, reproduction and year after year milk production. A large percentage of dairy cattle sold in South Dakota and surrounding territory, whether for breeding purpose or commercial production, are evaluated primarily on the basis of their type. …

Growth And Physiology Of A Soil Organism Which Is Resistant To The Toxic Effects Of Sodium Selenite, John C. Mickelson Jan 1957

Growth And Physiology Of A Soil Organism Which Is Resistant To The Toxic Effects Of Sodium Selenite, John C. Mickelson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The occurrence of selenium in soils of the United States and its cinnection with a disease of livestock originally called selenium poisoning , is well established. The states of North Dakota and South Dakota have both reported areas of land on which the disease occurs. In 1954, soil samples (from areas in South Dakota in which there is solenium poisoning) we've brought to the South Dakota State College Experiment Stot1on for analysis. From one of those samples, a bacterium was found which was noted as being resistant to the toxicity of selenium and also as being capable of reducing sodium …

The Effect Of Vitamin D. Supplementation On The Growth And Development Of Swine, Darwin Eugene Stolte Jan 1957

The Effect Of Vitamin D. Supplementation On The Growth And Development Of Swine, Darwin Eugene Stolte

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Vitamin D, through its specific action in calcium and phosphorus metabolism and bone growth, is necessary for the production of a sound, well-developed skeleton which his essential to profitable pork production. The fact that common feeds used in swine rations, especially grains and plant protein supplements, are lacking in calcium, vitamin D and in some cases phosphorus, accounts in part for the appearance of rickets and kindred deficiency symptoms under many practical conditions. Rickets and related bone diseases are normally abated by sufficient exposure to direct sunlight. However, in instances where swine are confined indoors or do not receive sufficient …

A Genetic Analysis Of Economic Characteristics Of Range Beef Heifers, Keith O. Zoellner Jan 1957

A Genetic Analysis Of Economic Characteristics Of Range Beef Heifers, Keith O. Zoellner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The beef cattle industry is one og the major sources of rural income in South Dakota. According to the South Dakota Crop and Livestock Reporting Services (1956), there were 1,492,000 beef cows and yearling beef heifers on the farms and ranches in South Dakota as of January 1, 1957. They also reported that sales from cattle and calves amounted to approximately 34.6 percent of the gross farm and ranch income in the state. Since the beef cattle industry is a major source of the farm and ranch income in South Dakota, any improvement in the performance of beef cattle will …

A Study Of Streptobacillus Moniliformis Causative Agent Of Rat Bite Fever, Harry J. Bowers Jan 1957

A Study Of Streptobacillus Moniliformis Causative Agent Of Rat Bite Fever, Harry J. Bowers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A bizarre organism was isolated in 1953 in a Castaneda blood culture flask in an attempt to determine the cause of septicemia in a child. It was discovered that the organism causing this septicemia was morphologically and physiologically similar to one of the organisms causing rat bite fever, which to this time had never been isolated in South Dakota. It was impossible under the circumstances to make any positive identification of the organism. Microscopic slides were saved with the expectation that circumstances would become favorable for research with the suspected organism, Streptocaillus monilformis. It was decided that a study centered …

Farm Business Management Data And Practices In The North James Area, Roland J. Brunsma Jan 1957

Farm Business Management Data And Practices In The North James Area, Roland J. Brunsma

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The farmer today is in an unfavorable position economically. The costs of farming have increased steadily over the past several years, while farm product prices have declined. According to statistics published by the Federal Crop and Livestock Reporting Service, South Dakota farmers in 1956 paid 115 percent of 1947-49 prices for goods and services received, while receiving approximately 75 percent of 1947-49 prices for farm products. Because of this “cost-price squeeze,” the farm operator must continually adjust his management practices to changing conditions if he is to maintain or increase his income and level of living. This requires a careful …

Leptospirosis In Cattle And Swine In South Dakota, John P. Mcadaragh Jan 1957

Leptospirosis In Cattle And Swine In South Dakota, John P. Mcadaragh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Animals infected with Leptospira do not always display the acute signs of the disease but may have a sub-clinical chronic form which may go unnoticed. These infected animals may continue to infect the healthy animals which they contact. The presence of the disease has been demonstrated in almost every state either by the presence of antibodies, identification of the organisms in tissue section, or by culture isolation. The need of information concerning the extent and severity of Leptospira infection of cattle and swine in South Dakota led to this study. Many people are of the opinion that a disease is …

The Posterior Spiracles Of Hypoderma Lineatum De Villers (Diptera: Hypodermatidae) Larvae : Their Morphology And Development, Neal O. Morgan Jan 1957

The Posterior Spiracles Of Hypoderma Lineatum De Villers (Diptera: Hypodermatidae) Larvae : Their Morphology And Development, Neal O. Morgan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is little published material aviliable concerning cattle grub spiracles other than descriptions of the external surface of the stigmal plate. The representative species of Oestroid larvae studied by the early European morphologist was the northern cattle grub, Hypoderma bovis (L.) and their published conclusions of its spiracular exploration were meager. Major components of the spiracle such as a common atrium, stigmal plate and the hollow plates connecting these two structures were described to the extent necessary to establish differences between larval groups.

