Studies On Reaction Of Mimosine With Various Amines And Effects Of Mimosine On Tyrosine Decarboxylation, Paul D. Ballata Jan 1972

Studies On Reaction Of Mimosine With Various Amines And Effects Of Mimosine On Tyrosine Decarboxylation, Paul D. Ballata

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As early as 1897 the toxic effects of mimosine were observed and animals ingesting mimosine showed symptoms of hair loss, infertility, and retardation of growth. Mimosine occurs naturally in leguminous plants indigenous throughout the tropics of the world. Since the forage of these plants has a protein content as high as alfalfa and is relished by all kinds of livestock, the mechanism of the toxicity of mimosine should be explained. Although the effects of mimosine have been known for a long time, the reason or mechanism for these effects has not been explained. Much work has been done on the …

The Horse As Symbol In D.H. Lawrence's St. Mawr, Dolores Elizabeth Horwood Jan 1972

The Horse As Symbol In D.H. Lawrence's St. Mawr, Dolores Elizabeth Horwood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

What is most important about a novel like St. Mawr? The horse-symbol which dominates both the novel and this thesis? The "doctrine of spontaneity" which Lawrence espoused and wrote about on almost every page of the short novel? Or simply the fact that Lawrence's language is as spontaneous and powerful as the natural world of which he wrote? All of these are St. Mawr, and all are, to some degree, reflected in this thesis. Also reflected in this thesis is my admiration both for the works of Lawrence and for the man himself--and they are really one in the same.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The general thesis underlying this study is that a student's absolute change between expectations and perceptions of a college environment is related to his performance and sex. Two null hypotheses were generated. The hypotheses as related to the methodology and the CCI instrument of the study were: 1. There are no significant differences in the freshman change or C-score on the basis of sex of the student. 2. There are no significant differences in the freshman change or C-score on the basis of grade point average grouping. The population was divided into three groups with male and female subdivided within …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Seventy-six primiparous, crossbred gilts averaging approximately 125 to 135 kg were used in a series of two experiments to determine the effects of chlorpropamide upon reproductive and blood criteria. The drug, fed at the rate of 1000 ppm (1816 mg per day) and 3000 ppm (5448 mg per day), was included in a 14% protein basal diet from the day following breeding until gilts were sacrificed after 60 or 95 days of gestation. The 515 fetuses collected from these gilts were used to obtain information about the effects of chlorpropamide on individual weights and blood glucose and fructose levels. Data …

Major Themes In The Novels Of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., June A. Anderson Jan 1972

Major Themes In The Novels Of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., June A. Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. has written six novels which explore some of the most important problems confronting man in contemporary society. Little significant criticism has been written on Kurt Vonnegut since he began writing in 1949. Recently, however, he has experienced an increasing popularity with readers and critics who have found his novels successful probings into modern man’s feelings of alienation in a world which he perceives as increasingly absurd. This thesis is an analysis of Kurt Vonnegut’s use of black humor, satire and science fiction devices in his exploration of four major themes occurring throughout his novels: criticisms of science, …

Carlyle's Literature Of Heroism And Its Contemporary Model--Mao, Kang-I Eleanor Chang Jan 1972

Carlyle's Literature Of Heroism And Its Contemporary Model--Mao, Kang-I Eleanor Chang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Today when millions of Chinese people are shouting, "Long Live Chairman Mao” and waving their red books with flaming, uncontrollable enthusiasm, one wonders whether the worship is genuine, and whether this is the kind of worship which Carlyle means. However, the main emphasis of this thesis is on Carlyle's concept of heroism. Carlyle was greatly obsessed with the heroic ideal. After he was disappointed with the lack of modern heroes in America, he longed for a heroic nation to admire. Thus Carlyle, after a long pilgrimage became the good friend of Germany and the worshiper of German great men. He …

The Effect Of Range Condition And Season Of Grazing On The Amount And Quality Of The Diet Selected By Grazing Steers, David W. Rodgers Jan 1972

The Effect Of Range Condition And Season Of Grazing On The Amount And Quality Of The Diet Selected By Grazing Steers, David W. Rodgers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Adequate knowledge of the nutrition of grazing animals depends on accurate measurement of both intake and nutritional value of the forage being consumed. Cattle grazing native grasslands select their diet from a variety of plants which are continually changing in palatability, digestibility and chemical composition. The result of these changes may be inadequate nutrition for optimum animal production on a sustained basis. As forages mature, overgrazing occurs or with the onset of drought the incidence of inadequate nutrition of range livestock increases. Many workers agree that sampling from the esophageal fistula is the best method of evaluating the nutritional value …

Use Of Eelctrophoresis To Determine Populations Of Pheasants In South Dakota, David George Montag Jan 1972

Use Of Eelctrophoresis To Determine Populations Of Pheasants In South Dakota, David George Montag

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) is an important game bird, and various management techniques have been implemented in its behalf. One of the most common practices has been transplanting or stocking wherein pheasants are introduced into an area with a depleted population in hopes of increasing pheasant production. The effects of such programs are difficult to evaluate since there is no way of knowing if the introduced birds are in any way responsible for production changes which subsequently occur. If the taxonomic characteristics of the native and the introduced populations could be determined, the effect that introduced birds have on …

