Alcohol Fuel From Fodder Beets: Economic Feasibility Of A Small Scale Plant, T. L. Dobbs, M. K. Habash
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The study reported in this publication was undertaken to answer with great confidence the question of how economically feasible fodder beet based alcohol production might be. Specific research objectives addressed in the study were the following:
1. to estimate costs of growing fodder beets under South Dakota conditions.
2. to determine the costs of processing fodder beets in a small-scale plant into 185-190 proof alcohol and a feed byproduct.
3. to determine the likely value of the feed by product (the high-protein feed remaining after the alcohol is removed);
4. to estimate the value of 185-190 proof alcohol; and
5. …

Ozonation Of A Municipal Surface Water Supply To Reduce Trihalomethanes, Odor, Chlorine Demand, And Organics, Pen-Shi Peter Lee
Ozonation Of A Municipal Surface Water Supply To Reduce Trihalomethanes, Odor, Chlorine Demand, And Organics, Pen-Shi Peter Lee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Lake Kampeska Filtration Plant draws its drinking water supply from the Lake Kampeska as a part of the drinking water system for the city of Watertown, South Dakota. In this investigation, an ozonation pilot plant was used to determine the effect of ozonation on trihalomethane formation, odor, chlorine demand, and organics. Spectrophotometric characteristics were analyzed for surrogate parameter studies. Following a preliminary study based on trihalomethane reduction, ozone dosages of 0, 4, 8, and 12 mg/1 were applied to raw water at detention times of 10, 15, and 20 minutes. Analysis of variance showed that: (1) Ozonation of raw …

Selenoamino Acids In Wheat And High-Selenium Yeast, Jinq Lih Lee. Lee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Selenium has been known to cause toxicity problems in animals since 1928. These problems arise when the element occurs in the soil at reasonably high concentration and is taken up by plants. Animals consuming the plants may then develop certain toxicity signs. More recently selenium has been shown to be an essential nutrient because of its involvement in the enzyme glutathione peroxidase (Rotruck et al., 1973). Evidence has been accumulating that the element may even help protect against cancer in humans (Shamberger, 1970). Consequently, there has been great interest in knowing about the content of selenium in various foods and …
Frontier Agriculture, 1880-1910 : An Area Investigation Of Human And Environmental Factors Involved In The Process Of Agricultural Evolution In Davison County, South Dakota, Chak P. Lee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Our curiosity about how an area has developed into what it is today invariably draws our attention to its initial situation. In the United States, the frontier serves as the logical locus upon which questions such as the latter can be laid. Frederick Jackson Turner has popularized the frontier concept by elevating its place in the history of the American national development. What Turner's frontier thesis has for special offer to geography lies in the observation of the frontier as a discrete areal unit, set off, as it was, from the settled area due to the differential pace in the …

