Metabolism Of Urea Nitrogen By Rumen Ciliate Protozoa, Alan Lewis Vogel Jan 1971

Metabolism Of Urea Nitrogen By Rumen Ciliate Protozoa, Alan Lewis Vogel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research was to study the utilization of urea by mixed populations of rumen protozoa in vitro in the absence of bacteria. Initial experiments were conducted to determine the validity of chemical determinations used by other researchers in quantitating the nitrogen fractions in the medium following incubation. An experiment was conducted to determine the utilization of urea by rumen bacteria and this served as the basis for evaluating utilization of urea by protozoa. Culture techniques were developed to grow and maintain protozoa under in vitro conditions. Three experiments were conducted in which various nitrogen fractions of fermentation …

Herbicide Residue And Weed Control In Switchgrass, Charles Nicholas Smith Jr. Jan 1971

Herbicide Residue And Weed Control In Switchgrass, Charles Nicholas Smith Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Purposes of this study were to find an effective herbicide for control of grassy weeds in a pasture, to adapt known laboratory procedures for analyzing residues and to determine amounts of residues during the growing season in treated plots. Nine herbicides were screened for controlling grassy weeds, primarily downy brome (Bromus tectorum L.) in a native pasture. Data indicated 2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine (atrazine) applied postemergence at 1 lb/A was the most effective at 85% control. The following year, atrazine, 2-chloro-4, 6-bis (ethylamino)-s-triazine (simazine) and 2, 2-dichloropropionic acid (dalapon) each at 1, 2 and 3 lb/A were applied preemergence to switchgrass pasture. Of …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Crustaceans, aquatic insects and fish were the most important food items found in stomach samples. Black crappies depended on zooplankton and aquatic insects as their major food source as they occurred in all samples and were major food items in 70 percent and 40 percent respectively. Insects, zooplankton and fish were the major food items of white crappies. Insects were the dominant forage present in 54 percent of the samples while zooplankton and fish were dominant in 36 percent and 21 percent of the samples respectively. Perch relied on crayfish, fish and aquatic insects as their major food source. Aquatic …

A Characterization Of Four Prairie Grasses, Carolyn A. Cogswell Jan 1971

A Characterization Of Four Prairie Grasses, Carolyn A. Cogswell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Even though native range forages have been available a long time, there is little research data concerning the specific grasses characterized as native forage or browse. Little research has been done to study these forages because of their natural habitat far from research laboratories, the task of collecting enough forage for adequate sample testing, and sparse yet hardy existence and questionable known vegetative growth with each year's different climate and environmental conditions. Certainly it seems logical that at some future time the knowledge of their nutritive value will become important. Perhaps then with adequate management the rancher can improve upon …

Pasture Supplementation Of Beef Cattle Followed By Drylot Finishing With High-Concentrate Rations And Antibiotic Supplement, Cecil R. Graber

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objectives of the research reported in this thesis were to determine the effects of various levels of pasture grain feeding on pasture weight gains as well as on subsequent gains and feed requirements in drylot. The value of an antibiotic was tested at various levels to determine the effects in rapidly getting cattle on full feed of a high-concentrate ration. The effects of the various levels of the antibiotic were also studied when administered for five consecutive days at monthly intervals throughout the experiment.

Effects Of Delactosed Whey, Skim Milk, And Sugar On Ration Palatability And Performance Of Early Weaned Pigs, Larry A. Hauser Jan 1971

Effects Of Delactosed Whey, Skim Milk, And Sugar On Ration Palatability And Performance Of Early Weaned Pigs, Larry A. Hauser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There has been much interest in the possibility and feasibility of weaning pigs at an early age with attempts to wean pigs as early as one to two hours post-partum. Most workers, however, have concentrated their studies upon weaning at two to four weeks of age. When pigs are weaned at this early age, it is important to utilize feedstuffs that will result in an economical, highly palatable, starter diet that will provide rapid and efficient pig gains. Therefore, the diet must provide all of the essential nutrients in a readily available form and at a cost which is not …