The Effects Of Low Temperature On Survival Of Rabbit Ova, Mansur Ferdows Jan 1957

The Effects Of Low Temperature On Survival Of Rabbit Ova, Mansur Ferdows

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the field of animal production, genetic characteristics determine to a large extent the quality and the economy of the cattle. To hasten the wide spread dissemination of germ plasm, many commercial farmers have resorted to artificial insemination. Artificial insemination has however, only allowed for the wide spread dissemination of germ plasm from the male. If the female germ plasm could also be more easily disseminated through the highly experimental process of ova transfer, then more than the average number of offspring could be expected from a female in her life time. Because ova transplantation is in its infancy, many …

Aureomycin As Preservative Of Small Animal Bodies, Rudolph G. Griffin Jan 1957

Aureomycin As Preservative Of Small Animal Bodies, Rudolph G. Griffin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the last six years research has been conducted on the use of antibiotics in the preservation of foods for human consumption. The first published statement suggesting the use of antibiotics in the preservation of foods was made by Morris B. Jacobs in 1944. The first commercial use of antibiotics in the processing of perishable food became possible on an interstate basis on November 30, 1955. On that date the Pure Food, Drug and Cosmetic Administration approved Aureomycin chlortetracycline for use “in or on uncooked poultry.” The first antibiotics had narrow-spectra and showed little promise. Later there were developed the …

Comparative Effects Of Two Different Physical Education Programs Upon The Physical Fitness And Motor Educability Of Ninth And Tenth Grade Boys, Charles Russell Reynolds Jan 1957

Comparative Effects Of Two Different Physical Education Programs Upon The Physical Fitness And Motor Educability Of Ninth And Tenth Grade Boys, Charles Russell Reynolds

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The matter of being physically fit is not just that of building muscles. Although strengthening exercises are a very important part of a developmental program, the results attained for the individual go beyond this more apparent phase of the process. Along with increasing strength, other such benefits include increased organic vigor, stamina, poise, and an improved mental outlook. Many investigations during the past twenty-five years have substantiated these assumptions. Thus, one of the physical educator’s prime duties is to increase his pupils’ muscular strength, which is basic to all other growth and development. The importance of physical fitness was brought …

A Comparison Of The Arithmetic Background Of Seventh Grade Pupils Who Have Received Their First Six Years Of Schooling In Rural Schools With Those Who Received Their First Six Years Of Schooling In The Pipestone City Schools, Peter P. Spawn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the past five year, there has been a trend in Pipestone County, Minnesota, to close the one-room country schools and send these rural children to consolidated town schools. Up to about five years ago, there were many rural schools in the county educating these young children up through the sixth grade, then the children would start Junior High School in one of the four towns in the county with high school facilities: namely Ruthton, Jasper, Edgerton and Pipestone. The program went on this way for many years, but now the closing of these rural schools is about eight percent …

Part I. Studies of the effect of dietary carbohydrate and fat.--Part II. Studies of the effect of adding various fractions of linseed oil meal to the diets, including chemical work on the fractions.

The selenium poisoning problem has attracted much attention in Wyoming and South Dakota. In these two states, the damage to farm animals has been of great concern to farmers and ranchers in certain areas. The search for control measures against selenium poisoning has involved the testing of purified chemical compounds and natural food products. Purified chemical compounds found to be somewhat effective against selenium poisoning have been …

You Can Get More Eggs, Boyd Bonzer, Lloyd Shinnick Dec 1956

You Can Get More Eggs, Boyd Bonzer, Lloyd Shinnick

SDSU Extension Circulars

One of the most common causes of lost profits and failure in poultry keeping is the lack of planning and foresight. A good poultryman is alert and wide awake; he is a person who spends a lot of time with small details-one who can watch his birds and sense when they start to get sick or go out of condition. He is a person who plans ahead and is prepared for the different phases of poultry management as the birds grow and mature.
