Wildlife Management: A Landowner's Guide, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
Wildlife Management: A Landowner's Guide, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
Man has a great effect upon wildlife. Many of man's activities have produced vast changes on the landscape and significantly altered wildlife's habitat. For example, before the Missouri River was dammed, large numbers of deer inhabited the forested river bottoms. After these bottoms were flooded the population of deer was greatly reduced. However, several species of fish have flourished because of the reservoirs created. Another example is the prairie chicken. It requires large tracts of prairie land and could not survive in areas where the prairie was plowed and converted to cropland. Since wildlife is a product of the land …

Recognizing Personality Characteristics Related To Managerial Potential In Agriculture, H. A. Gilbert, K. R. Krause, P. L. Williams
Recognizing Personality Characteristics Related To Managerial Potential In Agriculture, H. A. Gilbert, K. R. Krause, P. L. Williams
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
This study was exploratory in nature. The sample was too· small to provide conclusive, refined prediction instruments. Given these limitations, however, the utilized approach indicates that farmers lacking personality characteristics necessary to become successful managers can be identified. However, additional testing and consideration of other independent variables may develop more reliable relationships than were developed in this study.
Feeding Brood Sows, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
Feeding Brood Sows, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
Pregestation, gestation, and lactation are critical periods in swine nutrition. Work at many experiment stations has shown that sows will produce larger litters if their energy intake is limited during gestation than if they are allowed access to a self feeder. In the gestation period weight gains must be controlled, because over-fatness often decreases litter size besides increasing feed costs. In the nursing period, plentiful milk production requires liberal feeding, however, there is evidence that milk production is to some extent related to the number of nursing pigs and it would appear reasonable to feed the lactating sow on a …

SDSU Extension Circulars
This insecticide handbook is designed to be used as a guide for responsible persons making insect control recommendations. We have selected insecticides for controlling various insect problems that occur in South Dakota on the basis of efficacy, cost, and relative safety. In all cases the safe use of these chemicals requires strict adherence to the precautions outlined on the label. In addition to the insecticides listed in this handbook, other insecticides may have Federal and/or State registration for use. The lack of their inclusion in this handbook does not imply condemnation of said product: some of these were omitted because …

Performance Testing Beef Cattle, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
Performance Testing Beef Cattle, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
Performance testing offers beef cattle breeders a way of measuring differences among animals for traits that have economic significance. The economic traits are those that contribute to productive efficiency, carcass desirability, rapid growth rate, efficient use of feed, regularity of reproduction, and carcass quality desired by the packer and consumer. The differences observed or measured in these traits are to a certain extent inherited differences. Thus, the systematic measurement of these differences, the recording of the measurements, and the use of the records in a selection program will increase the rate of genetic improvement in a herd.
