High Moisture Grain Storage, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
High Moisture Grain Storage, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
If a shortage of fuel develops for drying corn and sorghum in the fall, one way to work around the problem is to store as high moisture grain that portion of the crop to be used as livestock feed. High moisture storage is an efficient method of handling feed grains used by many livestock feeders as an “every-year” practice. Research and on-the-farm experiences have shown that storing high moisture grain in gas-tight storage units, reasonably tight conventional silos, and “sealed” bunker or trench silos offers farmers a low fuel-requirement alternative of storing grain in addition to several other advantages. Preserving …

New Role For Extension: Serving The Rural Community Water Districts, Cooperative Extension Service
SDSU Extension Special Series
It is in the lifetime of many of us that electricity came to the South Dakota countryside in the form of shining wires and public cooperation. Now again we see the same spirit of cooperation and miles of underground pipe;line going down. Extension - your county agents and the specialists located at SDSU, individual farmers and community leaders, and various other government agencies are cooperating in this venture. The result: dependable water, good health, increased land values and bolstered economy, and quality living in South Dakota.

Chemical Weed Control In Pasture, Range And Hayland, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
Chemical Weed Control In Pasture, Range And Hayland, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
There are 28 million acres of pastures and rangeland, 2 million acres of native hayland, 2¼ million acres of alfalfa and ½ million acres of tame grass hayland in South Dakota. Many herbaceous and woody plants are present in these grassland areas. Some forbs add to the productivity and are desirable plants. Some may be desirable when found in sparse stands, but become undesirable in heavy stand intensities. Undesirable plants may reduce production of palatable forage, others may reduce the quality of animal products and still others may be poisonous to livestock.

Nitrates In South Dakota Drinking Water, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
Laboratories frequently report the nitrate content of water in various expressions of measurement. Since this is often confusing, this publication attempts to define and equate these measurement expressions. The scope and sources of the nitrate problem are discussed and toxicity levels given. Proper sample taking techniques are explained and control actions recommended.

Insect Control On Beef Cattle, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
Insect Control On Beef Cattle, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
In controlling external parasites on beef cattle, a rancher must use extreme care in selecting the proper insecticide. Follow the directions exactly as they are printed on the label. Do not apply a spray mixture that is too concentrated nor apply too much to each animal. Young calves and sick animals are especially susceptible to overdoses of some insecticide preparations. On the other hand, make sure the spray is mixed at recommended concentration; incomplete control may make it necessary to repeat treatment. Use preparations that are registered and formulated especially for livestock use.
Nitrates In Livestock Waters, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
Nitrates In Livestock Waters, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
This Fact Sheet: (1) briefly reviews the sources of nitrates in waters, (2) discusses the way in which nitrates poison animals and the extent of the problem as it relates to livestock waters, (3) sets guidelines for the safe use for livestock of waters containing nitrates, and (4) clarifies some possible misunderstandings of the nature of the problem. The statements made here are based upon a critical and extensive review of the published experimental work and on years of observation of the nitrate problem at the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station.

Water Quality Criteria: An Analysis As Applied To The Big Sioux River, J. E. Wiebe
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The eastern counties of South Dakota constitute the most densely populated area in the state. It is also in this part of the state that some of the more intensive agricultural production and processing activities are conducted.
One of the main sources of water in eastern South Dakota is the Big Sioux River. The Federal Water Quality Act of 1965 required that each state establish standards of water quality for interstate streams, such as the Big Sioux, in an attempt to maintain certain regional levels of water quality. In 1967 such standards and a plan for implementing them were developed …
