An Amplitude Modulated Radio Telemetry System For The Measurement Of Physiological Temperatures And A Revised Analysis Of R-C Phase-Shift Transistor Oscillators, Carl Jerl Furchner
An Amplitude Modulated Radio Telemetry System For The Measurement Of Physiological Temperatures And A Revised Analysis Of R-C Phase-Shift Transistor Oscillators, Carl Jerl Furchner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, electronic instrumentation has been employed as a means of measuring physiological phenomena. One use of this instrumentation is the location of small radio transmitters within animals. The most common method of transmitting temperature data is by varying the carrier frequency of a small temperature sensitive oscillator located within the animal and recording the change of this frequency at the receiver; however, this system has some disadvantages. Reduction of these problems was believed to be possible by developing an amplitude modulated transmitting unit in which a temperature controlled audio oscillator would be used to amplitude modulate the carrier …

A Study Of Selected Factors Which May Be Associated With The Imminent Migration Of Individuals From The Lower Brule Indian Reservation, Frank C. Estes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Pages of history are filled with the recording of man’s movement from an area of lesser opportunity to one with a more favorable environment for security and happiness. The Dakota people too were lured toward “greener pastures” like countless ages of people have been. However, the needy migrant (particularly the Indian) in American life may well find himself a virtual outcast, not only from his own parent group for forsaking his “gemeinschaft” affiliations, but because the migrant is not yet a legally-qualified resident of the new community. In spite of the unforeseeable shortcomings which any migrant may encounter, however, migration …

Serological Activity Of Adsorbed Leptospiral Antigen, Lawrence Joseph Larson
Serological Activity Of Adsorbed Leptospiral Antigen, Lawrence Joseph Larson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Leptospirosis is not a single disease but a group of diseases caused by a variety of leptospiral serotypes. Investigations during the past seventy years have shown that leptospirosis occurs in humans and animals in all areas of the world. Serological diagnostic procedures have been the principle means of identifying leptospirosis in humans and domestic animals. The agglutination test is a valuable diagnostic procedure for the identification of infections, such as leptospirosis, when it is not practical to isolate the causative organism from suspected cases. One of the earliest tests for the identification of leptospirosis was the agglutination-lysis test. This test …

Growing Vegetables In South Dakota, Paul Prashar, Dean M. Martin
Growing Vegetables In South Dakota, Paul Prashar, Dean M. Martin
SDSU Extension Circulars
Many South Dakota families have saved as much as $200 to $300 on the family food bill by raising a good garden planned to meet their needs. Gardening provides a useful, profitable form of recreation for the entire family. In addition fresh vegetables are readily available and supply important amounts of certain essential vitamins and minerals. Vegetables picked and used fresh from the garden are superior to those that have lost quality through delay in getting from the grower to the consumer or from being picked before they are ripe. Preservation and storage make it possible to have some home …
The Social System Of The Dakota Indians, Vernon D. Malan
The Social System Of The Dakota Indians, Vernon D. Malan
SDSU Extension Circulars
This study deals with the culture of the Dakota Indian as a basis for devising more effective Extension educational programs that are adapted to their values, attitudes, behavior patterns, and beliefs. Extension experience indicates a need for similar studies in other countries. The same teaching methods and motivational appeals to adapt new practices, accept new ideas and ways of living that have proven so effective in bringing about change in the dominant Anglo-Saxon rural population have been less successful among the Indian people even though significant progress is being made . This poses the question "Why?" Undoubtedly, there are many …

An Evaluation Of Land Policies, State And Federal In South Dakota Since The Homestead Act, And Application Of The Experience To Iran, Nosratollah Cyrus Khatibi
An Evaluation Of Land Policies, State And Federal In South Dakota Since The Homestead Act, And Application Of The Experience To Iran, Nosratollah Cyrus Khatibi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The formulation of land policies of the United States has been a gradual and continuous process. Land policies were built upon the experiences of the past and goals for the future. The physical characteristics of the land and the cultural characteristics of its owners and operators greatly affected the outcome of land programs designed to carry out policy. An evaluation of land policies, present and past, is not undertaken without examining the social, political, and economic conditions prevailing when the policies were formulated. Such an examination for the United States indicated changes in the concepts of property and tenure, and …
The Design And Construction Of A Radio Telemetry Unit For The Study Of Ruminal Pressures, Ernest L. Rahm
The Design And Construction Of A Radio Telemetry Unit For The Study Of Ruminal Pressures, Ernest L. Rahm
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many attempts have been made in the past few years to construct small implantable radio transmitters which can be used to study physiological characteristics of unrestrained animals. The success of these units has increased almost directly with the “state of the art” of transistor circuit design, and considerable heretofore unobtainable data is being collected in this manner. Most of the effort, and success, has been with transmitters for the study of heart rate, core temperature, and alimentary canal pressure. The study of bloat in ruminants is believed to be an application for which the use of such devices would be …
Effects Of Energy Supplementation Of Corn-Oat Rations For Growing-Finishing Swine, Gerald Ernest Poley
Effects Of Energy Supplementation Of Corn-Oat Rations For Growing-Finishing Swine, Gerald Ernest Poley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
According to the South Dakota Crop and Livestock Reporting Service of the United States Department of Agriculture in 1960 South Dakota ranked third in the nation in the production of oats. Twenty-four percent of all grains produced in South Dakota was oats. The efficient utilization of oats is therefore important. One of the limiting factors in the use of oats for growing pigs is their low available energy. Animal fats are relatively high in energy. In recent years animal fats have become a surplus item due to their reduced industrial use. This surplus has resulted in low fat prices in …

Fall Food Habits Of The Merriams' Wild Turkey In Western South Dakota, Curtis Martin Twedt
Fall Food Habits Of The Merriams' Wild Turkey In Western South Dakota, Curtis Martin Twedt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The several varieties of wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) formerly ranged over much of what is now eastern, central and southwestern United States. A large portion of the species habitat was destroyed by logging and by clearing forest land for agricultural use. Wild turkey population, were also directly decimated because of bunting by early settlers. Edminister (1954) estimated present Wild turkey range to be approximately 1 per cent of the historic range. In the past few decades, wild turkey population have increased to the point where the species has begun to assume a prominent place among the game birds. . . …
Estimates Of Genetic Parameters Of Certain Production And Carcass Traits In Beef Cattle, Marion Fitzgerald
Estimates Of Genetic Parameters Of Certain Production And Carcass Traits In Beef Cattle, Marion Fitzgerald
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The knowledge of genetic parameters of any population is essential so selection of livestock can bring about maximum improvement and consequently increase the profits of the producers, the processor, and supply a product that appeals to the consumer. This study is concerned with the determination of: 1) the heritability estimates of production traits, carcass characteristics, live animal measurements, and subjective scores of the live animal; 2) the genetic, environmental and phenotypic correlations of production and carcass traits with measurements and scores; and 3) the value of measurements and scores of the live animal for estimating carcass merit. A knowledge of …
Helminth Parasites Of Wild Mammals From Localities In South Dakota, Iowa, And Minnesota, Donald Arwin Dickmann
Helminth Parasites Of Wild Mammals From Localities In South Dakota, Iowa, And Minnesota, Donald Arwin Dickmann
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It is quite evident that much is yet to be learned concerning the helminth parasites of wild mammals. Not only can new host and new distribution records be obtained from nearly every area where studies are conducted, but new species are also often found. No extensive investigation of helminth parasites of wild mammals in the region has ever been undertaken as far as is known by this author. This survey was conducted to determine the species and relative prevalence of helminth parasites of wild mammals from this region. Most of the wild mammals were procured by members of the Mammalogy …