Effects Of Prostaglandin F2a [Alpha] Dose On Synchronizing Ovine Estrus Using A Single Injection Regimen, Karl F. Hoppe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The cyclic nature of the reproductive process for females has elicited the focus of reproductive specialists. Alterations in this cycle may lead to a more productive female and consequently a more productive livestock operation. These alterations could entail changing the time of the year conception can occur and the specific times during the week estrus may be displayed. For example, the domestic sheep, Ovis aries, has an estrous cycle length of approximately 17 d, whereas the European beef cow Bos Taurus has an estrous cycle of approximately 21 d. Variations within species lead to ranges for parameters which may place …
A Cross Sectional Study Of Farmland Prices In South Dakota 1976-1984, Mohammad Z. Haque
A Cross Sectional Study Of Farmland Prices In South Dakota 1976-1984, Mohammad Z. Haque
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
U.S. land prices experienced a skyrocketing trend with the increase of commodity prices during World War I, collapsed with prices in 1921, remained steady in the 1920's, collapsed again with the farm prices in early 1930's, recovered slowly as farm prices increased in the late 30's and during World War II. In the lull between World War II and Korean War, farm prices and land values moved upward together. Consistent with the majority of regions in the United States, agricultural land prices in South Dakota also fluctuated during the first half of the twentieth century. South Dakota's average farmland values …
Dietary Alteration Of The Energy Metabolism In The Sow During Late Gestation, Reid A. Christopherson
Dietary Alteration Of The Energy Metabolism In The Sow During Late Gestation, Reid A. Christopherson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mortality among young pigs prior to weaning is extremely high with swine producers frequently realizing a death loss of 25% of the pigs farrowed. The majority of these deaths occur within 3 d postfarrowing and can be attributed to being born weak crushed by the dam starvation and chilling. Generally, these causes are the result of the inability of the baby pig during the first few days of life to adequately meet its metabolic energy requirements for sustaining vital body functions. The neonatal pig until about 3 to 4 d of age has a difficult time adjusting to those environmental …
Effects Of Prairie Dogs On Mound Soils, Daniel C. Carlson
Effects Of Prairie Dogs On Mound Soils, Daniel C. Carlson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Biological pedoturbation is a process of soil formation which has not been studied extensively. Pedoturbation is the physical and/or biological mixing of soil material which tends to homogenize soil color and reduce soil morphology differences in the soil solum. Pedoturbation is often a sub-surface or scarcely noticeable soil surface activity, yet many studies dealing with soil mixing are based on surface observations of displaced soil without considering soil profile changes below the surface in determining the volume of soil disturbed by mixing. Black-tailed prairie dogs are burrowing rodents that alter soil development on gently-sloping, shortgrass areas of the Great Plains. …
Characterization Of The Selenium Compounds In Rat Bile, James Terrence Baumberger
Characterization Of The Selenium Compounds In Rat Bile, James Terrence Baumberger
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Selenium, atomic number 34, resembles sulfur in many of its chemical properties and occurs in inorganic form as H2Se, H2Se203, H2Se03, and H2Se04 which are the analogues of H2S, H2S203, H2S03, and H2S04 respectively. In contrast to sulfur oxides, the most stable oxide of selenium is Se02 rather than Se03. Selenium dioxide is a solid that readily reacts with water to form H2Se03 and is easily reduced to elemental selenium. Besides inorganic forms, numerous organic selenium compounds are known. Organoselenium compounds, in general, are less stable and more reactive than the corresponding sulfur analogues and these properties may account for …

Risk Management And Marketing, Gene Murra
Risk Management And Marketing, Gene Murra
South Dakota Beef Report, 1986
Some risk can be transferred to someone else, some may have to be retained by the producer. Price risk is one type of risk which can be shifted to someone else. The cash market method of pricing keeps the risk in the hands of the producer. Often, that means that risk is not managed, just accepted as part of doing business. The forward pricing techniques--cash forward pricing, futures market and options--offer some opportunity to manage price risk by shifting some of that risk to someone else. Merely shifting price risk to someone else doesn't necessarily mean either more profits or …
Cash Settlement For Feeder Cows, Gene Murra
Cash Settlement For Feeder Cows, Gene Murra
South Dakota Beef Report, 1986
The change in the feeder cattle futures contract from physical delivery t o cash settlement should not affect a producer's net price for his feeder cattle. For those producers who hedge or use the cash forward contract. the main impact is in the basis. Now, a smaller basis (by about $3) should be used compared to what the producer used prior to cash settlement. Under the old delivery procedure. once a producer used the futures market as a hedge (sold a futures contract), there were two alternatives--either buy back the contract or delivery. If the contract was not "bot" back …
Profitability Of Feeding Cull Cows, Richard Shane, Wayne Ellington
Profitability Of Feeding Cull Cows, Richard Shane, Wayne Ellington
South Dakota Beef Report, 1986
The seasonal price pattern exhibited in the South Dakota cull cow market is one of low prices in the fall when most culling is done with increasing prices well into the following year. This pattern supports the assertion that cattle producers may improve profitability of their operations by feeding cull cows for several months rather than selling immediately at culling time. A dynamic programming model was used to determine the optimal strategy for marketing cull cows in South Dakota. The model systematically evaluated the sell now versus the hold and maintain or feed for gain strategies of the producer. Results …
