Evaluation Of The Effects Of Low Temperature On The Anaerobic Digestion Of Animal Wastes, Anthony Thomas Voell Feb 1966

Evaluation Of The Effects Of Low Temperature On The Anaerobic Digestion Of Animal Wastes, Anthony Thomas Voell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The history of anaerobic sludge digestion has shown an ever increasing body of knowledge concerning the causes and operation of anaerobic organic wastes. Two of the earliest methods used in he anaerobic treatment of organicwastes were cesspools and septic tanks. The theory of the design of these units was based upon retaining the waste material and allowing it to undergo bacterial decomposition. An improvement in the anaerobic treatment process was made with the advent of the Imhoff tank. In this unit the sedimentation and digestion portions were separated so that the sludge digestion unit was not in contact with the …

A Comparison Of Corn Silage And Forage Sorghum Silage In The Production Of Beef, Herbert Lawrence Sorbel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Production of silage per acre varies in different areas of the United States. The type of forage used has a large effect on the tonnage of silage produced. Two of the common crops used for high production of silage in South Dakota are corn and forage sorghum. When stored as silage, sorghum has produced as high as 27 tons of feed yielded on and one-half to two times as many tons of silage per acre of corn. Ruminant animals are well adapted to utilizing large amounts of roughages in their rations. These animals have the capacity to consume three to …

Aflatoxin Formation On Selected Human Foods By Strains Of Aspergillus Flavus, Link, And Penicillium Rubrum, Stroll, Ronald Arlyn Sonstegard Feb 1966

Aflatoxin Formation On Selected Human Foods By Strains Of Aspergillus Flavus, Link, And Penicillium Rubrum, Stroll, Ronald Arlyn Sonstegard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The occasional contamination of foods by biologically active compounds arising from metabolic processes of mold contamination represents a situation which has probably existed since prehistoric times. This is due in part to the ubiquitous distribution of fungi and the frequent opportunity for their growth during the harvest and subsequent storage of foods, and the recognized capabilities of these organisms to produce complex molecules. Within the last decade an increasing body of knowledge has become available concerning the effects of carious deleterious biological metabolites on the health of animals and man. Increased sophistication of methods and approaches to biological problems and …

Tame Grasses For Pasture Or Hay, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University Feb 1966

Tame Grasses For Pasture Or Hay, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University

SDSU Extension Fact Sheets

The low production of native or permanent pasture grasses has long been a problem in South Dakota. Most of these pastures are bluegrass or native short grasses such as blue grama and buffalo grass. These grasses are palatable and highly nutritious, but do not produce as much TDN (total digestible nutrients) per acre as recommended tame grasses. Tame grasses can be used to good advantage on many pastures.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The sale of livestock is an important source of farm income for both South Dakota and Nebraska producers. In 1964 cash income derived from livestock sales by producers included 68.1 percent of South Dakota’s total cash farm income. (1) The average for the four year period 1960 to 1963 was 479 million dollars per year. During the ten year period, 1956 to 1965, beef cow numbers in South Dakota increased from 1,320,000 to 1,724,000. The relative proportion of beef cows in the United States that was on hand in the states of South Dakota and Nebraska for the years 1956 …

An Analysis And Evaluation Of Chemical Education Selected South Dakota Secondary Schools, Bernal A. Kiser Jan 1966

An Analysis And Evaluation Of Chemical Education Selected South Dakota Secondary Schools, Bernal A. Kiser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the past fifty years, numerous achievements have been made in the science of chemistry. Such achievements have required changes, both in industrial chemistry and in the teaching of chemistry. Traditionally, beginning chemistry has been taught as a descriptive science. Even presently, many secondary schools, colleges, and universities, offer a factual course emphasizing the factual data rather than the basic principles. Although teaching chemistry descriptively has appeared adequate in the past, because of the extensive volume of knowledge available today, such a method of instruction seem questionable. More than ever before there seems to be a need for a logical …

Guidelines For The Establishment Of Private Game Management Areas As An Alternate Use Of Cropland To Supplement Farm Income In South Dakota, Galen L. Kelsey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The wealth that flows into South Dakota from nonresident hunter purchases of license, equipment and supplies, room and board, gasoline, and various other hunting services is an important addition to the state’s economy. Is 1953 is was estimated the average nonresident pheasant hunter spent a total of $131 (1,2). A 1959 estimate placed per capita spending of the nonresident hunter at $203.39. (3) In 1963, 204,210 small game licenses were sold; 68,901 or 37.7 per cent were to nonresidents. Total spending by nonresidents for licenses that year was $1,722,525.