Ovine Body Composition As Influenced By Live Weight, Wallace Jon Koester Jan 1971

Ovine Body Composition As Influenced By Live Weight, Wallace Jon Koester

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Breeders are looking today for larger, growthier animals which will produce a fast gaining market lamb. The market animals must be able to reach a desirable weight with a correct amount of finish. The weight at which these lambs are marketed influences average daily gain and feed efficiency. This market weight often depends upon the availability and cost of feed. When market prices look favorable for the future, the producer tends to put additional weight on his lambs in order to obtain a greater total return. The producer is usually encouraged to market his products at weights which maximize feed …

Effects Of Feeding Leptaden To Dairy Cows, Sitakantha Dash Jan 1971

Effects Of Feeding Leptaden To Dairy Cows, Sitakantha Dash

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Leptaden is a herbal drug which was recently introduced to the market by Alarsin Pharmaceuticals, Bombay, India. It consists of the extracts of two indigenous medical plants, namely Leotadenia reticulata (Jeevanti) and Breynia patens (Kamboji) in equal proportions. In 1947, Patel first drew the attention of gynaecologists to the usefulness of Leptaden in habitual abortions and allied conditions in women and later on pointed out its lactogenic and galactagogue properties. His original observations are supported by growing clinical experience over a twenty year period of medical practice. Published clinical experience shows that in most cases Leptaden stimulates, lactation within twelve …

In 1970 two experiments examined the usefulness of an analog computer for calculation …

The Effects Of Acute Ammonia Toxicity On Certain Homogram Parameters In Sheep, William C. Kirkpatrick Jan 1971

The Effects Of Acute Ammonia Toxicity On Certain Homogram Parameters In Sheep, William C. Kirkpatrick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Due to the rapidly expanding human population, one of the greatest problems facing agricultural scientists is the development of adequate food resources to meet the growing demand for quality protein. The development of more economical and higher quality feed for ruminant animals is essential since they are one of man's primary sources of animal protein. Microorganisms in the ruminant stomach convert relatively cheap non-protein nitrogen compounds into bacterial proteins, which are digested, absorbed, and utilized by the host animal. Urea, a common non-protein nitrogen compound, is hydrolyzed into ammonia and carbon dioxide by bacterial urease. When urea is hydrolyzed faster …

The Use Of Iodine And Chlormadinone Acetate To Suppress Sexual Maturity In Chickens, Curtis Eldon Holmquist Jan 1971

The Use Of Iodine And Chlormadinone Acetate To Suppress Sexual Maturity In Chickens, Curtis Eldon Holmquist

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Researchers, for several years, have tried various methods of retarding the onset of egg production in chickens. Some reports have shown that a delay in sexual maturity is beneficial. When comparing restricted pullets to unrestricted control groups, these reports reveal economic advantages of restriction in that restricted pullets have lower total feed costs, improved egg size, improved total egg production and a lower percentage of mortality during the production cycle. Other research has accomplished restriction with no resulting advantages. These discrepancies may be due, in part, to inaccurate means by which the results of restriction have been measured. Confinement rearing …

Various Forms Of Dehydrated Alfalfa In High-Concentrate Cattle Finishing Diets, Jerry D. Burkhardt Jan 1971

Various Forms Of Dehydrated Alfalfa In High-Concentrate Cattle Finishing Diets, Jerry D. Burkhardt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Even though growing and finishing beef cattle have been fed satisfactorily on all-concentrate diets, in many instances weight gains have been improved and management problems reduced by including some conventional form of roughage in the diet. The most efficient level of roughage will likely be a variable factor depending upon a number of things including weight and condition of the cattle and. nature of the roughages and concentrates. It is a well-established fact that .as the energy content of the diet increases the rate of gain increases and the feed required per unit of gain decreases. In addition to rate …