Effects Of Diethylstilbestrol On Reproduction In The Black-Tailed Prairie Dog, Donald G. Pfeiffer Jan 1972

Effects Of Diethylstilbestrol On Reproduction In The Black-Tailed Prairie Dog, Donald G. Pfeiffer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research was conducted in southwestern South Dakota in 1970 and 1971 to obtain information on the reproductive cycle of the black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) and to test effectiveness of diethylstilbestrol as a reproductive inhibitor. Embryo body lengths from 10 pregnant females were compared to body lengths of 14 known day-old young to learn the peak breeding period when an estrogenic chemosterilant would be most effective. Conception dates were obtained for three females by backdating the gestation period. The breeding peak was found to occur in late February and early March in South Dakota. Nine of 11 Prairie dogs were …

A Comparison Of Visual Observation And Kamar Heat Detectors As A Means Of Detecting Heat In Heifers, T. D. Rich, C. L. Johnson Jan 1972

A Comparison Of Visual Observation And Kamar Heat Detectors As A Means Of Detecting Heat In Heifers, T. D. Rich, C. L. Johnson

South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1972

The key to any successful artificial insemination program is doing an adequate job of detecting cows in heat. Not only is heat detection difficult for the inexperienced person, it requires considerable time and labor.
There are devices available on the market which are designed to reduce labor requirements associated with heat detection. One of these devices is the heatmotmt detector called KaMar® (KaMar Inc., Steamboat Springs, Colorado).
The purpose of this study was to compare the KaMar patch to a person experienced in detecting yearling heifers in heat.

Increasing The Frequency Of Twinning In Beef Cows, T. D. Rich, C. L. Johnson Jan 1972

Increasing The Frequency Of Twinning In Beef Cows, T. D. Rich, C. L. Johnson

South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1972

The beef cow must be maintained throughout the year to produce only one useful product, a weaner calf. If she fails to wean a calf, the costs of maintaining her must be borne by the productive members of the herd. In the United States, the estimated percent calf crop ranges from 65 to 90% with 85% suggested as average for the more productive areas of the country. This means maintaining 100 cows for every 85 calves weaned. However, the rancher normally must add replacement heifers at the rate of 15% of the cow herd each year. This means marketing 70 …

The second is to analyze the degree to which farm operators attitudes are favorable toward wetlands, drainage, and waterfowl production programs.

Herd Health Calendar For Cow-Calf Producer, James H. Bailey Jan 1972

Herd Health Calendar For Cow-Calf Producer, James H. Bailey

South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1972

The cliche "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" may be worn threadbare, but it has direct application to cow-calf operations today. There is no cure for some cattle diseases once they become established in a herd. Take vibriosis for example. It can string out the calving interval making it virtually impossible to ever get the cows back to a normal, seasonal interval. Vibriosis can be prevented by careful management practices and a vaccination program.

Influence Of Mating And Management Systems On The Performance Of Beef Cows And Calves, A. L. Slyter Jan 1972

Influence Of Mating And Management Systems On The Performance Of Beef Cows And Calves, A. L. Slyter

South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1972

Research was initiated at the Newell Field Station in 1968 to study the influence of certain mating and management systems of crossbred beef cows on subsequent beef production. Factors under investigation include year-round drylotting vs. summer pasturing and backcrossing vs. outcrossing. Preweaning calf treatments, creep feeding and stilbestrol implantation are being studied.

Achieving Reproductive Efficiency, Lowell Slyter Jan 1972

Achieving Reproductive Efficiency, Lowell Slyter

South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1972

What is reproductive efficiency in terms of the beef cow? By traditional definition, it would be one calf per cow each 12 months. However, there is more to it than just a "calf". We want a heavy weaning calf and would like to do it on the least amount of feed possible to accomplish the task. The number of calves produced per female in the breeding herd is no doubt the single most important factor influencing the income of the cow-calf operation. Increasing the calf crop by 10% is equal to approximately a 50 lb. increase in the average weaning …

Mga Influence On Ovum Transport And Fertility In Beef Cows, J. D. Reed, T. D. Rich Jan 1972

Mga Influence On Ovum Transport And Fertility In Beef Cows, J. D. Reed, T. D. Rich

South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1972

Artificial insemination (A.I.) has been commercially available to beef producers for nearly 20 years. However, most beef cattlemen do not take advantage of A.I. because of the labor and management required during the long breeding season. If the breeding season could be condensed into a few days through estrus synchronization, this disadvantage could be overcome.
Most methods of estrus synchronization have involved the feeding of a synthetic progestin for several days. These compounds prevent estrus and ovulation until 2 to 8 days following their withdrawal. However, reduced fertility at the first estrus following withdrawal has been a problem. It is …

Choosing Breeds And Crossbreeding Systems By Computer, C. A. Dinkel, D. D. Dearborn Jan 1972