Chlorinated Hydrocarbon Residues In Representative Wild Ruminants Of South Dakota, Raymond J. Greenwood Jan 1966

Chlorinated Hydrocarbon Residues In Representative Wild Ruminants Of South Dakota, Raymond J. Greenwood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Insecticides play a major role in the economy of South Dakota which is basically an agricultural state. Large tracts of land in cultivation and pasture offer unlimited propagating areas for injurious plant insects. Natural control measures are not always adequate to ward off frequent outbreaks of these insects. As a result steps have been taken to minimize the chance of these outbreaks developing into epidemic proportions. The application of chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides has been among the control measures employed. (see more in text)

A Histological Study Of The Various Tissue Components Of Raw And Cooked Longissimus Dorsi Muscle In Pork, Dorothy E. Deethardt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Muscle fibers and connective tissue are known to affect tenderness. The partitioning of these two structures was first attempted by Lehman as early as 1897 (Wilson, et, al, 1954). Since that time chemical and histological work has been examined extensively to relate tissue components to tenderness. This study was undertaken to evaluate: (1) the effect of fixatives on (a) the reticular, collagenous, and elastic connective tissue of raw and cooked pork muscle and (b) the fiber diameter in the raw state; (2) the type and amount of connective tissue in pork muscle and the effect of heat on the various …

Helminth Parasites Of Wild Ruminants In South Dakota, Major L. Boddicker Jan 1966

Helminth Parasites Of Wild Ruminants In South Dakota, Major L. Boddicker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Reports of mass and local mortalities caused or influenced by helminth infestations indicate that helminth parasites are natural control agents. Little is known concerning the limiting effects helminths have on ruminant populations. It is known that helminths have on wild ruminant populations. It is known that helminths parasitic in domestic livestock often infest wild ruminants. Swales (1935) and various other workers indicated that serious pathogens in livestock may cause little or no harm in wild ruminants. Thysanosoma actinioides, the fringed tapeworm, which obstructs the bile ducts of sheep, has never been reported as a serious pathogen in wild ruminants. Game …

Hydrologic Aspects Of Water Harvesting, Sidney W. Black Jan 1966

Hydrologic Aspects Of Water Harvesting, Sidney W. Black

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As is most Midwestern states, livestock consumption, human consumption, irrigation, recreation, and wildlife are all in competition for the available water supplies in South Dakota. It is the purpose of this study to develop design criteria for a more efficient system of collection water to assist in satisfying the vast demands of livestock consumption. A moisture shortage can be the downfall of any livestock producer. There are roughly 728 million acres of rangeland in the continental United States with 26.7 million acres in South Dakota (18). Most of this area is available for domestic livestock grazing, but a large portion …

Dieldrin Residues In Eggs And Fat Of Penned Pheasant Hens, Donald Wayne Lamb Jan 1966

Dieldrin Residues In Eggs And Fat Of Penned Pheasant Hens, Donald Wayne Lamb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

At present, there is considerable interest in the effects of insecticides upon our wildlife populations. It is well known that chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides are present in tissues and eggs of birds that receive these chemicals in their diets. Some workers, for example Gene11y and Rudd (1956) and DeWitt (1956), studied the effects of different levels of ingested insecticides on the reproduction of game birds. Additional studies are needed to relate the amount of insecticide in the diet to the level in the egg and that in turn to reproduction and effects on young birds. Work on pheasants is of special …

Population Distribution And Mobility Of Deer In Eastern South Dakota, Rollin De Mers Sparrowe Jan 1966

Population Distribution And Mobility Of Deer In Eastern South Dakota, Rollin De Mers Sparrowe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Population distribution and mobility of deer were studied intensively along a 15-mile stretch of the Big Sioux River, and less intensively on an expanse of 1400 square miles in central eastern South Dakota. Objectives were to determine relative population numbers and distribution of deer, the extent of their daily and seasonal movements, and the principal factors influencing these populations and movements, and to test winter hard counts as a population index. Deer were captured in Clover traps or with a Cap-Chur gun and were marked individually with ear tags, ear streamers, and collars. Some deer were tracked by radio telemetry. …