The Effects Of Erythropoietin, Dibenzyline, And Iron Dextran On The Hemogram Of Doe And Fetal Rabbits, Eugene Austin Gardner Jan 1971

The Effects Of Erythropoietin, Dibenzyline, And Iron Dextran On The Hemogram Of Doe And Fetal Rabbits, Eugene Austin Gardner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The iron deficiency anemia found particularly in swine has a high incidence in the newborn. The nutrition of the sow inversely affects progression of the anemia. Newborn nutritional status, also, inversely augments the anemic condition. The anemia does not become apparent in the newborn until a few days following parturition. There is a drastic decrease in iron availability with succeeding decreases in normal hemoglobin formation and mature red blood cell formation. An important factor along with these conditions is susceptibility to disease leading to death. A gradual return to normal follows if the newborn survives the anemic period. This condition …

Partial Cooling Of The Environment In Free Stalls For Sows During Farrowing And Lactation, Thomas R. Gannon Jan 1971

Partial Cooling Of The Environment In Free Stalls For Sows During Farrowing And Lactation, Thomas R. Gannon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many of the technological advances in the swine industry have resulted in increased capital requirements for buildings and equipment. This has made multiple farrowing, including summer farrowing, a near necessity. Hog farmers recognize the problem of sow mortality due to severe heat stress during periods of high ambient temperatures, and hog producers utilizing the free stall farrowing system recognize yet another problem, that of poor stall occupancy. Sows in this type of system tend to seek relief by leaving their stalls and lying in moist or breezy areas. This decreased stall occupancy has resulted in pigs being severely neglected, reduced …

Effects Of An Appetite Suppressant And Exercise Upon Selected Physiological And Anthropometric Measurements In Overweight College Women, Jo Ann Krause

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Leaders in the field of physical education constantly urge that programs of physical education be based on the needs of all students. Educators have the professional obligation to develop special programs to meet the unique requirements of the individual. One individualized program is for the overweight and the complications both physical and emotional which result from it should be of immediate concern in the planning of the physical education curriculum. However, there is evidence that the best interests of the overweight student have for the most part been overlooked, Programs to combat overweight should be constructed to include physical exercise …

Man And Nature In Herman Melville's "The Encantadas", Jay J. Jackson Jan 1971

Man And Nature In Herman Melville's "The Encantadas", Jay J. Jackson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is in light of the fact that no critic has yet seen fit to explore "The Encantadas" with regard to Melville's theme of the man-nature dialectic that this thesis is written. It is the purpose of this paper to show how Melville views man, nature, and their relationship to each other within the bizarre setting of the Galapagos Islands. In no other work save Moby-Dick does Melville so deeply cut to the roots of the question of man and his role in the natural scheme of the cosmos. In order to examine the man-nature tension of "The Encantadas," I …

A Feasibility Model For Farm Supply Firm Mergers, Donald R. Schwartz Jan 1971

A Feasibility Model For Farm Supply Firm Mergers, Donald R. Schwartz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

South Dakota is currently witnessing a revolutionary change in its elevator-farm supply industry. Technology applied in all phases of the industry -- production, processing, and distribution -- has had an impact upon the structure of the industry. Some of the changes taking place within the industry have been fostered by changes in other sectors of the economy. Employment opportunities and increasing wage rates have provided many marginal firm operators more favorable alternatives outside the elevator-farm supply business. Simultaneously, economic growth has encouraged new investments in larger grain handling and farm supply firms, thus hastening the adoption of technological developments. These …