Choosing Breeds And Crossbreeding Systems By Computer, C. A. Dinkel, D. D. Dearborn

South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1972

A computer program called "Simumate" has been developed that will allow a producer to evaluate crossbreeding systems for his particular nutrition and management situation using the breeds of his choice. This program, based on a method suggested by Dearborn (1970), takes into account energy requirements for maintenance of the cow, for milk production and for gain required during the gestation period (Neville and McCullough, 1969). It also takes into account the reproductive rate, growth rate, selling prices at several stages and the costs of production both feed and fixed in arriving at a net return for all straightbreds, all possible …

This represents 3.2 per cent of the United States production, ranking South Dakota ninth in annual production. Technological advances …

Fresh And Cured Properties Of Low Quality (Pse) Hams As Compared To Normal Hams, Thomas H. Van Meeteren Jan 1972

Fresh And Cured Properties Of Low Quality (Pse) Hams As Compared To Normal Hams, Thomas H. Van Meeteren

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the mid to late 1950's meat scientists and processors became increasingly aware of and interested in ante mortem and post-mortem stress and how it related to meat quality. This interest was generated largely from two problem conditions confronting the meat industry: pale, soft, exudative pork and dark cutting beef. Briskey et al. were the first to study the condition in pork. Further explorations were reported by Briskey, Hedrick et al., Lewis and Sayre et al. Research has characterized physical and chemical conditions associated with pale, soft and watery pork since it was first reported. This research was probably stimulated …

Sephadex G-25 And Charcoal Separation Of Mouse Growth Inhibitors In Soybeans From Trypsin Inhibitors, Larry James Tidemann Jan 1972

Sephadex G-25 And Charcoal Separation Of Mouse Growth Inhibitors In Soybeans From Trypsin Inhibitors, Larry James Tidemann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rising costs have changes man’s ideals and eating habits. Plant ingredients, because of their relatively low costs, have been increasingly used as a substitute for animal proteins. If these plant ingredients could be directly utilized by man, this would be a more efficient use of energy and nutrients. One plant source currently used in such a manner is soybeans, which is a prime source of protein for human and livestock nutrition. However, soybeans contain several factors that are detrimental to man and livestock. Heating of soybeans counteracts these factors, since the undesirable factors are heat labile. However, heat alters the …

Swine Diets Utilizing Wheat, J. W. Mccarty, R. C. Wahlstrom, A. E. Dittman Nov 1971

Swine Diets Utilizing Wheat, J. W. Mccarty, R. C. Wahlstrom, A. E. Dittman

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1971

Previous trials have suggested that, when diets were supplemented at the same level and either corn or wheat was used in the same amount as the grain, pig gains were similar. However, pigs fed corn diets were more efficient in terms of both feed use and cost per pound of grain. Wheat diets supplemented at lower levels or assess the value of wheat's higher protein level relative to corn and fed with or without supplemental lysine did not support satisfactory pig performance in terms of gain, feed efficiency or feed cost. Results of these trials suggested that an intermediate level …

Effect Of Cooked Soybeans And Type Of Housing On Growth Performance And Carcass Chracteristics Of Swine, Richard C. Wahlstrom, G. W. Libal, J. F. Fredrikson, R. M. Luther

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1971

Previous research conducted at the Southeast South Dakota Experiment Farm had shown very little difference in rate of gain of growing pigs housed in to tally confined or in open-front buildings . However, approximately 9% less feed was required when pigs were housed in the confinement buildings . The present experiment was conducted to obtain further information on the effect of cooked soybeans in diets for growing pigs wh en housed in a controlled environment confinement building or an open-front building with waterers and feeders in an outside concrete lot .

An Evaluation Of Muscle Fiber Size And Number As Indicators Of Pork Quality And Meatiness, W. J. Costello, R. J. Smith, K. E. Gilster Nov 1971

An Evaluation Of Muscle Fiber Size And Number As Indicators Of Pork Quality And Meatiness, W. J. Costello, R. J. Smith, K. E. Gilster

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1971

Muscle cell size has been associated with overall muscle or meat yield in past research. Recent European reports indicate relationships between muscle cell size and number and pork quality. A small sample of muscle, removed surgically from a breeding animal, could be evaluated and the results utilized in selection decisions if muscle cell characteristics do indicate meat quality and quantity traits. This study was initiated to determine if the reported relationships could be observed.

The Influence Of Flushing During Estrus On Ovulation And Embryo Survival To 30 Days Gestation, Duane E. Wachholz, Richard C. Wahlstrom, Travis D. Rich Nov 1971

The Influence Of Flushing During Estrus On Ovulation And Embryo Survival To 30 Days Gestation, Duane E. Wachholz, Richard C. Wahlstrom, Travis D. Rich

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1971

English workers have reported that doubling the feed from 4 to 8 lb. for one feeding after breeding tended to increase the number of ovulation sites and the number of pigs born. Workers at Kentucky have also found similar results when gilts were fed ad libitum for a 12-hour period following breeding. Previous work done at this station has failed to confirm these reports. The experiment reported here is a further attempt to substantiate this work under South Dakota conditions.