Parasites Of Shrews In Brookings County, South Dakota, Gary D. Collins Jan 1971

Parasites Of Shrews In Brookings County, South Dakota, Gary D. Collins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The short-tailed shrew, Blarina brevicauda, and the masked shrew, Sorex cinereus, are the two representatives of the shrew family in Brookings County, South Dakota. These mammals, by the very fact that they are insectivores, are potential hosts for a varied fauna of parasites, as insects serve as intermediate hosts for a number of helminths. Although shrews are insectivores, they are omnivorous. An opportunist, the shrew will consume an abundance of any available food. They have been known to feed on a bird's nest (Horvath, 1965) and attack a garter snake (Byle, 1965). Hair from various small mammals was found in …

Prediction Of Beef Palatability Factors And Relationships Between Live And Carcass Traits, Richard J. Berns Jan 1971

Prediction Of Beef Palatability Factors And Relationships Between Live And Carcass Traits, Richard J. Berns

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The agricultural industry or South Dakota is primarily based on the beer cow and her products. Cattle feeders had 275, 000 head of cattle and calves on feed on July 1, 1970, a 2 percent increase over July 1, 1969. South Dakota has about 1, 719, 000 beef cows which is 38 percent more than a decade ago. The state can continue to increase beef production in many ways such as retaining mare cows to produce feeders, increasing calving percentage, using crossbreeding, or feeding cattle to heavier weights. Increased carrying capacity through irrigation and management may be another avenue to …

Quality And Quanity Of Surface Runoff From A Cropland Area In South Dakota During 1970, Terry Allen Mccarl Jan 1971

Quality And Quanity Of Surface Runoff From A Cropland Area In South Dakota During 1970, Terry Allen Mccarl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the past, pollution from agricultural sources has received far less attention than pollution from industrial and municipal sources. Point sources of agricultural pollution such as livestock confinement feeding operations have received more attention by researchers than the runoff from cultivated cropland. The 1967 Conservation Needs Inventory performed by the United States Government reported 1,438 million acres of non-federal rural land, including 437.6 million acres of cultivated cropland. Every year 500,000 acres of cropland are lost from productive use as cropland due to soil erosion. An average of one million acres of urban land and other built-up areas such as …

The Tension Between Mysticism And Erotic Sensibility In Christina Rossetti's "Goblin Market", Linda H. Marquardt Jan 1971

The Tension Between Mysticism And Erotic Sensibility In Christina Rossetti's "Goblin Market", Linda H. Marquardt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

"Goblin Market," Christina Rossetti's best-known narrative poem, appeared in 1862 as the leading poem in Goblin Market and Other Poems, a volume designed to attract the Christmas trade. Since then, the few scholars who have ventured to regard Miss Rossetti as something more than Dante Gabriel's sister have concerned themselves with varied and in-depth critical interpretations of "Goblin Market." William Rossetti, brother and biographer of the poet, reports that he had often heard Christina say that she meant nothing profound by the fairy tale and that "Goblin Market" should not be taken as an apologue. Disregarding Christina Rossetti's own comment, …

The Effects Of Rapid Decompression On Total Plasma Phospholipids And Selected Hematological Parameters In Dogs, Lawrence J. Fortuna

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this project was twofold: (1) measure the change in total plasma phospholipids due to rapid decompression, and (2) measure the effects of rapid decompression on selected hematological parameters. An attempt has been made to show that an increase in phospholipids following rapid decompression does occur. This attempt was made to substantiate the Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) Theory of the etiology of decompression sickness. (See more in text)

An Analysis Of Three Approaches To Grammar With Recommendations For A Multiphasal Grammar, Rose Marsha Kessler Jan 1971

An Analysis Of Three Approaches To Grammar With Recommendations For A Multiphasal Grammar, Rose Marsha Kessler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Today the teacher is confronted with three approaches to the teaching of grammar, all of which contain useful concepts; it is the major contention of this study that the best of each of these approaches may be the desired choice. It is the intention of this paper to propose a multiphasal grammar and to show that such a grammar seems to be the ultimate direction for the teaching of the English language. This multiphasal grammar will combine the best of the three approaches: the most useful and logical elements of traditional nomenclature; the structuralists' emphasis on the sound of language, …
